Photo Credit: Getty ImagesWhen you hear the phrase "SWAT team," it conjures up the image of elite, highly-skilled special forces brought into a very complex, dangerous situation because of their precision, quick witt and ability to get the job done swiftly.
The image you don't think of is a bunch of guys who are smart but have nothing to do and are just trying to keep busy.
There's a new mom label in town. It's called the "Mommy SWAT team." And SWAT is defined as "Smart Women with Available Time."
Dory in Work+Money has a wonderful post that details what Mommy SWAT teams are all about (and how any working mom should be getting paid her worth).
But the short story is that The Wall Street Journal published an article last week about highly educated stay-at-home moms who wanted more to do in their lives. And as Dory says in her post, these moms are "taking consulting jobs that take a fraction of the time and take a fraction of the pay" of their previous, incredibly high-paying gigs.
Here's the thing. These moms don't have "available" time. They want to work to flex those pre-kid career muscles that they feel like they left behind. Which is all good. But if we're going to slap a label on them, can we at least make it a strong one?
This need to label moms is starting to get a little out of control. Let's review:
-Stay-at-home mom
-Work-at-home mom
-Work-outside-of-the-home mom
-Working mom
-Career-track mom
-Sanctimom
-Helicopter mom
-Free-range mom
-Opt-in mom
-Opt-out mom
Hi, I'm Charlene. And I'm a "Mom." I just happen to work.
I know I'm getting bent around the axle with this mom SWAT team business. Who else is annoyed? And even better, what mom label have I missed on my list?
Another Mom label I can live without: Mommy SWAT teams
