Forget those cross-country trips smushed into the back of a station wagon -- you know, the ones that were your parents' idea of a great vacation; these days, kids are welcome everywhere from African safaris to chartered sailboats. So pack a bag for your little wanderers (and for yourself) and set out to see the world, family style.
Your first stop: Costa Rica. It's an easy flight from much of the United States, and unless you live in a rainforest it will look very different from what you're used to on the daily trips between home and school. Different parts of the country offer everything from jungle zip lines and ATV rides to gorgeous beaches and surf lessons, so everyone in your family can participate -- and the family that plays together, stays together.
