Five things you should never buy as a Mother's Day gift

While we're on the topic of the worst Mother's Day gifts you've ever received, let's talk Mother's Day gifts that should be strictly off limits.

    A definite no.A definite no.

Kitchen appliances. Not the gift of choice for Mother's Day. No bread makers. No Cuisinarts or blenders. Even for kitchenistas. Even in cool retro colors, don't do it. Especially when you're replacing something that's broken -- that doesn't even count as a gift.

Exception: A coffee maker. Mama needs her caffeine.

What, you think I smell? What, you think I smell?

Lotions. Yes, we know you think it's sweet to buy us lotions because women like to doll up and smell purdy with soft, luscious glowing skin. But what we think when we open this gift is, "I know I don't shower every day, but are you trying to tell me something?"

Exception: A slightly overpriced but exquisite lotion that a mom only purchases on special occasions.

    Not. Hawt.Not. Hawt.

Little House on the Prairie-inspired pajamas. Caroline Ingalls is the only mom who ever will make them look sexy.

    Exception: Grandma.

I will never. clean. again.I will never. clean. again.

    House-cleaning gear
. Even moms will admit the Dyson DC07 vacuum is one hot little number. But for a $600 price tag, we'd rather have the cash. We're in a recession, people. Drop that money into a savings account.

Exception: Mom asks for it. And even then, we're not even sure it's cool.

The Man Cold. Oh I know. You can't buy a cold. But you know what I'm talking about. The only thing worse than a kid being sick on Mother's Day is a husband/partner being sick on Mother's Day. You and your man colds. Mom should high-tail it 'outta dodge. But she won't. Because she's Mom.

    Exception: Never.

Actually, the "man cold" is the equivalent of a "woman headache" ;-).

Charlene, who did you ask the Queen of England? These are great gifts, who are your sources? I would love a new mixer, lotion, gift cards, remember it's the thought that counts. Get back to reality.

All I need for mothers day is a day off to be with my family!! It's my first year celebrating and jeez I can't wait to see what my husbend has in store for me! But I think a big hug thanking me will be enough and a biggo smile from my baby girl (7 weeks)..but like I said it's my first year!

I'd love a Dyson! At least it will be used and not sit on a shelf gathering dust...

Putting money in your savings account is NOT going to help you- or anyone else- during a recession. Research it some time. Buying the vacuum will put money in the economy, and money to the economy is like spinach to Popeye. You have a patriotic duty. So what are you waiting for?

why is this article focused on your spouse rather than your mother, after all your wife is not your mother and for many couples probably is not even a mother

I don't know who the clueless people are who write these lists. Mother's Day is not about getting expensive gifts. The whole holiday, along with Valentine's Day, has turned into an excuse to get into more debt for millions of American families. Maybe I'm lucky because my husband helps around the house and takes care of the children and tells me every day he appreciates what I do. He doesn't need a Hallmark holiday to go out and buy a cheap pair of $500 earrings to say "thank you." And in return I am appreciative of any gift my family gives me-- including a Dyson (which I have received as a gift and my husband uses it too) and a big red Kitchen Aid Mixer (I am not bitter about using it to make cookies for my kids). And I love lotions too.

From the perspective of a son who is very close to his mother, I would say that aside from a cold, any mom would appreciate any of these gifts and the thought behind them...but then again, my mom is probably 100 times cooler than the lady who wrote this article. Happy Mother's Day mom, and to all the other moms who disagree with this lady.

I personally think that this article is incorrect. Some mothers do appreciate these things - especially applicants.. and what's wrong with lotion? I don't see anything wrong with it.

it's a fake holiday. people shouldn't expect anything, never mind be ungrateful of what they do get.

When I was 16 and working my first job, I asked my mom what she wanted for Mother's Day. Her response was, "Something I can use." I bought her a vacuum cleaner and she couldn't have been happier.

      Crud!

    • Laura  •  3 years 9 months ago
This list is just silly, that mixer is awesome and that vacuum is super expensive. That would be an awesome gift, and if you think a coffee maker would be better than a super nice mixer that's just dumb. You can get a coffee maker for like $10. Please avoid taking advice from this article with the exception of cheap lotion, don't but that.
