How fertile are you? AMH: The ultimate fertility test for women

by Tammy (Contributor to The Greene Guide)

The best thing about working in a fertility office is learning fascinating facts about the female reproductive system. Ironically it is also the worst thing about working in a fertility office.

Growing up with the Chicken Little mentality, I tend to hyper-worry and over-analyze. When I first started wearing glasses for nearsightedness in third grade, I fretted over whether I was slowly becoming blind. When I was in sixth grade, I agonized over whether a menstrual period was a sign that I would eventually bleed to death. During my senior year in high school, I lost sleep for a semester worrying about finding a date to the prom. College was when I finally learned to rationalize my irrational fears.

But after learning about the intrinsic complexities of the female reproductive system, I felt my approach to rationalize irrational fears begin to crumble. Luckily, before my irrational fears about infertility drove me to premature aging, I learned that there are effective tools to help women assess their ovarian reserve (commonly referred to as a "woman's biological clock").

More specifically, your ovarian reserve approximates the number of fertile eggs that remain in your ovaries. The best assessment of your ovarian reserve can be determined by a simple blood test called Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH). You can find more information regarding AMH testing by checking out Dr. Robert Greene's newest article here: " AMH: an accurate, reproducible test for ovarian reserve."

Hormone balance through a healthy lifestyle, knowing what your ovarian reserve is, and other methods of treatment are all available to help you overcome infertility or fear of infertility.
