5 Surprising Ways to Rev Up Your Workout

While summer's warm temperatures, sunshine, and lighter schedules should mean prime time for outdoor workouts, these sultry days propel many of us toward the hammock with a glass of lemonade instead of toward the pavement or the gym.

Certainly, on these hot days, working up even more of a sweat isn't an attractive proposition. But exercise is necessary no matter how languid you might feel.

Try these five out-of-the box ideas to help motivate your workouts this summer.

    1. Take a self-portrait in a bikini

My mother, for reasons passing understanding, has displayed in her kitchen a photo of all of us in the water at the beach last year. Yes, folks, I let my guard down and allowed myself to be photographed in my swimsuit, and now she won't take it down no matter how I beg. In the ensuing year, when I've felt my desire to work out flag a little, I think of that photo and off to the gym I go. And even if you have a bikini body after having your kids, you'll be even happier with how you look if you tone up a little before that beach trip.

    2. Try a coveted class

If you have to be on a bike 15 minutes before spin class even starts, or if the very best yoga instructor's mats are full mere minutes after registration opens, summer can offer you an opportunity to get into those coveted slots as people go on vacation or just slack off a little. The best part? If you show up faithfully, those prime teachers are often pretty willing to let you into their more crowded fall or winter sessions.

    3. Buy sexy new workout clothes

With the change of seasons come the latest styles and colors in great-looking workout wear -- and if you exercise indoors in the winter you'll get plenty of use out of those high-tech cooling fabrics all year long. Check out fellow Stirrer Jennie's review of Old Navy's workout line for inspiration. I am wearing my Old Navy exercise capris as I type (yes, because I worked out) and can second her high opinion of their stuff. Handily, for those of us who are fit but not thin, their workout gear goes up to XXXL. Of course, there's a range of cute stuff from Target and Old Navy all the way up to lululemon, depending on your budget and sense of style. Showing off that cute outfit is a great reason to get off the couch.

    4. Boost your energy

For those of us in four-season climates, summertime is when the bikes, balls, and bats come out of their winter hiding places, and art fairs, festivals, and neighborhood pool parties beckon. Regular workouts give you the stamina and confidence to enjoy these things.

Three summers ago when I was hardly exercising at all, I hated even taking my kids to the park because I was just so out of shape and uncomfortable. Now, I'm nary a pound lighter but am in such better shape that I'll happily stroll the zoo for hours on end and hike all over the park.

    5. Abandon your children

At the gym's child care center. If yours happens to offer it, of course; otherwise, I take that tip back. Entertaining your darling children for 13 straight weeks can be daunting, but I find the gym's babysitters a lifesaver. Our local YMCA offers free, quality child care as a benefit of membership, and other gyms charge a nominal fee. Confession time: I was struggling last year to find fun things for my almost-kindergartner and not-quite-toddler to do last summer when the light bulb went on in my head: The nice people at the Y will look after my kids for free while I work out and take a shower. It's been a win-win; the kids get playtime with other kids and some exercise, I get a good workout and some me time. And I've built some nice muscle to boot.

I will never understand why people think a "sexy new outfit" is motivation. When I go to the gym, I'm there to work out, not hook up. It's like those girls that go to the gym wearing eyshadow to their eyebrows, they obviously aren't there for a serious workout.

I really don't care whether or not a person wears makeup to work out. I won't, but my sister in law will. No harm done in either case. The point is to exercise, not judge other people on what they are wearing or if they have makeup on.

Thank you Elizabeth! I was thinking the same thing. When I run in the morning I don't wear makeup, but when I get to the gym after work it's because I race there to make the classes that start at 5:20 so I still have on makeup. And yeah, I'm always excited to wear something new when I go for a run or to a class. Not because it's sexy, but because I'm a nerd and I like to try all the fun gear that I can. I go to an all female gym, so I think it's pretty safe to say that most of are there for a workout, not a hook up.

I agree that you should look your best. it is not good to assume that when someone looks cute and sexy at the gym that they are trying to pick up someone.

I was going to leave a comment to Becca too, but I guess it's been done already! If I go to the gym at 5am, no I'm not wearning makeup, but if I go during the day or after work...yes I have makeup on. I have had a gym membership for 15+ years....and becasue I wear makeup sometimes when I go, I am not serious about working out? Hm. Sounds like there may be a jealousy or insecurity issue there if you ask me.

I think if you are motivated enough to get up and get out to work out, be it at the gym, or just taking an after work run (that's what I do, with make up on) it shouldn't matter what you wear, if you have on make up or not, or if you are wearing your rattiest clothes (me) or a new sexy outfit...the point is that you are motivated enough, whatever the reason, to actually excersize...there are plenty of folks out there that just don't. And it shows...so wear your make up, or don't. Wear your new outfit, or your rattiest, as long as you are doing something to stay healthy. Sheeesh people, who cares!

I guess I'm from the old school. No matter where you are, or what you are doing . You always look your best. Even if you are home. Not to get attention. Not to impress someone else. Just for you. All 5 children in my family (boys also) were raised this way. No matter where she was, our Mom always looked great. If she was working in the vegetable garden, picking blackberries, whatever. She always had on at least a touch of eye makeup.Dad was always proud of Mom.Dad was the same way. All 9 grandchildren have been raised this way. It's called taking pride in your self. It's like Joan Crawford said You never know who you might see. I have a husband, of 31yrs. He is very proud of the way I look, & take care of my self. My children are also. They were raised to be the same way. I don't cake on makeup. I do wear @ least some eye makeup. If I'm just @ home. It makes me feel better. It has been proven that if you get up every day & get dressed, maybe put on a touch of makeup, it will boost your spirits. Every one needs to chill. Try this you will see a difference in your attiude. Now, I will not put on any type of makeup if I'm going swimming. Now after swimming I will. Besides, @ my age, I don't want people to see me w/out makeup. I might scare them to death. HA HA. One golden rule. Always wear a good moisturizer.

Becca, did you ever think that the women weraing makeup are coming from work or going to work. I go to the gym right after work, i do not take my makeup off because I usually have school or church later on that evening. Stop judging, just because I have eyeshadow on doesnt mean I take my workout any less serious than you do.

Becca, youre right. You can definitely tell who is there to work out & be healthy, & those who are there to look good & try to find a date. When im at the gym, i dont give a rats a** at who looks at me or what i am wearing. Why should i have to look cute at the gym? Atleast im at the gym, right? Trying to keep my figure. Why should a guy only see me as dressed up? Love me at my worst, & youll deserve me at my best.

I completely disagree with those ladies who go to the gym looking like old rags. I am sorry but you should always look good no matter what, it's all about self respect, has nothing to do with finding a date. I have always said that Northamerican women don't know how to dress or present themselves. Please ladies, single, married, 25 or 82, you should always look good for yourself at they gym or else where. We are so lucky, we are women, so celebrate that with being femenine at all times!

i work out while looking at myself on the mirror. I like watching myself doing something good to my body.
plus, I picture out how I'd wish to look like in the long run in working out. i create a mental image of "before and after" results. it gives me a boost to continue pushing my body to sweat. I work out in my room, alone, on the stationary bike and some toning with free dumbbells. I like having some privacy.

don't forget to smile! :D encourage yourself!

becca, sometimes a new wardrobe can dramatically boost one's self esteem. Sexy new workout clothes can give someone more confidence, and therefore make the person feel better about working out. Plus, it's not like workout clothes OR make-up interfere with one's workout.

Okay ladies...I guess we better go wash our faces and rat up our hair so we don't look too good at the gym after work, oh and don't forget to not wash your workout clothes...wouldn't want to smell too clean! Doesn't matter that I am going to shower after my workout...god forbid someone judge me for wearing the make-up I have worn all day at work. You two ladies are completely ridiculous you can't judge someone for working out in make-up, and yes I know the kind of people you are referring to, they go to the gym looking freshly made-up and just kind of chat around the gym, especially near the men. Still doesn't give you the right to judge other people because they may have make-up on and don't look like they just crawled out of a cardboard box. At least we are out trying to stay fit.
