The original Troll dolls...Remember those little plastic, pot-bellied, pug-nosed, crazy-hair-colored Troll dolls you used to covet as a kid? Some had bejeweled belly buttons, others wore either insanely sparkly or insanely dowdy outfits. You couldn't tell what gender they were (if they were gendered at all) and spent hours fighting over whether the one with yellow hair should have a girl name or a boy name. And if your older brother threw one at you, it hurt...a lot.
Well, they're back! Except perhaps not in the ugly-yet-lovable form you were once so fond of. Coming soon to a toy store near you are Trollz, the new and 'improved' cool-older-cousin-who's-off-at-college-but-comes-home-for-the-holidays-and-lets-you-play-with-her-makeup-bag.
Yup, that's right, slap a "z" on the end of anything and it's automatically cooler! The proof is in the pudding, folks: Trollz, Bratz, Jay-Z.
The once-stout dolls have gone through puberty and they're now taller, thinner, prettier and far more stylish by toy standards. The only remaining vestige of the originals is the rainbow-hued hair, though even that seems brighter and more expertly coiffed.
According to the Today Show, "the original troll dolls debuted in the 1960s with chubby bodies, unruly hair
...and the new Trollz. and pug noses. More recently they've been updated-while they still have only four fingers on each hand, the new Trollz line...features short skirts, bare midriffs, giant eyes and even styled hair."
Looks like the Trollz are now cool enough to hang out with newest incarnation of Dora the Explorer (she wears makeup and has pierced ears!), Rainbow Brite (she's skinny now too!) and the Disney fairies (with their sassy pixie cuts and one-shouldered dresses!).
Frankly, we feel a little cheated. Sure, they weren't particularly attractive, but the old Trolls were cute in their own special way and their arms were always wide open, ready for a hug. These new Trollz are a little intimidating with their funky hair, short skirts and saucy hand-on-hip poses. Can't we all just go back to the days of androgynous gnome-like creatures?
