10 Things You Shouldn't Leave Your Toddler Alone With...

All the babyproofing books tell you about covering the sockets, eliminating sharp edges and corners and putting safety latches on the cabinets, but that's only half the battle. Things definitely change when your baby becomes mobile, but they get even crazier when your mobile baby becomes a fully functioning toddler. I'm not sure if there is a complete toddler proofing book, but here are 10 things that should be in it.

1. Markers. Because walls aren't the only white things they'll destroy. Do you know how hard it is to get marker off teeth?

2. Toilet paper. Even though I've explained to my daughter she only needs 2 squares, she insists on unraveling at least half of the friggin' toilet paper roll every time she uses the bathroom. It baffles me why I need to buy toilet paper every week when there are only 2 of us using it.

3. A belt. After reading Farah's scary encounter, I'm hyper-sensitive about not leaving belts laying around anymore.

4. Mommy's nice shoes. Because little feet and sticky hands have a weird way of destroying beautiful suede pumps beyond repair.

5. A cell phone or tablet. Yes, I know you have a smart phone, but there's a good chance your toddler is smarter. I've heard stories of kids accidentally racking up crazy charges in the app store. My daughter constantly calls people I'd rather not talk to.

6. Any beauty product you even remotely value. Unlike most OTC products, beauty products don't come with childproof tops. That means your little one can easily pop the top off that eyeliner and go to town on his/her face and/or your walls. Same goes for lotion, which my daughter is particularly fond of rubbing all over herself... and her clothes. Oh, and nail polish.

7. Exercise equipment. Farah referenced the terribly tragic story about Mike Tyson's daughter getting caught in the treadmill, but I also know of a toddler who broke his foot because he dropped one of mom's dumbbells on it. I know I said it's our responsibility to keep our kids from becoming overweight, but this is not the way to do it.

8. Toothpaste. My daughter is currently obsessed with brushing her teeth, so earlier this week I made the mistake of letting her do it alone. When I went into the bathroom to check on her, what was 5 minutes before a full tube of toothpaste was now half empty. Her preferred brushing method? A nice pile of toothpaste in the sink that she occasionally dipped her toothbrush into.

9. Glasses. This definitely goes for prescription glasses, but also applies if you care at all about your sunglasses. You'd think I would have learned when my little girl broke my last pair of glasses attempting to put them on her babydoll, but no. I still mistakenly leave them within her arm's reach every once in a while and without fail they're either wrapped around a stuffed animal or under her foot.

10. The remote control. Don't call the authorities, but I do sometimes plop my little girl in front of the TV so I can make a phone call or do the dishes. I never, however, leave the remote. Ever since that one time I caught her watching Hung, she's not even allowed to touch the remote.

Also, never leave your child alone with a balloon...more children die from suffocation after playing with balloons than anything else. If it pops and your child swallows a piece of it, the only way to remove it is surgery if it gets stuck in their throat.

Maple syrup. I forgot to put it back into the kitchen cabinet. Walked into my living room to find my son pouring it all over his train table!

lol How about baby powder? It's not usually a good sign when a barely three year old comes in asking where the vacuum is.

I have 4 year old twins so here is the list of DO NOT leave alone with in my home:
    1) Clean laundry - it ends up dirty in 5 seconds and I have to wash it again
    2) Their potty chairs- Ummm No need to explain the smell or the mess here
    3) Dish Soap- My son gets on the counter and then he pours it all over the floors- He tells me he's cleaning LOL
    4) Shampoo- They will take a bath and use an entire bottle of tearless shampoo- I even put it up and they still will get it....

My boys have a tatic they use against me it's called you go this way I got that way she can't get us both LOL and they use it daily!

Qtips. Our little guy is obsessed w qtips. He likes to shove them EVERYWHERE and also likes to eat the cotton tips off and spit them out wet all over the house. Silly toddlers.

A stool - so he can get into the treat area of the cupboard. My son calls it a sneaky. "I did a sneaky mama. I am sorry". as he has a mouth full of jelly beans.

I have had to put laches up the top of every door in the house expect my daughters bedroom door and the toilet door so that I can sleep with some ease as she will get up & out of bed at all hours of the night I have woken up in the morring to find food all over the place@ 5.30 am her watching dvds at 3am on more than one occation, her doing gardening with my pot plants in the middle of the living room floor with all the dirt tipped out, all the food in the fridge out on the floor in one heap, her trying to clean the whole bathroom with my shaving cream plus the carpet, chocolate syirp covered sofas and she is only 3

yes Rowan we pee but you either confine the child depending on their age or have them sit outside the open bathroom door.

I agree with omg- who lives a toddler alone! They can QUICKLY get into many things. I am a nanny for a 27 month old and if I have to leave the room to clean up after lunch etc I either take him with me into the kitchen with a toy to play with or if he is watching a show(educational only) I place him in his highchair where I KNOW he can't get into anything.

Vaseline!! My 21 month old seems to be drawn to it, for some reason. And that stuff is no fun to clean up.

I love all these self righteous comments about never leaving a kid alone ever. Don't you people pee?

I have twin boys, Ewan and Eagan, so you can imagine the conspiracies concocted by these two, and the messes they create together. As I was getting ready to leave for a nice, summer beach wedding, the twins woke up from their afternoon nap. I figured I'd change their diapers for my mother before I left, since I still had some time. I went into their room to find Eagan with white stuff all over his hands and face. I turned on the light and discovered that he had hung over the side of his crib and reached across to the changing table where he plucked a brand new tube of Desitin out of the basket. He used a little himself, then passed it on to Ewan. Only Ewan decided it tasted pretty good and proceeded to eat the WHOLE TUBE. Needless to say, Ewan was vomiting white bile for the rest of the night. The plus side to this is that at least they were sharing.

It took me some time to realize that there actually is a way to shut off the water dispenser of the fridge! We spent bucks on baby gates, doorknob safety covers, and safety latches for cabinets, the refrigerator, the oven, and various other things. Also covers for the oven/stove controls. Our little engineer could undo the first cabinet latches by the time he was three, so we found some more that take more coordination and some amount of strength! We also had to figure out a way to latch the cat box, as cat litter is fun to play with. (FYI, we poked holes in the box and the cover, put pieces of wire through them and twisted the wires.) He was only following big sister's good example, I can't remember as much of what she did, but she opened the childproof Tylenol bottle at 18 months! Fortunately, I was right there with her, I just hadn't gotten up yet to put it away after giving her some medicine.

And anyone who NEVER turns his/her back on a child or never has to go to the bathroom is NOT HUMAN!

K, I'm kind of with OMG. While it is definitely necessary in a Mommy's life to leave your tot out of sight for small periods of time while you swich laundry, put lunch together, etc, I think 2 minutes is the most you should EVER let them out of sight. Did you know it can take less than 2 minutes for a toddler to drown ina toilet? So, I'm not Supermom, and have had to learn that lesson myself after many cups of water/snackbowls/household plants have been dumped. But keep your eyes on those crafty little ones! They're always smarter than you think they are! :)
