Tender Photos Unearthed from a Turbulent Time

When Mildred and Richard Loving married in Washington, D.C. in 1958, they didn't think they were breaking the law. Both were from the small town of Central Point, Virginia. Mildred was of African-American and Native American decent and Richard was white. They did know it was illegal for them to marry in their state-as well as 15 others--which is why they left to tie the knot. Within a month of returning home, police burst into their bedroom in the middle of the night and arrested them under the state's anti-miscegenation law. They were sentenced to a one-year in prison term that could be suspended if they left Virginia.

Banished to Washington, D.C., Mildred Loving, who did not consider herself a political person, wrote about her plight to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. The American Civil Liberties Union took up the case and brought it all the way to the United States Supreme Court. In 1967, in a landmark Civil Rights ruling, the court struck down America's laws against interracial marriage.

On the 40 th anniversary of the ruling, Loving issued a statement that read, "I am still not a political person, but I am proud that Richard's and my name is on a court case that can help reinforce the love, the commitment, the fairness, and the family that so many people, black or white, young or old, gay or straight, seek in life."

In 1965, Life Magazine sent photographer Grey Villet to photograph the Lovings and their three children. Writing for the New York Times, Villet's widow Barbara recalled that he approached the assignment with the aim of creating a tender family portrait, not an overtly political statement. "He chose as he did in every essay…to seek out the literal heart of the matter: a love story." However, the images were utterly groundbreaking exactly because of the intimate and emotionally transparent way they portrayed a taboo subject.

Filmmaker Nancy Buirski rediscovered Villet's photographs while making a documentary for HBO called The Loving Story. Twenty of the images are on display at the International Center of Photography in New York City from January 20 through May 6, 2012. The Loving Story will debut on February 14.

Jesus was ethnically Ethiopian and his common language was Arhemic, which is the same tongue of the Ethiopians today. Jesus(UHBP) also spoke Hebrew, which generally at that time was reserved for the Religious leaders (Rabbis ect.) and the language of the Torah. Jesus(UHBP) was a Jew yes; and was also refered to as a Rabbi since he was a prophet who preached the word of God. Jesus(UHBP) is also a prophet in the Jewish and Islamic religions. He is only considered the Messiah in Christianity. The other Jewish nation on the planet besides Isreal is Ethiopia. Ethiopia was also the first true Christain nation of the world, long before Christianity became the religion of the later Roman Empire and even later spreading to North America. Some of the oldest and most Orthodox Christain Churches are in Ethiopia and Egypt. The Ethiopian Church also claims to hold the Arch of the Covanant. The original scripts of the Bible were written in the language of Jesus(UHBP), Arhemic, along with the Dead Sea Scrolls and other Christain writtings excluded from the modern Bible. Jesus's(UHBP) claim and heritage to the Throne of Isreal was through the line of the Ethiopian Queen of Sheeba which continues on down to the HRH Emporer Selassie I and his family.
The Jewish, Christain and Islamic books are a continuation from the other in that order. The Prophet Mohamed (PBUH) wrote the Q'uaran which included the books of Abraham, Moses, Issac, much of the Torah or the Olde Testament and much of the book of Jesus(UHBP) or the New Testament.
Jesus(UHBP) exsisted at the time of the Roman Empire; an international empire inclusive of many ethnicities moving about as citizens of that empire for trade and commerce; and therefore came into contact with various people from around the known world of it's time. The fact that Jesus(UHBP) was most likly black or ethnically different from others who may have been Jewish then aswell, didn't matter to anyone then and it shoudn't matter to anyone now. It was his teachings as a rightous prophet that encompassed millions not his colour. All cultures that have embraced Christianity have envisioned and made images of Jesus(UHBP) in portrayle as they may generally look as with their own ethnicity. East Asians have portrayed him as looking Korean, Japanese and Chinese. West Indian cultural portrayles of him are as a black man sometimes a Rastafarian style image harkening back to the Ethiopian decent from the Throne of David onward up to HRH Salassie I (who's birth name was Ras Tafari). European and North American Culture portray Jesus(UHBP) as a blond blue eyed white man we may all commonly see in modern Bibles or Churches. All Christains of all different ethnicities presumably do this in order to be closer to their prophet and claimed Son of God, understandably so.

What a wonderful couple and their name so fits their story. would love to see the entire collection of pictures. I was raised in Texas and born in the 60's so i was raised around so much racism but my eyes and heart have never seen color where people are concerned and never felt hatred and its something I am very proud of considering what I came from.

Thank you, Mrs. Loving, for extending your love and compassion, and your spirit of freedom to homosexuals. They, too, deserve the right to love and marry.

The Lovings are very brave and nice couple in spite of all adversities they stuck together and that is love. My ancestors were also slaves and were treated very badly. You cannot bring back the past forgive and do the best you can do not carry a chip on your shoulders because someone treated you badly. God created human beings we created colours and castes. Live and let live

Ts confirms what the Bible says, that the greatest of all is love. Let us make a positive effort to love one another inspite of colour , race or creed

Why is it then that the greatest racists and the biggest foes of such things tend to be the so called fundamentalist Christians?

Thank you for sharing these photos. All I see is the love between the two of them and their family. It's a shame that racism still exists today. Love knows no color or creed.

Why does everyone mention God? Not everybody believes in this superstition.

I'm black, my husband of 30 years is white. We have two children. Only black men have hassled us. Once a black boy told my daughter that I should divorce my husband and marry a black man. Racism can come from either sides...and both are wrong. It's also taught. We all need to get rid of the chip we carry on our shoulders so we can all get down the bumpy road called life.
