Duggars Announce 20th Baby: What People Are Saying

    DuggarsBy Charlotte Hilton Andersen, REDBOOK

Michelle Duggar announced this week that she is pregnant with the family's 20th child (and I do mean "family's child" because raising a kid is definitely something done by the whole tribe in their household). Wow. So what do you say to someone who has just explained they will soon have more kids than Lindsay Lohan has second chances? I'd start with "Congratulations." They're happy, the baby is wanted and they have the means to care for their newest little J(ehosaphat? Please??) so however the rest of us may feel about having a "quiverfull" of kids, this is really the only appropriate response. Besides I'm not even half the mom Michelle Duggar is (technically, by the numbers I'm 1/4 of the mom she is) so I'm certainly not in a position to offer advice.

This hasn't stopped the experts from weighing in with their opinions on the latest news from the famously large brood.

On the issue of Bob and Michelle being too old: "I'd rather have nice parents that are 45 years older than me than mean ones who are younger," says one expert on the Today show.

On Michelle being a high-risk pregnancy at 45: "That uterus can't have any spring left in it!" said Dr. Nancy Snyderman who went on to compare Michelle's lady business to a water balloon.

On Michelle possibly dying: "The more pregnancies one has, the greater the risk of a bad outcome that could leave the children that are already born without a mother," said Dr. Philip Darney, director of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health at the University of California, San Francisco.

On Michelle's mental state: "Michelle is thinking: 'Surely it's His will that she live and continue to love and nurture all those beautiful children whom He has blessed her with,' " explains Vyckie Garrison and former member of the Quiverfull movement. She goes on to call her a "maternal martyr."

On the reality show angle: "The Duggars are to families what the Kardashians are to marriage," says Rebecca Jane at FemPop.

And the most pressing concern: "What "J" names are left for the Duggars to use?"

As for the Duggars themselves, Michelle says, "We always have the motto around our house 'There's always room for one more.' They are such a gift, we are so grateful for each one of them." Jim Bob adds, "We didn't want to stop at an odd number either."

Now that you've heard what everyone else is saying about the newest Duggar baby due in April 2012, what do you say on the subject?

Congrats to the Duggars! I guess if you can support them, love them, teach them, then be grateful for them. Names? Well, Julianne, Jayme, Janice, or for a boy Jack, Judd, or Jackson. There are plenty of J names left!!
      • Bry 6 months ago
One of their boys is already named Jackson. Judd is still a possibility though!

Good call! I like Judd for a boy and Julie for a girl! Julianna or Julianne is also fabulous!

There IS a television show involved here, with ratings, sponsors, and money involved. More pregnancies = more moola. And I'd be interested in hearing what the other kids have to say after the show finally goes off the air. Talk all you want about "blessings," this is a show REALLY based on reality, the reality of cash. Without the show, there would BE no number 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 ....

I just want to quickly comment on the government regulating the number of children a family can have. In China in the large cities, most families are only allowed 1 child (unless they are considered to have extreme wealth). This has raised abortion statistics through the roof (it costs mere pennies), because if a family wants a boy and they are pregnant with a girl, they will get an abortion and try again.

The Duggar family is a very respectful and respectable family. I am speaking from personal knowledge of being around them and maintaining a friendship with them. Their children are very intelligent with high academics scores for when they go to college, and they all work TOGETHER! They are not awkward in social settings and are simply amicable! Michelle's patience with all of her children is a breath of fresh air!

@Ashmo: So if she is constantly mothering and teaching ALL the children the way that she should, how does she have time for sex to keep popping out all these kids? Something doesn't quite add up. Either nannies are taking care of the kids, or the older siblings are.

I really dont think not one of the girls will go to college they will just be baby makers like their mom...brain washed to reproduce and clean after men
      • crazydaydream99 6 months ago
The girls aren't supposed to go to college.

I say to each his (or her) own. Live and let live. If I had even 2 kids I'd happily put my head in an oven...but if this family can take it, more power to them.

Another note: My mother was the 6th child out of 10. The older children did help with the younger while my g'mother did the cooking, cleaning, laundry (in the yard in a tub over a fire), gardening, canning, sewing, and selling eggs. I can say without any hesitation that my mother and her siblings loved each other more than any siblings I have seen. They were very close. Only two are now living and they mourn for the others. It does not hurt older children to help out. Could even be a very good birth control method for them. Work never hurt a kid, as long as it was not with dangerous equipment (and I don't mean lawn mowers or leaf blowers.)

What I've seen when skipping thru the channels is the kids doing all the work. Older ones raising younger ones and older ones doing all the cooking, cleaning, etc. Just my opinion.

I can see your point Tom, but at the same time it's good to see kids sharing in the responsibilities instead of just sitting around playing the x-box all day, expecting their parents to do everything for them. Too many kids are spoiled and protest against anything they don't want to do. The Jersey Shore generation bums me out. But the Duggar kids seem genuinely happy to me. Just a thought. :)

am actually happy for her, she has the biggest heart to love 20 kids, and her love is infinite and she can make more, and to see that her kids love her back is a great deal. The Duggar's are a family they help each other out when they need each other...and i love that about them.
    • aa  •  6 months ago
take it easy people, methinks thou complains too much.lol im not sure how those children are coping but shes certainly NOT Casey Anthony.and thats something to be thankful for.
    • jaz  •  6 months ago
I am happy for them, however I worry about the health of these children. Babies born to mothers her age tend to have issues... as did her last child. I just pray for a healthy Mrs. Dugger and baby girl or boy.

PS: Jasmin is a great name ;)

Oh wow Michelle, if there truly is room for one more, why not adopt a kid who needs said room instead of putting yourself and that baby at risk of death?
Right now I just hope that everything goes well with her and I wish her a good luck.
      • mich 6 months ago
there wouldnt be kids up for adoption if there were more women like Michelle, she loves and cherishes each and every child she has....adoptable kids are hard to obtain as infants and older children are often troubled beyond help, why would a person want that? ...by the way, I was an adopted child and I don't think you have a clue the #$%$ we go through
      • cass 6 months ago
so being a previously adopted child your opinion is that unless a child can be adopted as an infant they shouldn't be adopted at all because it's too much of a hassle?

My question is: if she continues to have periods, she'll continue to get pregnant. Wonder what age she will be done with menopause?

In response to the "kids raising kids is not parenting" business...have any of these people ever experienced living in a large family? They only work BECAUSE everyone helps out. As the oldest of 9, of course I helped take care of my siblings. No one mom can manage that all by herself, and it's not "unfair to the older kids" to expect them to help. That's how family WORKS.
    • C  •  6 months ago
      This is the Duggar's business.
    • taylor  •  6 months ago
If it's their religion, it's their religion. They had all of those kids before TLC so I don't think money has anything to do with it. And for all of those people who talk about the world population, the majority of that growth is happening in India and Africa. At least all of those Duggar kids can pay for the baby boomers' Social Security.

I think it's fantastic news! They are a financially stable couple who have a desire to care for and raise children. Their morals dictate that they don't believe in preventing any gifts that the lord should give them and that's their right. It wasn't until this last century that birth control was even available, my great grandmother was the youngest of 18. She and all of her siblings would get together every chance they could. Once it was only she and her one sister they were in the same nursing home together, best friends. With such a large family the siblings become very close because they do help to care for each other, but really is that any different than a typical family that is smaller? My father was widowed when I was in jr high and I helped to raise my younger sister because he had to work to support us. It's not unfair to the older children, it's family. It's love. A large family teaches selflessness and compassion. This is a beautiful Family.
