Many singles are now on dating sites; it's no longer a taboo way of meeting someone and is actually a common method. However, there's still a problem that's similar to one that many encounter in person: what to say when you first initiate conversation. The profile says a lot, but the first message can say even more. If you're giving online dating a go and have no idea where start with the first message, there are several ways to initiate conversation that could help you meet your ideal partner.
Have something to say
Saying "Hi" or "How are you?" isn't good enough. Chances are you're not going to get a response back if you send that type of message. Why? Because it's boring and shows zero effort. If you can't figure out something else to say, you're better off not messaging him until you do.
Mention common interests
Every profile page usually has a section of interests and a section to write a short paragraph, so glance through the information and look for common interests you can bring up. One of the best things about a dating profile is that you already have a good amount of conversation starters right in front of you that you can use to your advantage. Make use of them!
Keep the message short
You don't have to send a long paragraph to get his attention; he probably won't even read it if it's too long. Make it short and sweet. A few sentences is the perfect length; you can say enough without saying too much or too little.
Ask a question
One of the best ways to get a response is to ask him a question and "How are you?" isn't going to cut it. Give him an excuse to tell you about his interests and continue the conversation. Mention a little something about yourself, but for the most part make the first message all about him.
Check your spelling and grammar
Maybe spelling and grammar hasn't always been your strongest area, but when you're making a profile or sending a message, you have plenty of time to proofread. Make sure to also avoid abbreviations, especially the most annoying ones - da, dis, dem or dat to name a few. Stick to full sentences and use spell check.
A lot of women wait for the guy to send the first message, but don't be intimidated. You have nothing to lose, so don't hesitate to take a chance. Show him you read his profile and be genuinely interested in what he has to say and you could end up getting a response from the type of guy who is exactly right for you.
