Want to find love online in the New Year? Not if you've gained weight

A website that unabashedly asks members if they want to guarantee that all of their dates will always be beautiful has taken their commitment to making looks the highest priority for singles to a whole new level. Beautifulpeople.com, an international dating and social networking site, has offed 5,000 members for gaining weight over the holidays.

According to BBC news, the purge was prompted by members already on the site. After fielding complaints, members with post-holiday photos showing they'd gained weight were dismissed. The countries best represented on the "naughty" list? The US, UK, and Canada.

If you think keeping your membership in the season of parties and indulgence is tough, try joining in the first place. People who want to join are voted on by existing members to determine whether or not they are attractive enough to participate.

As if this wasn't size-ist and ridiculous and surface enough, site founder Robert Hintze added a nice, thick layer of frosting to the whole horrid cake, saying that the business mourns the loss of members but adheres to the customers' demands for a "high standard of beauty."

"Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded," he said.

If a few extra eggnogs made your jeans tight in the last month or if you are (as the site asks right there on the homepage) "too ugly to sign up", then maybe it's best move along to one of the many, many other dating sites out there that will happily take your cash without requiring a virtual weigh-in. And who knows? You might just find a phenomenal partner or someone fun to hang out with next Saturday night who enjoys your brilliant mind, quick wit, musical genius and sassy sense of style -- as well as your no-matter-what-size bod.

I believe that could happen far more than I believe, as Beautifulpeople.com touts in a quote from CNN, that they are the "sexiest website in the world today."

What do you think? Should size matter on a dating site?

Designed by MEN. Most men are short, overweight, balding, and want a tall, skinny SUPERMODEL driving their hot red Ferrari--coming to pick them up, cook them dinner and them have sex with them all night long. EVERYONE is BEAUTIFUL, everyone is special. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is just a fantasy site for ugly men to try to catch gorgeous women. Just go to Vegas and pay for it already.

Wow! Well let me tell everyone on here & the owner of beautifulpeople.com that I do have a fiance that looks like he could be a male model in an adult film. That is what I have attracted a lot when I was dating is a lot of skinny guys or stick thin men. When I am a bbw. I love it. But my fiance saw my inner beauty more even though I don't look ugly or anything. But I am very beautiful. I get starred at still & can't understand why. Anyways, to me I have the inner beauty & outer beauty going on & always will till I am gray haired & old w/my hubby.

The thing is, looks don't last forever! & that owner calling women fatties?! Yeah all I say is hindsight is 20/20. & there are ugly & fat people in this world that are loved or will be loved by anyone. My fiance has always told me that God made me b/c He wanted to make me this way. I got tired of trying to impress back in high school & have been myself since. That is a beautiful, sweet, nice, loving, sexy, laughable, huggable, kissable, good-hearted person. & there are more words to describe me, but can't think of them.

Anyways, this sight is for losers & idiots. Now there will be more losers & idiots in this world.

Honestly, as shallow as it is, as far as I know it's not against the law to ban "ugly fatties" from signing up for a dating site. There are sites for only wealthy people, only smokers, only goths... The only way this particular site is different is that potential users are rated on looks before signing up.

At least the owner of this site if honest and upfront about it.

Anyway, in the real world, don't we initially judge potential mates on looks? I don't care what anyone says, call me shallow if you will, but looks DO matter. How many people would honestly approach someone they weren't physically attracted to?

I guess I don't consider gaining a handful of pounds over the holidays as reason to get dumped or kicked off a shallow minded dating site..!

I've done the internet dating thing on and off for years--it's brutal enough w/out someone telling you that extra five pds of water weight is going to get you ousted from the club...

While I agree one shouldn't be 50 pounds overweight, etc... I think way too much emphasis is placed upon the scale and what size jeans you wear....

so if its put to a vote by the members... and a mojority says no... what about the minority? is it just 'sucks for you, this may be your perfect match, but over 50% of the other people on this site didnt like them, so too bad?' aside form the people being kicked out (give them a month or two to lose weight, why dont you??) what about the people who said yes, let them in, I want the chance to date them?! isn't that just a *little* unfair?
and to what people are saying, I do take looks into account when I'm looking for a boyfriend. But my current boyfriend won me over with his personality. Because at first, he scared the crap outta me. he looks at least 5 years older than me, and since I look older than I am, I thought he was ten years older. But we've been together for over a year (in high school!!) and you know, I have to say its personality that really makes a person. Now, he is the most handsome, hottest guy I've ever laid eyes on. And my friends were saying I was a freak to date him when we started out. to all you people who say looks are more important, you're missing out!
ps, i'm sorry if my previous comment was harsh, i was still in shock from reading the article.

Okay, I'm probably going to get seriously attacked for this one, but honestly, I have to largely agree with Vix, katie and Audrey on this one.

For one thing, for all the people blasting this site, I wonder how many of you have not or WOULD NOT consider looks at all in a potential partner? To most people, looks DO matter whether you want to admit it or not! And when it comes to gaining weight, it's not just about looks. It's also about health and lifestyle (which personally matters even more than asthetics alone to me). Pride in one's phsical apperance regardless of age also rates very high for me.

More importantly of all though (in my opinion) is that it's no more tasteless to have a dating website which includes physical appearance as a factor than lifestyle, religion or even ethnic factors. Many people consider ALL of these things highly important, so why should we blast the one that considers weight? I just don't see what makes it so much more wrong than any other dating website that caters to specific groups of people.

How could anyone on this site possibly be interested in another human being when they are so obviously in love with themselves. There is a reason there are only 5000 members worldwide, there isn't enough room in front of their bathroom mirror for someone else.

It is their site to run how they want.....and stand an ugly person next to an attractive one and see how many dates the ugly one gets....the only people who hate sites like these are people who can't get in! Like it or not we all look for nice looking partners, it is how we all operate. Things like personality and character come later and can often make someone more attractive to us, but we don't go hunt ugly or overweight people from the get go! Everyone has the right to choose how they date and who they date....if this is what the customers of this site want the leave them alone!!! And why does no one take a shot at downing the sites or people that only date overweight people???? should all the skinny people bash them??? No ! why? because it is their right to date as they choose!

Any private club has the right to decide who it's members are going to be. And besides, when you're looking for a call girl or a gigalo, at least you'll know which website to go to. :)

I agree with Nose completely. Vapid people create more vapid, vain, stupid people. No wonder dealing with public gives me a headache! Looks, size should never matter! You don't marry the body\size alone--you marry the personality! In the end, when you are old, ugly and heavy, that is all you'll have! Give me a break with this obsession with perfection. God loves you just the way you are, warts and all!

It's no more superficial if you were searching for only dating partners who are college educated or who are interested in sports. Attractive and fit are no different in terms of criteria than religious or homebody. If you only want to date people who are physically and esthetically pleasing, what's wrong with a site that promotes such a lifestyle? If you don't want to date someone based purely on looks who may or may not be the most hideously ugly person with a rancid heart, then don't go there. I can't imagine looking for a partner online, but if that's your thing and you're fit and attractive, then what's the big deal?

What's sad is that a site like this had 5000 people that they could afford to kick off, and still have members left over.
    • topguy10  •  2 years 4 months ago
I'm going to disagree. They said the members get to vote (assuming it's men and women doing the voting) as to whether or not they think you are attractive enough to be on the website. There are Christian dating websites, Jewish and EHarmony even kicks people out if they are not "suitable" dating material (or so I've heard). Anyhow, I don't think this is that big of a deal. Let the overweight people start a website (I'm sure there is one already) and don't let thin people join....

Obesity is such a prevalent health issue. I posted earlier that I don't see anything wrong with such a site, because like tend to like like. I agree with the others who point out that there are site specific sites eg for Goths, for Skinheads, for RV-ers, for Pinochle players, etc. If you know you don't 'fit', or if it's not you, then stay away, right? And go find where you DO feel a sense of belonging. And why all the righteous indignation and 'horror'?

I've been a nurse practitioner for a long time. Health care providers have seen America Spread. Rapidly. Deadly. An extra 100# does terrible things to the heart, the lungs, the skeleton and the musculature. Diabetes. Hypercholesteremia. A sure rotten gallbladder. Early onset kidney failure secondary to the obesity and diabetes. Ruins the knees and the hips and the back.

An extra 20-30 really translates to shaving off ten years of life expectancy: combine all that with smokes and Diet Pepsi (SO BAD FOR THE BONES) and take off another 5 years expectancy.

My Mom's generation (she's 78 now): "housewives" of the fifties and sixties: most did not work outside the home, did not drive, walked a LOT, had large families, cooked BIG three squares, had wringer washers, hung the clothes on the line to dry.....had veggie gardens and did canning......those of us older than 50 recall that.

I don't remember ANY large ladies among my Mom's "Susie Circle" Methodist Women's Ladies Group.

Have we ladies gotten lazy? I can't believe that: hell, we work 24/7. I know there are large gentlemen as well, but I'm not addressing that because my point is that I DO think women ARE physically active. And still large.

We have about 30 persons 40 and under that are on the wait list for bariatric lap banding (ALREADY APPROVED) and another 50 attempting to qualify.

So my feeling is that obesity is not so much an aesthetic issue as it is an issue of health. Plenty of larger folks are quite physically beautiful in my opinion but then beauty is in the eye truly of the beholder. Fat is just so horrifically deadly.

If one wants to lose, then it's one day at a time. One pound at a time. Walking walking. Light weights. Palm size servings of food (everyone knows what they should not overeat or have too frequently): six frequent meals per day....water water 68 oz min/day.

You'll breathe better. You won't be so fatigued. You will sleep better and your moods improve. You will want more sex. You will want for sure to buy a new outfit and you'll be healthier and feel real good about being that way.

wow.......is this for real, every ones view of beauty is different. i may think someone is beautiful and someone else may not. and how do they know that the people who are posting pics of "themselves" are really them and the picture is not photoshopped. shallow people that join that site will find themselves alone and miserable.
