8 Outrageous Toys Hitting Shelves This Year

Outrageous toys hitting shelves this year!Outrageous toys hitting shelves this year!Earlier this month, I scoured the Toy Fair in New York City, checking out the newest toys set to hit shelves this year. Every year the toys get more innovative and jaw-dropping - and this year was no exception. Of course there were plenty of amazing eco-friendly, wooden, educational toys that I found (and I'll share eventually!), but let's start with the more outrageous, shall we?

These 8 toys are the ones that spark a simple: "Whoa!". Take a look and tell us what you think of these outrageous toys that are sure to get buzz in 2012:

The Amazing Spider-Man The Amazing Spider-Man
    1. The Amazing Spider-Man R/C Speed Climbing Spider-Man | Ages 5+
Yes, this Spider Man actually climbs walls with vacuum technology. (Note: It kind of sounds like a vacuum.)
    Coming in fall 2012, $34.99

Crayola Digital Light DesignerCrayola Digital Light Designer
    2. Crayola Digital Light Designer | Ages 6+
Although Crayola has tons of new releases set for 2012, this digital light designer is certainly their biggest. This 360-degree dome is designed for kids to create images (that can be animated!) and play games (like maze races and memory games) with LED lights. Kids can save up to 50 drawings, which can be edited and animated at any time. Right now the dome sounds pretty loud (almost like a fan turned on extra-extra high), but I'm hoping Crayola works on making their prototype quieter - at least for parents' sakes.
    Coming in September 2012, $49.99

    Kid-Tough Portable DVRKid-Tough Portable DVR
    3. Kid-Tough Portable DVR | Ages 3+
This is kind of cool, but also kind of ridiculous - mostly because it's $150 for a 3-year-old kid. Made to be durable for "drops and drool," as it was described to me, this portable DVR can be hooked up right to your TV, so you can record up to two hours of your kid's favorite TV shows. When we know parents are already passing back their iPhones for Netflix, will they shell out that kind of cash for a 3.5-inch portable DVR? Would you?
    Coming in May 2012, $149.99

    Master Moves MickeyMaster Moves Mickey
    4. Master Moves Mickey | Ages 2+
This year Mickey's trading in the samba for some sweet breakdancing moves - including a handstand! Ignoring the fact that their "hip" Mickey is rocking a sideways hat and '90s street gear, this dancing mouse is pretty darn entertaining (and impressive!). Even if your kids weren't drawn in by Mickey's ballroom skills last year, they'll probably be amazed by his new hip-hop moves.
    Coming in August 2012, $69.99

    Monopoly zAPPedMonopoly zAPPed
    5. Monopoly zAPPed | Ages 8+
If you didn't like the elimination of money and banking in last year's Monopoly edition, then your head might explode with this one. The newest Monopoly uses your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch as a banking unit, which does all the adding and subtracting for you (and for your kids, of course. Who needs math, anyway?). The technology does have its advantages, of course - especially through virtual mini games that pop up through the Chance and Community Chest cards.
    Coming in June 2012

    LIFE zAPPedLIFE zAPPed
    6. The Game of LIFE zAPPed | Ages 8+
This certainly isn't the LIFE of our childhoods - especially because you need an iPad (and a free app) to play the game. The prices and activities have modernized too, with college or career requiring a $100,000 loan. As much as I hate needing to have an $800 grown-up tool as a necessary play piece, the cool thing about this is it keeps track of where you are in the game. And when you hit certain milestones (like graduation, for example), it plays funny clips from America's Funniest Videos!
Coming soon to Amazon.com and ToysRUs.com, $24.99 (+ an iPad)

Barbie Photo Fashion DollBarbie Photo Fashion Doll
    7. Barbie Photo Fashion Doll | Ages 6+
Barbie's new photo doll is sure to get a lot of buzz - although it probably won't be as controversial as last year's video Barbie. This one has a built-in digital camera that displays the image right on Barbie's shirt. Barbie can hold over 100 images (that can be uploaded to your computer, of course), allowing kids to start sharpening their photo-taking skills.
    Coming in August 2012, $49.99

    Furreal FriendsFurreal Friends
    8. Furreal Friends Baby Butterscotch, My Magical Show Pony | Ages 4+
Furreal Friends have been around since I was little, but their newest Butterscotch horse is unlike anything I've ever seen. It nuzzles close to you, with animated facial expressions and a cuddly body, sensing where you're touching. I'm a grown woman, and it kind of melted my heart.
    Coming in fall 2012, $119.99

What happened to reasonable priced toys? These children today do not play with a toy long enough to pay these prices!

They are still there just go look for them. We get my son Thomas train stuff with the tracks and let his imagination go wild. Kid is to logical for my own good too.

but the TV is portable.. that's the point so kids will have something to do while between bigger TVs

We need outdoor toys that aren't lethal--recall that Yahoo! article featuring a toy cannon that killed someone?

Where are the the toys that requires some imagination and creativity??????

$150 - for a personal video player for a 3 year old! Really, what kid needs that much access to tv?
      • A Yahoo! User 3 months ago
That's called parenting, park the kid in front of a tv or computer screen so you don't have to be bothered.

there are cellphones advertised for that age

The only reason I could imagine wanting this for my child is for long trips - car rides and flights. We've done the trans-Atlantic flight a few times with young children, and even though most of the flights had built-in screens, sometimes the screens don't work. My question is, in a world of smartphones (which have screens at least as large as this one), is this technology even necessary? Our iPod has a screen this size, and much more than 2 hours worth of TV/movie space!

When I was a kid, we were totally stoked if our doll baby had eyes that opened and closed and cried mama and had a vanishing milk, baby bottle... (where did that milk go???) Barbie didn't come along till I was to old to play with dolls. I remember the out burst because she was a grown up with boobs... too anatomically correct... Toys today leave little to the imagination. In the old days if you wanted to play, you went outside and built a fort out of leaves or sticks ... I remember being entertained for hours using a flat piece of wood to grate roads for a rock aka car and sticks with forked bottom for a foot for a person... We used our imaginations and now I see kids who don't imagine anything other than getting a toy that thinks for them... The world has changed mightily and NOT in a good way... in my opinion...

I still think those milk bottles are the coolest things!
      • Nikki_25_2 3 months ago
I still had my milk bottle and my daughters still play with it to this day and like it just as much if not more than i did lol my oldest ,almost 9, wants a DS thing and is still mad at me because i wont get her one. i told her she needs to wait till she is older and can take care of it better. IMO kids that age just are not old enough to be walking around with that kind of money.

My sister had one of those milk bottles...i still think those things were cool

Do these people realize we're in the middle of a recession/depression? Why can't they market toys that are within the realm of cost reality!
      • Kirk 3 months ago
If you feel they are over priced then don't buy them. Does your child actually need these items?
      • confirmed nutz 3 months ago
Kirk is correct, secondly some parents will go out and buy these gadgets for their kids. Think of little Bobby screaming in the check out line because mommy would not buy him the latest coolest toy.
      • stpetejohnny 3 months ago
The prices will correct themselves when they see they aren't selling so well.
If they happen to sell well....we know we have a lot of suckers and whining kids out there.

Kids are getting so many high tech toys that they are getting bored. I remember playing cowboys and indians outside and exploring through the yard. People complain about their kids being over weight and not playing outside. If they would limit certain toys and encourage imaganitive play, then they'd have nothing to complain about.
    • Edward  •  Newark, New Jersey  •  3 months ago
Whatever happened to playing, not just letting the toy play. I grew up when a forked stick was our Army gun, my brother and I were outside from am to pm no matter what season it was, and a couple of Gi Joe figures was an awesome Christmas morning.

sticks, cans, a ball, maybe a hula hoop or a frisbee. DUN!
    • conservative dad  •  3 months ago
Just curious what you push to take a picture with that Barbie camera?
    • Reine  •  3 months ago
Wait until the kids are teens if you think the prices are bad. Your daughter will want sixty dollar jeans and your son's video games will set you back sixty dollars a piece.
    • Mom of 3  •  3 months ago
Why do kids need to take TV with them EVERYWHERE!!! Learn to keep kids busy, teach them to be patient and quiet and save the gadgets for long car trips or other occasional times...I will NEVER buy that for a toddler...ridiculous!!!
    • Ange  •  Vancouver, Canada  •  3 months ago
Wow, I had a ball and a stick when I was a kid! Oh and a Slinky.
    • EarthWindFire82  •  Collierville, Tennessee  •  3 months ago
I found a set of jacks for $1...and since I feel like showing off, I'll buy a set for my kid too!
    • Jessica  •  Killeen, Texas  •  3 months ago
No 3 yr. old needs a portable dvd player. And we wonder why so many children are obese....they need to be out playing not watching t.v. all day. And I wish they would stop re-creating the classic board games. They were great the way they were!
    • Jessica  •  Dallas, Texas  •  3 months ago
This makes me feel horrible and this is the kind of stuff my daughters going to want for Christmas. In an economy like this we need toys that parents can afford, were about to be paying close to $5 a gallon for gas!!! Let’s get real!!!
    • Aeronautee  •  Deforest, Wisconsin  •  3 months ago
I have a novel idea - affordable, durable, low-tech toys that provide a kid the chance to develop and use her/his imagination.
    • RICHARD  •  Gainesville, Florida  •  3 months ago
now why do I need to buy a 8 year old a $500 I pad to play a $30 game?
    • tigerlily  •  3 months ago
And ALL of it made in China, Taiwan, Korea...
    • stpetejohnny  •  3 months ago
That comment about the Furreal pony that the lady said melted her heart....well when I saw the price it melted my wallet.
