10 Old Wives' Tales About Pregnancy & Childbirth

10 Old Wives' Tales About Pregnancy
10 Old Wives' Tales About Pregnancy

When I was pregnant with both of my girls, I would get comments from friends (and sometimes, even strangers) about the things they knew to be true.

"You are carrying low. It's for sure a boy!" and "Oh you have bad heartburn? So did I, and my baby had TONS of hair!" These old wives' tales are funny and often debunked by those in the medical profession. Although, many women swear by some of these "truths" when it comes to pregnancy and childbirth. Read through and see what you think!

1. Gain a child, lose a tooth
Funny, even my dentist told me there was a little truth to this one! I had some dental problems after one of my pregnancies. What about you?

2. Heartburn? Baby's got a full head of hair!
I can personally attest to the truth behind this one. I had terrible heartburn with both girls and they were both born with tons of hair!

3. Carrying high? It's a girl!
Is your little one bunched up right under your ribs? This old wivestale claims it's a girl!

4. Carrying low? It's a boy!
If you are carrying low, chances are, it's a boy! (Some say!)

5. Dad is gaining sympathy weight!
There's not much scientific evidence to back this one up, but chances are Dad is gaining a little extra weight, what with those late-night milkshake trips and all!

6. Seeing a mouse means hairy birthmark for baby?
This one is centuries old, but carries little truth. (Kind of creepy, eh??)

7. A full moon will bring on labor
Hospitals are packed with laboring moms during a full moon. What do you think? Any truth to this one?

8. Eating pineapple will induce labor
Well, settle for pineapple when pregnant. Some women say this works. I ate like four pineapples one night and it didn't do anything for me.

9. Eating eggplant parmesan will induce labor
This old wives' tale is lesser known, but some women really swear that it works for them. Did it bring your labor on?

10. Your baby's birthday will determine his demeanor
The song goes…

Monday's child is fair of face,
Tuesday's child is full of grace,
Wednesday's child is full of woe,
Thursday's child has far to go,
Friday's child is loving and giving,
Saturday's child works hard for a living,
But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day
Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

Any truth in this one??
