5 hairstyles to help you look younger

A bad hairstyle can age you, but a little know-how applied to those locks can be like a fountain of youth. The Real-Life Makeover team offers up youthful, goof-proof hairstyles and tips to restore body and shine. Your hair probably didn't even look this good in high school.

    #1 The Sophisticated Ponytail
Chances are you've been pulling your hair through an elastic since your pep rally days, but this is a style that can grow-up with you. Use a large-barrel curling iron to give your tail some volume, or keep your ponytail straight and low for a sleeker look. Wrap a piece of hair around the hair tie for extra polish points worthy of a big meeting.

    #2 A Loose Bun
This is a look that's still as ballerina-chic as the day it was invented, the hair equivalent of throwing on an LBD. Pull your hair into a low ponytail, twist, and then loop around in a circle. Secure with bobby pins or clips. Voila! Audrey Hepburn would be proud.

    #3 Volumizing
As if the roster of features the march of time affects weren't long enough, our hair thins and loses body as we age. But don't go crying over flat hair. A volumizing spray applied at the roots will restore that just-got-out-of-bed Brigitte Bardot-oomph you're after. Just add lipstick and you're an instant sexpot.

    #4 Shine Treatment
After your hair has been towel-dried and is still slightly damp, work a shine serum into your tresses. Blow your hair out as usual, blasting with cold air at the end to seal the hair cuticle and lock in shine. Finish with a lightweight shine spray and you're good to go.

    #5 Side Part Switch-Up
Even the most tried-and-true routines can benefit from a shake-up now and then. And what's even better is when the change requires zero effort. Switching your part from one side of your head to the other or making your middle part just a little bit off-center offers a completely different look with no heavy lifting.

Thanks for watching this episode of Real-Life Makeover! See you next time!

Sorry, but they forgot to add that hair cut and color has a lot to do with looking good . Ponytail? Come on, most momen over 50 don't look good in it, and ballerina bun? Walmart is a few years behind the times. We have been watching "real" TV makeovers , so , although some of these tips are ok, the rest is just BS.

Joetta Stone: Why does a mature woman need short hair? It depends on the cut and style and the lady herself. You, my dear, are guilty of ageism!

Some people can rock short hair, but personally I think it makes some people look more severe, and because of that older...and not in a good way. I think older women can rock longer hair just as well as someone younger. It all depends on if they're happy with it and take care of it since damaged hair is not pretty no matter what the age. The model's hair is fine, but those round brushes are horrible for hair!

This is a classic example of product over load and sloppy old fashioned hairdos that add years. First run to the drugstore and get lady clairol nice and easy. It makes mature hair shine and erases the gray. Then invest in a good haircut that flatters you. Buns (on your head) add years unless you are under 30. Invest in a good thickening shampoo and conditioner. And smile (instant facelift!)

all that was good if u have thin ratty white chik hair like the old lighter haired chik n the video! i don't need no grease, ima mutt, we're born with it! i don't need to bird's nest volumize my hair, again ima mutt, born with volume. i spend all day trying to get my hair flat n smooth as a thin haired white chik!!! i cant believe holly robinson peete did that clip!! i would not have even watched it if they had labeled it accurately as, "hair tips for old white chix w female baldness!" wut a waste of 8 minutes of my life!

I am so sick of reading all of these stupid comments about how buns are only for grannies. Trust me, I am not a granny. I bun my hair and it looks polished, stylish and sophisticated. Not in the least "granny". Long hair is beautiful on older women. I have seen luxuriant, silver manes that would blow your silly socks off. Pull your heads out of your asses and have an original thought, people. Sheep get sheared. Real women grow their hair any way they choose.

I am 45 with long, layered, naturally curly, really coarse hair. I have it professionally colored since I have been graying for 20 years. I do wear a ponytail when I teach group fitness classes, when I do my personal workout and some day, just for work--I am the director of a fitness center within a large orthopaedic practice. When I wash my hair, I do use professional shampoo and conditioner and I do use a Paul Mitchell product called FastForm and then decide to allow it to curl or blow out straight and follow with a straightening iron. Short haircuts are probably great for people with more manageable hair but long layers work for me: it keeps the hair from getting really BIG and lets me get it off my neck and face when I know I am going to sweat a lot.

more thoughts from the 68 yr old....I use a cheap shampoo..(once a week)..towel dry my hair...work in some same brand gel then brush it all where I want it before it dries...wait til it's kinda hard and when show time starts...brush it fluffy and it'll behave itself all night.(hair driers and over worked hair costs more damage than it's worth)....Sorry gals, nature knows what she's doing...and is usually free.
