How about things like local pharmacy giftcards (for the late-night diaper/formula runs), boxes of "Be Kool" patches (an absolute godsend for quick, non-medicated fever-relief), or packs of cloth diapers (these make the BEST burp cloths and last FOREVER)?

Wooden ducks? clothing stickers? Wood hangers? Definately not useful. This article gets an F for failure IMO. Seems really poorly thought out.

The most unique gift I have found on the web for a new mommy is the Mommy's Medicine Cabinet. Check them out at www.MommysMedicineCabinet.com or on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mommys-Medicine-Cabinet/153653191333400

This article was useless to me. Not a good idea among them. I guess I'll buy diapers & baby wipes, and throw in a Target gift card. The Mom-to-Be is expecting twins, and will need lots of diapers and wipes. ►Nice picture frames are a good idea, too. ♥Ea♥

honestly I think the magnetic clothes would never be used at my house.

my husband hate magnets because of what they do to computers and such- pretty sure magnets on baby clothes would never be a first choice for us.

I was very happy to receive diapers, onsies, pajamas, and lightweight blankets. A newborn doesn't need much in the way of cute clothing, but if you see something just too cute to pass up, make sure it it at least a 6M size. Another thing I appreciated was a gift basket of baby lotions, powders, shampoos, bibs, pacifiers, etc. As the days became weeks, I made good use of each item.

Of this list, the only things that would be even remotely useful to me is the magnetic onesies and the tub. Everything else is kinda cute, but nowadays, most new moms really just want the items that they have chosen and put on their registry. If they don't have one, a gift card to a store they frequent is ALWAYS welcome. Personalized hangers, wooden ducks and stickers... not so much. Cute, but not practical.

Nice stuff, but only if the parents-to-be already have the basics. The tub seems practical for easy storage but maybe not so convenient for actual use.

I'd agree that the title of this article is a bit off. Perhaps it should be "7 Unique Shower Gifts" since these a more whimsical than practical.

I give gift cards, or buy things like bottles, blanktes, pacifiers, etc.. Things that will be needed and used multiple times. I never buy clothes for a new baby because they outgrow them too quickly. The few times I have gotten a child a clothing item it is often in a 1T -3T size so they can grow into it.

My mom tends to give new moms-to-be "older" kid's clothing - like for 6 months plus - because EVERYONE wants to give you stuff for the brand new baby that will get used right away. So then the baby grows a bit and then the new parents have 50 outfits that no longer fit.

Like the idea of the breast pads - not everyone thinks about it when they plan to formula-feed or even breast-feed. Practical is good - the cute stuff might get re-gifted or given to Goodwill if it doesn't mesh with mom's style. But if it's useful, it'll probably get used by her.

Some of these gifts might be okay in addition to something practical and/or off the registry - such as the magnetic clothes (might want to get a slightly bigger size so it can be used later in life) or the stickers. But really consider WHOM you are giving it to rather than just think "aw this is cute, they'll love it!"

i always include diapers, they are always needed, and one that I don't find too many other people doing is breast pads. either breast feeding or not, most every woman has a little leakage and especially can be embarassing in public. They may not be the most cute thing in the bunch but I know it will be used.

by far the best gift to give parents is COLD HARD CASH!!!! had a baby shower, which was great, but the clothes-diapers that we got were TOO small for our daughter when she was born. i tell people to give CASH or GIFT CARDS to stores like TARGET,WAL-MART, anyplace that the parents are going to be shopping at. not all babies are born the same size, and not all parents have the same style.

i can understand the magnetic clothes (and i agree that getting them in larger sizes is a very good suggestion). however, i have found that my go-to shower gift is books. it isnt flashy and it doesnt have the biggest "wow" factor at the shower, but i find that it is the most econimically versitile (but 1 book or an entire library, depending on how close you are to the almost-parents), and books are something that will encourage BOTH parents to bond with the child, if by no other means than reading out-loud to the baby. further, i find that a lot of almost-parents forge to add books to their registry. like i said, you wont get the award for the most glamorous gift, but time and again, the new parents will thank you long after the other peoples gifts have been outgrown.

      Sharp-nosed wooden ducks--seriously?

My shower is next weekend, and I have to say I think the BEST gifts will be.....anything off my registry!! Especially as first time mom, I really would be baffled if someone thought wooden ducks or engraved clothes hangers was a better idea than the things I picked out myself that we actually need.......

Cute items just not a good title for article!
