"Tell the Truth, B.B Wolf" by Judy Sierra-
The last page of this children's picture book has an illustration that says "Fairy Tales Remodeled," and that's the best way to describe this installment in the "B.B. Wolf" series by Judy Sierra. This story takes the tale of "The Three Little Pigs" and tells it from the Big Bad Wolf's (a.k.a. B.B.Wolf) perspective. Only B.B. Wolf? He exaggerates and well, he lies. In this version, the three pigs take him to task and he finally speaks the truth. The story is fun and adults will enjoy it as a read-aloud book. But the illustrations by J. Otto Seibold are outstanding. (And you should check out any book illustrated by Seibold.) less

I was chatting with a mom a few days ago about the struggle to get kids to read over the summer. The challenge for some kids is not that they don't want to read. Sometimes they just can't find a good book to curl up with on a lazy summer afternoon.

I love children's literature and because my older son is an advanced reader, I like to read books before he does so we can talk about them -- it helps me know that he comprehends what he's reading. (And it helps out when he asks me a complicated question about plot or characters.)

I promised my friend I'd give her a list of books I think kids would love to read before school starts over the next few weeks. (I know! So soon.) Check out the slide show for my picks (and really, my kids' picks because they love these books, too!).

I've recommended a few books for kindergarteners and first graders, which can be read alone or out loud by a parent. I've also included several for kids in second/and third grade through middle school. I didn't add age ranges because it's you, the parent, who is the best judge of whether the content of the book is appropriate for your kid's age and reading ability.

Happy reading!

What's are your kids reading this summer? What would you add to this list?
