Bald Willow Smith: What Would You Do If Your Daughter Shaved Her Head?

Willow Smith via WhoSay and TwitterWillow Smith via WhoSay and TwitterWhen 11-year-old Willow Smith, the tween singer better known simply for being the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, tweeted a photo of herself with a bald head last week, the buzz was about what a big departure the new 'do is following her 2010 hit "Whip My Hair." ("Hit" may be generous, but the song certainly set the youngest Smith apart from her Karate Kid-brother.)

Willow Smith has posted plenty of photos of herself on WhoSay, including one shot in a Nikki Minaj pink wig, another with a sleek bob and Flashdance get-up, one more with messy hair and a hoodie hiding half of her face. These pictures are typical tween and teen stuff -- every grown woman I know has an archive of those photos taken an arm's length from decades ago when we dyed our hair with henna and wore clumpy electric blue mascara and cut our own bangs with nail scissors on late, bored nights.

The hair-rebel in me is much older with highlights that are professionally highlighted, not frantically painted on minutes before leaving for school. So it's probably no surprise the mama in me cringed to see Willow Smith -- a rising star but still girl -- with a shaved head.

It's not a tattoo, it's not a piercing in the middle of a baby face. It will grow back. Or be kept barely-there. It's not that big of a deal. Still, I saw her as a mama does, and reacted: "ACK! An 11-year old! Sinead O'Connor-ed!"

Jada may have well asked her own Hollywood stylist to take the clippers to Willow's desire to GI Jane her cropped hair. But I can't believe most moms would be be OK with their daughters going bald on purpose.

Be honest: What would you say if your little girl shaved her head?

My mom walked in on my in the bathroom shaving my head when i was 13...all she did was look at me and go "you missed a spot" and grabbed the clippers and fixed it. lol. HAIR GROWS BACK! lol. I shaved my head once...and i got it out of my system. I love my long hair...but it was nice saving on shampoo and not having to use a brush(just a comb towards the end) for like 6 months lol. i think everyone should do it at least once. :)

Why shouldn't she be allowed to be bald if she so chooses?
Just because it isn't conventional doesn't mean it's bad. Little girls are constantly shown that they only way to be beautiful is to have long hair and that simply isn't true.

When I was younger I hated my heavy, long hair that always got in the way and was too long in the summer. However, I didn't think I could still be a "girl" without hair down to my lower back. It took me years to get the guts to chop it off at shoulder length. Being hair empowered sounds silly, but it's important to let kids know that they can look the way they want and still be beautiful. I'd support it.

I think she looks adorable with a shaved head. And I also think it's empowering to a girl for her to feel comfortable enough to shave her head.

I know women who cry horribly when a hairstylist cuts off one too many inches. It's almost self-imposed social enslavement. Women are far too concerned about hair.

seriously? Why have a problem with this? It's hair. Who cares who it's cut?

The mom that I would be today - now that I've been there and done that - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

It's the big battles you have to win.....

LOL. My son shaved his head (and his legs) when he was around 7 or 8. Sadly, he only shaved a lovely reverse mowhawk into his head, then presented himself to me, where I promptly had a heart attack and rushed him to the nearest barber.

Anyway, from the standpoint of hindsight, I can tell you: it was nothing. I think Willow is finding herself, getting the attention she wants and basically becoming her own person. Good for her.

Letting your daughter shave her head is a lot better than letting her get caught up in those beauty pageants...when I see those little girls on tv in those skimpy little outfits it freaks me out...How do you put your little girl out there like that...and then I saw on ellen from an internet clip... this little girl singing to niki manaj...and she said the part about takin her panties off and her dad was in the audience cryin like he was so proud...I am completely sure that that guy need some balls...

I'd have a total #$%$ moment and then say, "Well, it'll grow back."Then I'd tuck that awesome memory in my back pocket and carry it everywhere.

I guess she no longer whips her hair back in forward. Seriously though, why do people care what she does with her hair? It's her choice, she looks beautiful. Good for her for not following what's popular and taking a chance. Hair grows back and she's 11. She's not cutting of her arm or anything.

Off topic......Did anybody see that clip of ellen where the dad watched his little girl sing niki manaj...and the part about takin off her panties...is it just me or does that dad need a beat down...this was about 2 months ago on ellen...I caught it on a clip...I don't watch ellen...

It grows back and honestly I don't think it looks that bad. Our son actually mullet as a toddler until we finally got enough sense to realize that it looked ridiculous and had it cut off so clearly parents don't always know best either. It's not a tattoo or a piercing (in other words, something permanent) so I don't see what the big deal is.

That should read "actually had a mullet." Oops.

Willow lives in exclusive Calabasas/Westlake Village, CA region. She is also tutored and not in regular school. Plus, she has parents who are wealthy enough to afford lavish hair wigs, extensions, and stylists for her. I don't see it being an issue for Willow. If it were an average tween, then yes, she would be mocked in junior high by her peers. Willow Smith lives a privileged lifestyle hopefully free from mean girls.

Why not? She owns her style, and is sending a great example for other girls to be who they want to be no matter who may judge them.

It's only hair. My kids do what they want with their hair. What else do they have that they can change all the time and it will go back??

It's hair. So what? Not your head and it's not hurting her.

why not? it can be liberating.

I would flip out at first then I would try and calm down lol
Then I would get over it
I dont think the school would like it much though

Now she REALLY looks like her dad. I hope she grows it back: it makes her look like a boy.
    • coutterhill  •  Los Angeles, California  •  3 months ago
I would be upset that she would look like a boy. I don't like my boy having long hair either.
      • RavenDreams 3 months ago
But she doesn't look like a boy. She is very pretty and feminine and dresses like a girl.
      • coutterhill 3 months ago
That picture up above, she looks just like a boy to me.
