8-year-old Rocker Gets Her Two Step On

8-year-old Juliet has something to thrash about.8-year-old Juliet has something to thrash about.Eight-year-old Juliet is about as far away from cloying bubble-gum pop as you can get. She's like the anti-Rebecca Black. And she's taking YouTube by storm with her new video, "My First Hardcore Song."

    More music at Music.Yahoo.com

"Let's open up this pit!" she yells, slamming on a trampoline filled with stuffed animals. She's wearing a T-Shirt that reads "I Heart Phuket," which is sure to give some helicopter parents heart palpitations. She tosses her long hair, windmills in the street, and howls.

The edgy, black-and-white video -- shot by her mom, photographer Kristina Childs, and produced by a family friend, Australian producer Rob Sharpe -- is interspersed with shots of her beloved dog, Robert, her pet fish, and Juliet in a deserted playground. Juliet wrote most of the lyrics herself, her mom says.

"Yes, this is her first music video," Childs told Yahoo! Shine. "It was all done as fun when Juliet was hanging out at our friend Rob Sharpe's house. He has a studio at home and they thought it would be fun to record a funny song to show me."

"Rob wrote and recorded the instruments over an hour, then got Juliet in to do the vocals which took about 15 minutes," she said. "When I heard the song, besides crying with laughter at how cute the whole thing was I said, 'I HAVE to make a film clip for this!' So a few days later, while we where having a play date at the park. I took the footage. I came home and edited it and posted it on YouTube so I could show my friends and family, then BOOM."  The video garnered more than 4.8 million views in about 24 hours; T-shirts with Juliet's fierce scowl and "Let's open up this pit!" are already available at  Myfirsthardcoresong.com.

According to her mom, Juliet's had a taste for hardcore music since she was tiny. "I have had music playing in our household since she was a baby," Childs says. "When she was a newborn the only way I could settle her to sleep was playing bands like Slipknot and Marilyn Manson."

Her dad, Steven Childs, is a singer/songwriter with the Australian band Bright Lights, and Juliet listens to a wide range of genres.  "Juliet's music taste is quite eclectic," her mom says. "She will happily sing along to Jessie J, Johnny Cash or Michael Jackson."

The Brisbane, Australia-based 8-year-old doesn't have another music video in the works right now, though she thought this one was a lot of fun. "Juliet loves it, she thinks its very cool that she can show her friends," her mom says. "I think her audience may have broadened though."

Who needs sugar and spice when you can have metal and punk rock?

oh..and those little girls on tiaras are not at all cute..or pretty..theyre kind of ugly..just saying...
      • Noel 4 months ago
Actually they are cute if you look at the outward appearance. But when you see the inward they dont look so cute anymore. They look ugly because of the way they act.

You know, personally, I am not into this kind of music, seeing as I am a country boy and that is all that I really listen to with an occasional 80's thrown in. But I have to say that this young lady is very talented. Great voice and imagination. And it looks like she had fun. She was adding music and voice to something that kids do all the time, PLAYING ON THE PLAYGROUND AND PLAYING WITH HER TOYS AND PETS. It is alot better then the kids now days that are out busting up windows, spray painting everything, stealing, robbing and doing drugs. Let her have her fun. This could be a phase she is going through, it could turn into something amazing. Anyone who is hating on this is probably just jealous because THEIR kids are not this talented. Rock on girl.

I totally agree with you on the fact that Juliette is just doing what all kids her age should be doing and that is having fun. We all did this ourselves or had children who did when they were young and we did not stop them from expressing their talents. My daughter, now a law student, would dress her cousins and young friends up in different outfits at age 10 and us parents would watch the fashion show as she would announce each one. It was a blast for us and them. She sang from the time she was six until today. In high school she starred in every Drama Production Play, including Les Miserables and won Best Actress for playing Rizzo in Grease. I never held her back from the arts and she was an honor student all the way!

Georgia- lighten up. The kid is adorable and the video was done with the help of adults around her and in good fun.

Oh GET A GRIP Georgia!!!!!!!! She's a precocious, talented, beautiful young girl who has been this creatively inclined her whole life!!! In no WAY, shape or form will putting her being herself and LOVING it- endanger her safety or welfare!!! She has a support system of engaged, caring, loving and PRESENT parents that have her in an environment of free expression, constantly learning, educating- and having their lives chronicled on youtube (like millions of others out there) is not putting them or HER in DANGER!!!! They did not give out a MAP to their home!!!!! If there are pedophiles in her neighborhood- I'm preeeeeeetty sure they would have seen her or any other child on the block already- so what the HECK is your point!!!!!??? Shut it- be DONE!!! Go find another child to save- there are plenty of abusive households in American you can serve better than on here!

I think people are taking this too seriously... she was just making a cute video for fun, in her neighborhood, with her pets and stuffed animals. It's a nice memory that she can re-watch and laugh about when she's older. I seriously doubt they expected it to go as viral as it did.

Rebecca Black, on the other hand, is a rich kid who's parents paid a crappy production company so she could star in a terrible music video in hopes of being famous. Rebecca Black is expecting people to take her seriously as a "talented" singer. This little girl is just having fun singing about her dog.

Well perhaps it is Thailand's (and Phuket's) reputation as a favorite destination for sex tourists (including pedophiles - qv Gary Glitter for example) that is the controversial thing here. Perhaps everybody needs more education?

I think it's cute and I don't see anything controversial about it. I happen to like that her parents are supporting play, self-expression and just having a good time. At least she's not some fat kid sitting on a sofa watching TV. It appears she has parents who actually spend time with her.

I'm still laughing. How fun!! This is just silly fun, no need to take it too seriously. :) It's gotten a lot of views, because it's kind of the "anti-punk". Hardcore music with her professing her love for her dog. It's harmless. Just smile and let it go.
