YOUR FRIENDS' ACTIVITY

Who has more sex -- overweight or skinnier women? (You might be surprised.)

I imagine fraternity guys everywhere are in a state of shock right now. Or at least are pretending to be.

A study of the sexual behavior of 7,000 American women conducted by professors out of the University of Hawaii and Oregon State University shows that participants considered to be "overweight" report more sexual activity than those who are "normal weight."

The report was recently published in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Researchers collected data on sexual orientation, number of partners, frequency of intercourse and the age when the first intercourse occurred to assess the relationship between sexual behavior and body mass index.

To be fair, some numbers are close. Of the bigger women, 92% say they've had heterosexual intercourse, while 87% of women considered to be in "normal BMI range" report they've had sex with a man. To be even more fair, however, the results on the whole counter stereotypes that overweight and obese women aren't sexually active at all.

This study delights me for a few reasons:

First, it laughs back at all those morons who are rude, discriminatory and chastising to women who don't fit some impossible Hollywood body ideal.

Second, it shows that sexuality and attraction go deeper than love handles.

Third, it's a little piece of ammunition to fire back at our girlfriends and our own self-deprecating thoughts about not being sexy/smokin'/delicious/good enough at this weight/in this body/with these curves.

I am all for being healthy in body, mind, spirit and in the sack. I just don't think that there is a certain weight or BMI attached to that. I'm all for stereotype debunking and for research that helps clarify what our lives are really like.

I also want this study of weight and sexual behavior to delve even deeper -- what does a study of women who sleep with women reveal? What about BMI, sexual behavior and men? How does confidence play in to all this? What exactly defines "overweight" anyway?

Curvy girls, does this study make you adjust your skirt, finger comb your tossled hair and cheer? And those of you on the lower side of the BMI chart, has it put you on a mission to prove that skinny ladies can keep up too?

No matter what size you are or sexual behaviors you exhibit, did you buy into the stereotype that overweight women don't get as much (or any) good loving?
