Cleaning Out Your Closet for the New Year: What to Keep, What to Toss!

Sarah Jessica Parker's Most Iconic Sex and the City Looks Here!

Parting with items in your wardrobe is never easy, but one of the best ways to start the New Year off on the right foot is to clean out your closet. We all know that you can never have too many shoes, bags, and well...clothes, but keeping old trends in your closet gets in the way of a fresh new you.

Do yourself some good and get rid of your tired attire by re-organizing your closet. Bring out the good citizen in you and donate what you no longer wear. Even though a piece in your closet may no longer suit your style, there are many people in need of warm clothes this winter. Unsure of where a donation center is near you? Go to clothingdonations.org to find a drop box or schedule a pickup in your area.

Dating Advice: How to Get Out of the "Friend Zone"

    Toss Graphic Tees:

Remember all those graphic tees you have stuffed in the way back of your drawers? Get rid of them. Graphic tees are only good for one thing: looking goofy. Unless the tee has special sentimental value, ditch it!

Hang on to those basic tees and tanks. You can use them for layering or pairing with a sweater or blazer.

    Toss Tight Pants:

We all have that old pair of pants that just don't seem to fit anymore. Hanging onto the idea that you'll work off the weight and once again fit into the pants is inspirational, but not practical. Get rid of tighter pants and find a new pair that fits your body appropriately.

Visit the StyleCaster Shop for a fresh new pair of denim

Take a look at the hemlines of your pants; if they are ripped, torn, or tattered, try to salvage them with a DIY hem. If they're too short after the hem, consider making them actual shorts. If all else fails, toss.

    Toss Tween-Age Dresses:

Dresses are a staple in any wardrobe. If you still have dresses that make you look like a tween-age girl though, you might want to toss them. As you get more sophisticated, so should your style.

Only keep dresses you think you might be able to get tailored or take in yourself, making an old dress new again.

    Toss Damaged Heels:

Any pair of shoes that has a completely worn-down heel, broken straps or buckles, or seriously scuffed leather is most likely at the end of its lifespan. If you're hanging onto a painful, blister-inducing pair you hardly wear just because you think they're super cute, it's not worth the closet space.

what a completely useless article. I am now stupider for reading it. I think I will snort bleach to clean the absolutely irrelevant information that my brain just took in. My braincell count has decreased dramatically. Someone stab my eyes with a sharp pencil, please.

IF THE CLOTHES are in usable shape..PLEASE CONTACT a non-profit charity..SALVATION ARMY , ANY FAITH BASED THRIFT STORE. they can take your donations and give you a tax receipt for them. win for both sides. PLEASE FOR GOODNESS SAKE IF IT GOOD DONT THROW IT AWAY. thank you.

Good advice except for the shoes and the lack of info for what to do with "tossed" clothes. Damaged heels can be fixed at your local cobbler for about $6, and if you spent a decent amount on them, they have quite a bit of life left after the first heel wears out. I get my favorite shoes and boots re-heeled every year. This is the 21st century - reduce, reuse, and recycle! Donate "tossed" clothes to a charity rather than throwing them away. Most charities will come to your house for pickup these days.

I disagree with the tossing of the shoes. If you think they are "super cute" then find a good cobbler or shoe hospital. They can repair the heel and fix them up. In this current economy its cheaper than buying new ones.

No! Ladies, save those heels and bring them to a shoe repair shop. New heel tabs are $10! Buckles are very low cost to repair also. A great pair of shoes is well worth a tune up at the shop.

      Toss out graphic tees?
Wow...women must be bored to tears while getting dressed.

Hey! I look cute in my tween-age dresses!

that "tween" dress looks like it could be a cute shirt
    • Eric  •  2 years 4 months ago
Why the hell couldn't you just take your heel in to a shoe repair to fix instead of throwing them away? That is such a wasteful and unnecessary suggestion.

I think these articles are a waste of time. bottom line is - if you look good in it or you like it - keep it. There is already too much waste in this world. Obviously if it is uncomfortable, broken or just not your style - you would have gotten rid of it or plan to without any help from garbage articles like this. Give us some info we can actually use!

State owned mental hospitals need clothing donations and Texas is the only state that doesn't have any as far as I know. The St. Vincent DePaul shop is Catolic and has been around for ages. Mens clothing is in real short supply and super big sizes for females.

My 13.00 shoes look tattered but they were such a good buy including UPS I bought 3 pr. I stash stuff and never drugs.

Thanks for the light subject dear reporter writer etc. The comments for the most part are great I felt right at home here.

She should toss out all her clothes. Every single item
    • Susan  •  2 years 4 months ago
      Another tip:
I have an extra bedroom in my house, so I took all of my clothes and put them on a portable rack in the spare room. I had to go into that room to get my clothes each day. After I wore the item, it went into my bedroom closet. I did this with underwear, socks, bras and pajamas, too. After about 10 months, I packed up all the clothes that were left in the room and donated or sold them.
      This really worked for me!

      Also to toss:
-single sock that haven't seen a mate in years.
      -sweaters that have pills
-anything with a hole that can't be fixed (or isn't worth fixing)
-underwear more than a few year old
    • Merry  •  2 years 4 months ago
Oh, I would love to just grab all of it and throw it out. I still have clothes from when I worked. I havent worked in 18 years....ugh...I hate the thought of going through it but would love it when it was over!

I bet the people in Haiti wished they can do this task! Maybe you people should "toss" them over to Haiti!

Let's encourage everyone to stay overweight and buy bigger jeans instead of getting more fit and losing weight.
    • sandy  •  2 years 4 months ago
great advise. I find things sometimes that I have not wore for YEARS. And shoes OMG. How many pair of black flats do I really need? OK I am inspired.
