From night owl to early bird in 8 painless steps

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with being a night owl -- you're looking at one, after all -- but the trouble arises when you have to abide by the schedule of the rest of the world. You know, the one that gets up early for their morning commute and snatches that proverbial worm. Here are eight painless ways to join the early bird ranks.

    • Make a nighttime routine. Half the battle of getting up earlier is falling to sleep at a reasonable hour. Start a nighttime routine that gets your body ready to relax, and put your routine in motion at least 8 hours before your alarm is going to go off in the morning. Maybe this includes taking a warm bath, having a cup of chamomile tea, deep breathing, or getting under the sheets and reading or writing in your journal. Create a ritual that will really get you to slow down and welcome an early bed time with open arms.
    • Turn off the TV and the computer. Television and the internet are too stimulating for pre-bedtime behavior. Don't watch TV in bed and stop surfing the internet long before your nighttime routine.
    • Lay off the caffeine. Nineteen cups of coffee during the day may be what's making you a night owl. Switch to decaf at 4pm at the latest, preferably earlier.
    • Have a light supper. Those cheesy chicken enchiladas don't just make you feel sluggish right after dinner. A heavy meal right before bed can disturb your sleep and make it harder for you to wake up in the morning. Stick to lighter nighttime meals for awhile, like soups, vegetarian stews, and hearty dinner salads.
    • Open the curtains. "Here comes the sun, little darling," and what a way it is to wake up. Excuse the corniness, but there's something life-affirming about greeting the day with the sun streaming into your bedroom. And then there's the practical reason -- it's hard to sleep with the sun in your eyes.
    • Know your motivation. If you want to wake up earlier just because you feel like a loser when you sleep in, that's not exactly what psychologists would call a positive motivator. You need a reason to do something to be successful, not just a reason not to do something else. Do you want to get to work before your boss so she can see you looking productive as soon as she walks in? Do you want to have time to write in the morning before the kids get up? Think about what's motivating you to become an early bird in the first place and write down all the reasons. Keep them next to your alarm clock as a motivating reminder when you want to hit snooze.
    • Make morning appointments. Schedule early morning meetings, workout sessions at the gym with a friend, and teeth cleanings. Make your obligation to wake up earlier not just to yourself but to someone else. You'll hold yourself more accountable if you know your bestie is waiting for you on the elliptical machine.
    • Give yourself an incentive. If you're the type who responds to rewards for a job well done, this tip is especially important. It can be as simple as a cup of coffee at your favorite cafe or 15 minutes of blog reading before you hop in the shower, but once you've done the hard work of getting out of that big, cozy bed, give yourself a little reward.

As for the article, I am changing from being a night owl to an early bird, and have never felt better! It is amazing how 8 hours sleep can feel so much different dependent on the times those hours begin and end. I just wanted to return to the previous topic I mentioned quickly and state my observation that the people who CHOOSE to overwork themselves usually could easily work less if they were willing to make sacrifices in other areas (ex. live closer to campus, and get rid of the costly car, use an affordable prepaid cellphone [from the companies you can only buy through online...I have a nice touchscreen phone with music, tv, internet, games, movies, etc and it cost $100 for the phone AND 1 year service AND $100 in minutes...company is called PlatinumTel]). Also, cut out the cable and watch tv online, use the school internet or split the internet with people in the same vicinity. Only buy food on sale, cook your own food, browse sales online.

While I DO have to take out around $5,000 in loans per year, I live a safe/comfortable life, and I have everything the rich kids have and more. I am also studying abroad -- twice. I get Marc by Marc Jacobs and Betsey Johnson shoes for the same price as a pair at Payless through shopping well.

For people who are against taking out loans, try some of the above tips, and you won't have to work so darned much.

It seems a lot of people posting here go to school and work full-time...I'm a student, but I only work when I feel like it. I chose to attend a state school (cheapest tuition for a legitimate, reputable university where I live), and take out loans -- the amount of loans I need to take out is a lot less than many people attending other schools. I will never understand people who choose to be miserable for years at a time just to save a few thousand dollars...I actually tried working (near) full-time and going to school full-time in order to understand this, and I came out miserable, sick, depressed with fallen grades, and only a few hundred dollars extra in my pocket. The trade-off is NOT worth it.

This schedules are probably for stay-at-home-moms/dads, financially secure individuals who are not in school, working two jobs, paying student loans & definitely not for single moms who dont have child support coming every month, or people who have reached a point in their lives where they can AFFORD 8hrs, no caffeine, because they are relaxed. I somewhat agree with Lala, but dont be harsh, you have to read something to find out if its gonna work for u! chill out! With this economy, anyone getting 8hrs of sleep has it MADE! LOL. Whoever wrote this can afford 8hrs of total relaxation! Its the way of the world! Not everyone is walking in comfy shoes now.

I used to be an early bird, but I've been staying up later than usual. I hate it. The key thing to be able to fall asleep earlier is stop snacking before bed. I still have energy because I'm nomming.

Most of these suggestions seem practical. However, I don't live in a place where the sun is up when I need to wake up early! It's dark! Not helpful. Also, I wake up earlier than my husband, so I can't turn on the lights lest I be attacked by Grumpasaurus. Also, the only reward that would be worth getting out of bed for would be snuggling up in my comforter in front of a fireplace and falling asleep again. Especially in winter.

We actually do need 8 hours of sleep a night. Those who claim they can function of 3 - 4 hours sleep a night are actually not functioning properly. The thing is you're so used to getting that little amount of sleep a night that your body has adapted to it. Your body cannot and will not function to it's full potential on less than 8 hours a night. I think it's terrible that we're one of the most sleep deprived countries in the world. It's especially bad for children to not get enough sleep. They need it the most.

I've found that drinking about 8 beers, eating three bananas, reading in bed until 2-3 a.m. puts me soundly asleep and I awake just fine at about noon. Retirement is great!

How much longer before going to bed must one get off the computer or TV? That wasn't exactly clear, but I'm guessing it would be sometime after dinner and before getting ready for bed. (whatever time that may be...)

I just have to laugh -

First, because so many people are referring to the first poster as "Swed". He/she didn't give his name as Swed - he/she entered just the letter "S". The "Wed" is the Wednesday in the date of the post. Yeah, way too funny!

Second, to tita - ROFLMAO get off WoW NAO!! WTB sleep PST!!

is it just me? or does the moon beam clock not work....
that bell alarm is so annoying, and no matter how many mornings i tried it, i keep making up an excuse to say that it doesn't work.
if only there wasn't anything preventing me from opening the curtains for the sunlight to come through....
wait- i still have to be out of the house by 7am anyway. there won't be any sunlight. T_T

I can see this working for a few. Like those who do not have kids, and can spend a few minutes extra on this. I am a teacher and I know that when you try something new you have to give it time. So, if you are like me single, no kids/husband, and time on your hands. Try it, see if it works for you if not try something else.

I have had problems sleeping my whole life and I am soooo busy I have no time to do any of these things. I was recently in NYC and came across a product called DREAM WATER in a Duane Reade pharmacy. OMG, this stuff is amazing. Its water or something that you drink and it makes you go to sleep. Its all-natural too. It worked so good I bought a case. I mean I just passed out 30 mins after I drank it and woke up great with no groggy feeling. They sell on the website too (www.drinkdreamwater.com), I think they have a free shot promotion right now, so you can try it before you buy a case. This stuff really is the best, I should be the spokesperson...Dream Water if your listening, call me :)
