Is the Sir Mix-a-Lot Burger King commercial too much for kids?

Burger King is selling kids' meals with a SpongeBob related remix of Sir Mix-a-Lot's "Baby Got Back." In the latest commercial from their bizarre ad campaign, the King sings about his love for square butts, and his desire to "get with" SpongeBob while ladies shake their booties.

Here's the kicker: the ad was made in partnership with the children's television station, Nickelodeon.

Susan Linn, the director of the Campaign for Commercial-Free Childhood said: "It's bad enough when companies use a beloved media character like SpongeBob to promote junk food to children, but it's utterly reprehensible when that character simultaneously promotes objectified, sexualized images of women."

Update: The Campaign for Commercial Free-Childhood has launched a letter-writing campaign against the ad, encouraging parents to ask Burger King and Nickelodeon to pull the ad. Both companies say the ad is targeted at adults. Seriously?

After seeing the original "Baby Got Back" video nearly 100 times in our lifetimes and now viewing it as more campy than objectifying, we were a little numb and then confused upon first hearing the jingle. Square butts? This is insane! What are they talking about?! But bringing SpongeBob into the ad definitely makes it appear that it's trying to get then attention of kids.

Take a look at the BK ad, and tell us: Would you want your kids seeing this commercial?

This is a very creeping marketing effort directed at children. It is sexual in nature and certainly objectifies women. Young kids are smart and would definitely pick up on it. Parents, on the other hand, may be a little denser.

Yes it's a funny commercial until you see who the target audience is. All the sexual suggestiveness does not belong hawking kids meals.

And a lot of these so called parents commenting on these pages like the commercial is family bonding time have the moral turpitude of a slug. I'll bet you have the most down to earth, well adjusted family in the trailer park.

Congratulations Burger King for doing your part in pushing morality a little further into the gutter for that all mighty corporate dollar.

I don't see anything wrong with it for adults, but I wouldn't want my kid to watch it. I think this is part of what is wrong with kids anymore. They watch these commercials with girls shaking they're butts right in front of them. They grow up thinking that it's normal. They think that any girl who isn't willing to degrade themselves like this isn't worth their time.

For all those parents that have something againstthis commercial get a grip. Also get rid of your Shrek DVD too if you own a copy. have you forgotten that donkey sings the original song on part of the dvd? And you might as well not let your kids watch Nickelodeon anymore, they have jokes about butts every now and then. SPongebob has shown his a bunch of times. Its not like they are doing any thing sexual with it. ITs a butt everyone has one. THe butts in the commercial were square too . in real life people dont have square butts.
This is just like the Janet Jackson thing. everyone getting into an uproar about something not that big. I lived overseasmost of my life in a military family. On tv over there nudity isnt a big thing . They dont make it look like a bad thing. Here in the states you get all the bible thumpin morons in an uproar saying its a sin. If your kid asks a bout a body part just tell them the truth , then it wont seem like such a big idea to them. When the Janet Jackson thing happened my 5 year old daughter asked why she did that. I told her that Janet probably has an album coming out and wanted more publicity for it. My daughter then went oh ok can I watch cartoons now?
When you try to keep things from people it just makes them want it more. Think aboutwhen youre a kid at Christmas. You could see presents for you but couldnt open them yet ,didnt a lot of us try to sneak peeks at what we were getting? IF you tell your kids stay out of the cookie jar doesnt that make them want those cookies even more. When someone is trying to ban a book ,movie ,music ,etc, Doesnt that make you want to find out about that thing even more. Remember when Dan quayle attacked Ice -Ts metal band Bodycount for the Copkiller song and said how bad it was. That album started flying off the shelves when the week before Quayle spoke up it was on its way out of the charts. But he said it was bad and everyone ran out and got a copy.
SO what Im tryingto say is dont make big deals about goofy little cartoons. Remember its a cartoon sponge and people with big fake square butts. Just realize that this is not going to damage your chld for life. Also in closing theres a lot worse stuff they could be seeing on TV. Why not one of these nights let em sit down with you and watch the news and explain some of that stuff to them. The square butts wont seem like such a problem after that.

OMG now this was funny...not exactly kid friendly but funny. I have to admit that the original song is a giulty pleasure...it makes me laugh every time I hear it. Maybe the dancing girls would be OK if he didn't measure the other girl's butt. It's really funny but at the same time just really a strange commercial!

The commercial is fine to me, My family gets a kick out of it, and my son thinks it's funny that they have square booties. Some loser was bored and thought they would try and get something going about this commercial, if your child is watching spongebob then this is nothing. I don't think the writers are going for kids anymore.

You better believe BK anticipated this controversy and loves the attention. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain by having people talk, and inevitably laugh, about 'square butts'.

Kids find butts funny - that's just the way it is. They are too young to see it as a sexual thing, so they find it hilarious.

All the shrill PC people should be recieving their thank you cards from BK soon, because they are helping them attain the very needed product recognition they created the commercial to attain.

First time I saw it, i thought it was kinda funny, because I love Sir-Mix-a-Lot. But I kept seeing it, and then I realized how this could be construed as inappropriate. I still think its funny, but in an awkward way, if that makes any sense.

that commercial is hilarious for people who've heard the original song and saw the original video, but for kids who just understand spongebob is in the commercial and only see the sexualized images? it's a little innappropriate as they wouldn't know the reference for the video.

It might be too much for the kids, but I though it was great. Now I need to find my copy of the original song!

      READ THIS AND WEEP

Qestion: I am shaped like SpongeBob, meaning I don't have a waist. My stomach area is very flabby, and my back has fat rolls that look awful in clothing. I wear a sweater or jacket all year long to hide them. What is the best exercise for this?

A: Well, there's not just one best exercise that can help you whittle that spongy middle. Any activity that burns calories can aid weight loss, notes Karyn Gallivan, a personal trainer in Nashville, Tenn., and a spokesperson for the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

"The best thing to do is to begin and maintain a consistent training program, including a lot of cardio," she says. "The secret is to create and maintain a caloric deficit, either by more time exercising or by eating fewer calories, or better yet both."

It sounds like you're not a regular exerciser, so start gently. Kathy Kaehler, a Los Angeles personal trainer and author of the new book "Fit and Sexy for Life," suggests embracing your inner SpongeBob — and taking to the water.

"Get into swimming for your workout," she says. "This is a great cardio workout for burning fat." Aim to hit the pool for 20 minutes a couple of times a week.

Kaehler also recommends adding a walking program to your routine. Start with one mile three times a week and try to work up to three miles per session by summer.

In addition to fat-burning exercises to lose weight, you'll want to be sure to do abdominal exercises such as crunches at least a few times a week to tighten and tone.

"Abdominal fat responds really well to exercise," says Gallivan. "So if you train hard enough, and consistently enough, you'll see results."

Keep in mind that genetics plays a role in how we're shaped and where fat likes to take up residence. So even if you never achieve the perfect proportions of Wonder Woman or Superman (and few of us ever do), you can slim down and firm up if you stay committed to a good exercise and eating plan.

You know, when I saw this post-I ran straight to it because I thought for sure in some way, we'd have some adult(s) saying, FINALLY! Yes, this is too much-for children. But, I see that now, there are no more TRUE adults in the sense that we want to protect our children, don't want them to grow up too fast, want our children to stay children for as long as they can and everything they show or sell is not entertaining and meant to be worshipped.

I saw this ad for the first time, I believe, on Sunday. I looked at my fiancee and we shook our heads. I said, this is ridiculous, this is not for children. For those of you, who believe children don't know, you're dumber than I thought. When do we say enough is enough. The powers that be read these comments and when they see everyone is happy and thinks the ad is soooooo hilarious, they will take their chances and go a little further. We have no morals and/or common sense any more. I can only assume that the parents (and I use the term loosely) are young. Gotta be. And that's one reason why this world is going to hell in a handbasket. Parent and child, sitting there laughing at that stupid commercial. I wonder if it would be so funny if it was your child up there. And trust, I'm not an old fogey...I listen to Hip Hop (well, old school-the REAL Hip Hop) and I do remember this song...remember where I was when I first heard it....but somethings are just not appropriate and it's ok to say so. We've got to do better people.

I think that if you let your children watch SPONGEBOB, then, yes, it's ok. Personally, I LOVE THIS COMMERCIAL!!!! So does my 5 year old. She thinks it's hilarious. Of course, children these days are too young to know the original song to correlate the two together. I think it's fine.
People need to ease up. Burger King is fine in moderation and I don't think young children are going to be saying "DAMN MOM! SHE'S HOT!" It's a commercial. Get over it.

LMAO!! That is halarious, and my 6 yr old son would just die laughing!! OMG that is great! I luv BK!

My boys and I laughed our round butts off! And not one of them mentioned anything about the ladies at all, except for "Look, Mom! They all have square butts!" Harmless, I think. Besides, my kids don't even like Burger King.
