Taylor Swift on Relationships: 6 Signs It’s Time to Walk Away

by Gena Kaufman

In a recent interview, Taylor Swift is talking about how she's matured in relationships. "One thing I've learned that I'm proud of--drumroll please--is when to walk away. I've had some short relationships because I know when to do that."

Sadly, she didn't share her knowledge for when to walk away, but here are a few signs we think indicate it's time to get out of there:

You don't feel good about yourself around him. A partner who challenges you can be a good thing, but there's a difference between feeling inspired to be a better you, and feeling inadequate, and that can be hard to spot at first. But if the guy is making you feel insecure, get out now.

You don't see a future with him. You don't have to be ready to tie the knot this moment, but if you honestly can't ever picture yourself with him in the long-term, you need to end it (or at least make sure you're both on the same page about the expiration date). Otherwise, you're holding yourself back and probably setting things up to hurt him.

You think about other guys, a lot. An occasional crush or drool session over another guy isn't necessarily a bad sign. But if you're constantly day-dreaming about what your life would be like with other men, you might not be getting what you need from this guy.

You're not excited to see him. Sure, some of the butterflies will fade the longer you're together, but if you don't feel motivated to make an effort to have quality time together--or if you don't feel excited in the early stages--he doesn't do it for you and you need to cut your losses.

You don't trust him. If you're always worried when he's out with the guys, you feel the need to go through him emails or text messages to monitor his behavior, or you get nervous if he isn't in contact enough during the day, you don't trust him. That's a big problem, whether or not he's actually giving you reason to be suspicious.

You guys don't fight fair. Fighting, in and of itself, is natural in relationships. But if you guys are constantly bickering and arguing, or more importantly, every fight you have turns nasty, it's a sign to walk away. In the right relationship, yes, you'll still have problems, but they shouldn't be the norm, and you should be able to get through them like respectful adults who care about each other.

Have you ever stayed in a relationship too long? What made you know it was time to walk away?
