The 5 foods you should eat every day

Eating right on a budget can be a challenge, but it's certainly not impossible. Consider this your cheat sheet to the 5 inexpensive foods you should eat everyday for optimum health.

    #1 Leafy greens
Medical experts call them one of nature's miracle foods. Leafy greens like Swiss chard and kale are high in nutrients like folate and vitamins A and C that can lower your risk of cancer. Just one cup of dark, leafy greens a day could also prevent diabetes and high blood pressure.

    #2 Nuts
Many nutritionists recommend nuts like almonds, cashews and walnuts because they're high in natural fiber. Fiber slows your digestive process, keeping hunger and unhealthy mid-afternoon snacks at bay. Goodbye vending machine runs!

    #3 Onions
Studies show that consuming onions on a regular basis may reduce symptoms of asthma and the risk of developing stomach cancer. Add them to soups and stir-fry, and just remember -- the stronger the onion, the greater the health benefit.

    #4 Whole grains
Refined grains, like white rice and pasta, have lost 90% of their nutritional value through the refining process. As if that weren't reason enough to choose whole grains like brown rice, quinoa and whole oats, a recent study showed that a diet rich in whole grains actually flattens your belly by reducing fat storage in your lower abdominal region.

    #5 Yogurt
Making yogurt part of your daily eating routine can improve your digestion -- if you're buying the right stuff. Check that the label lists "active cultures" to make sure you're getting healthy probiotics, and pick a yogurt rich in vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis.

Change to organic cocoanut oil. It is so healthful for you that you can eat it with a spoon and it would help you lose weight. You can saute onions and garlic again! Yes, it is a hydrogenated oil, but the ONLY ONE that is good for you and the only oil (except for grapeseed oil) that can reach high heats without turning rancid on the spot! DO NOT COOK with olive oil. Olive oil is very good for you, but cold (or room temperature, in other words, not heated) on salads, etc. Back to organic cocoanut oil, you can add a scoop in your fruit smoothie or whatever, just take 3 TBS a day for optimum health improvement! Go ahead, put it in your search engine!

does it make a huge difference if the onions are cooked vs raw? I personally can't stand most raw forms of onion, but I always include them when Im preparing any food stovetop

Green leafy vegetables can be like poison - unrelated to pesticides, etc. They can be detrimental to good health on their own, even if organically grown!

They are very high in oxalate, which is the main cause of most KIDNEY STONES, the calcium-oxalate kind (75-80%). If your diet has to be low-oxalate, you have to limit oxalate intake to 45-50 mg. per day, which is impossible if you eat green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, which is approx. 700 mg. per half-cup cooked. The oxalate builds up in your kidneys, binds with calcium, and builds kidney stones.

      You don't want kidney stones!

Whole grains, fruit skins, seeds and nuts, dark chocolate, and tofu are also fairly high in oxalate, especially tofu.

Vegetarian/Vegan diets are not good for everyone. Only meat and dairy are free or mostly free from oxalate.

The only super food missing here is to add (each day) even a small course of sea kelp.
But Holly is age 45 with 4 kids and if she's looking like this by eating right with these foods - I'd gladly sign up for the program.

I think the idea is great and these foods can definitely make a difference in people's lives. I would have liked to the video to share "appropriate portions" in order not to send the mixed message that since something is good for you, you can eat as much as you want. We all know this is not the case with nuts, grains or sugars.

      Thanks for the info.
