19 Kids, 19 Schedules: How the Duggars Stay Organized

A chore chart keeps things organized.A chore chart keeps things organized. Even though we're able to spend a lot of time with one another in our family, we still have to keep tabs on who's doing what, who needs to be where and what's on our to-do and shopping lists. We still use a hard copy calendar, but we've come to rely on technology more and more.

We use the Cozi iPhone app -- it's great, and it's free. It's accessible to our whole family, and if any of our older children have something coming up they can punch it into the Cozi calendar themselves and we all know what's going on.

It helps us keep organized calendar-wise, as well as our to-do and shopping lists. If Jim Bob and I are talking about something on the family to-do list we can just add it in. Jim Bob may say, "OK we'll put that on John's to-do list." And if our older girls are out shopping then they always know that they can pull up the shopping list and see what we need from Sam's or Wal-Mart or wherever they happen to be.

For families that have some older children, younger, or just a busy schedules, it helps to keep everybody on track. But our hard copy calendar is still where I put all of my little notes about what happened that day or something funny one of the kids said. I haven't been the best about doing baby books, but if my kids say something I want to remember I'll say, "Run and write that on the calendar right now! We don't want to forget that -- it's too funny to miss."

So we jot all those little things on the calendar on the edges and around the appointments. I love my hard copy calendars because I can go back and look at those from years gone by and remember every activity we had for that week and the funny things the kids did, the new tooth that was cut or the tooth that was just lost -- they're all in those calendars. And they were priceless when we were writing our books -- to and able to go back and look at those calendars because it reminded us of a lot of different things. And that was wonderful.

I need to start typing in those sweet little things the kids say and the funny things they do into the family journal part of the app. But the big wall calendar is our hard copy version of life. Of course, it's always good to have it backed up -- that's what my older kids say. "Everything's going digital and you have to have everything backed up!" I'm like, "Yeah, you're right. I have to get into the swing of that."

I miss the Duggars...their life & their family certainly had more to offer than the Kardashians, the Real Housewives, Jersey shore & the long list of other worthless stupid shows

I respect their right to have that many children, but I do not think it is physically a good thing for a woman to have child after child - and I certainly could not and would not do so myself.

Wow. The Duggars have 19 children & they're able to make, and KEEP a schedule. Good for them. My parents had 3 of us, & they've always done their best for us, but many times disorganization reigned supreme. There were days my father forgot to pick me up at my piano lesson, or my mother would forget about brownies and show up to collect my sister when school let out.

I never hear people criticizing the Amish about their lack of birth control usage.

      How is this any different?
      • Lily 3 months ago
It's different in that the Amish don't exploit the number of their children for publicity and financial gain.
      • Shelly 3 months ago
Lily I dont think the Duggars exploited their children for publicity...I think the public brought them into our homes and want to tune in. To them it doesnt seem to matter wheather we The public are there at all......but hey if theyh can benefit from curiousity...I say go for it!

Shelly, I whole-heartedly believe that at first it wasn't for financial gain. I think they were just a large family that happened to get noticed by the media.

However, once she kept getting pregnant and announcing she was pregnant before she started to show...that's when it became a financial thing for me. If they really didn't care, they'd let the media find out on their own instead of telling them early so they can get the cameras in their house before the birth. How many times have we heard of celebrities (who already have way too many cameras in their lives to actually like it anymore) get caught with a baby bump and have no choice but to confess? That's the sign of people really not wanting the media to know about their upcoming bundle of joy. Not for the Duggars though, they want the media to know as soon as they find out.

I personally want 2-3 childern, not 19 but it's their lives. At least they aren't octomom and living off the government. I love the way they bring up their kids(except the bathing suits, I think a tad overboard, but who am I to judge) I love the family is always together and they have good traditional family values.

I've said it before, the Duggers are what every family should use as an example of how to raise children with values, morals, RESPECT (that seems to be lacking in many of this country's children) appreciation, support and teamwork. There is nothing wrong with having the older children help with the younger ones. What better way to teach children than a peer that is within the family and understands what their parent's expect. I think it's awesome how those kids go overseas and do missionary work, don't ever complain about not having enough "things," and NONE of them have any emotional/mental issues like depression. I think that alone speaks volumes.

I have great respect for the Duggars. However, we really dont know if any of them have emotional issues etc. In a family such as that, I suspect it would be hard for a child struggling with depression (for instance) to admit it to anyone. Also, most of the children are still young- who knows what will happen down the road? Not wishing for anything bad, just saying we dont know yet.

I think it is not healthy on a womans Body to have one child right after another but if thats what they choose to do so be it!. That is their Business as long as they support them and not the tax payers. People who continue to have babies at Taxpayers expense is where I see red!!! They should be Fixed after the second one they apply for welfare for.

I love watching her around all of her children and husband, there is something very calming about Michelle Duggar. It would be a pleasure to meet her. She seems so kind, caring and gentle. What a lucky family to have her as their lead.

Joann - The Duggars are part of a religious sect that I'm not entirely sure is connected to any particular faith. From what I've read it's a spin off from Mormon, but with the way they talk it's really hard to get a grasp on it. As for the 19 kids, well, she had a bad experience with a miscarriage with an early pregnancy, it was either the 2nd or 3rd. They blamed the birth control for that & decided that they'd just 'put it in God's hands. Their 19th child, Josie, was born premature & with several medical issues that stem from that. Her doctors advised them both that little Josie should be their last child, but nope, sure 'nuf little Josie wasn't even off the breast yet & she's pregnant again & that pregnancy ended in heartbreak since the child died in-vitro. That was just a couple of months ago. I think we can all be fairly safe in betting there will be another pregnancy before too long. I'm convinced that she is one of those strange women that is addicted to being pregnant & once the babies are old enough to hand off to the older kids to care for that's what happens. We are told they are able to care for them financially, they do seem to have enough money & of course they were paid quite well for their reality TV show.

Their religion has nothing to do with Mormons at all. They follow the Quiverful faith, I think is how you spell it. I'm not sure if it's some form of Protestantism, but it is a form of Christianity.
      • Lesley A 3 months ago
They deny being a part of the Quiverfull movement but that website sells their books and DVDs.

They are part of the Church of Christ religion. I have gone to that church many times and they do not suggest women have tons of kids. That is a personal choice. I live in Arkansas and there are so many church of Christ churches here it's unreal. But this is a town because of them that cares about everyone that lives here. These churches do more for the poor than any church i know. I am not a follower of the faith but i sure love the people here. So very kind and loving. Every faith should be like the Church of Christ. This would be a much better world.

The Duggars scare me a bit! I am 70 yrs old...married 53 yrs...2 daughters...5 grands and 5 great grands so far! I was raised similar to the Duggar children, and rejected this lifestyle at 17 because I felt I was "out of touch" with a realistic view of life in the USA. All, I wanted as a young person, was to do some of the things that other kids did, like rollar skating at the rink...wearing a one piece bathing suit at the city pool, etc. I hope that the young people who idolize the Duggars, understand that not everyone can support that many children and that their lifestyle is EXTREME and will cause their children to feel alienated from the real world! I have great respect for the Duggars. My problem is the whole "quiverfull" thing. While the Duggars are able to afford this large family, many families in this movement are NOT. I know a family who also (leaves it up to God). They are on food stamps, and often need help to pay their rent, but still wont use birth control. I think God gave us the ablility to think for a reason. We have the knowledge and technology to limit family size- the responsible thing is to not have more children than you can afford to care for.

I don't see how anyone could find something bad to say about this family...Michelle seems like a pure-hearted woman with a sweet spirit and I believe they are a very blessed family. Now would I have 19 children, hell no! But I do respect this family.
