Itty bitty bites: Colorful rainbow cake will blow your kids away

photo credit: omnomicon.comphoto credit: omnomicon.comThere's nothing like a pretty cake to make your kid smile, especially when it's made on a random day...just for kicks.

I've filed this rainbow cake under the category of "Must Try Immediately" because it's simply too cool (just like the Hello Kitty cake pops. Side note: I did make these with a twist, but it didn't go as planned. Attempt number two will be documented.)

Now, it would be fun to surprise your kids with this cake. But it would be almost as much fun to have them help you make it. Need convincing? Look at the pretty pictures! I know, oh, I know, it has crazy amounts of food coloring. But I'm willing to run with it because of its sheer awesomeness. [via Craftzine]

(Also, since I'm clearly having an "unhealthy food" moment, look at this Root Beer Cookies. Yum!)

oh rare b, really????? do you also put blinders on your kids before you take them into toys r us?please, allow your kids to be just that, kids. nobody intends for that rainbow cake to be breakfast for the kids every day before school. get a grip, did you ever hear of "treats"? according to your posted comment, it sounds like treats are a foreign topic for you. i hope that your kids actually have friends that will come to their birthday parties for broccoli pie, or tofu cupcakes(you know, like tofurkey(tastes like the real thing) )that you create in your little lab - kitchen. buy some flour, sugar, butter and eggs, and make your kids a cake, for petes sake.

a friend made this cake for me for my 20th birthday and it looked just as pictured and tasted even better. it was labled as a "diet cake" made with only diet 7up and the box cake mix and food coloring... a little sweeter than normal but a gorgeous cake.. def. somethin to try :D

It's great that ideas for cakes have come such a long way from Grandma's time.
Some of us still like a simple cake, but I can relate to the need for hip food styles.

Suggestion: Could someone (in addition to myself) figure out another way
to express total amazement? "Blowing your kids away...." 'It will blow you away'....
these expressions really offend me. We can do better.

Wow Rareb lighten up! Kids need to be kids, a little bit of cake with food coloring never killed a child has it?..... This will be the inside of my daughters birthday cake as a surprise. I do agree that natural food colors might be a better choice but not because regular food color is poison!

:) I hear it tastes normal, even with all the colors. But I guess I'll have to test it out to believe it!

Wow.....what a "technicolor treat"! Looks great, but not sure I could actually eat it though....lol.....

I love it. I will have to try it. It's funny how people will always have something bad to say about anything and everything, even a cake!
    • Kharamell  •  3 years 2 months ago
I hope it tastes good. Technicolor, that's funny! How do you get all of those colors together like that anyway? I don't even have the patience to attempt it with jello

Are you people serious? Is the health condition in this country not evidence enough to make you folks understand how important it is to teach your kids healthy eating habits? one thing, it is cake, fine! nice treat, but the COLOURING in there is enough to make anyone's liver, kidney, and all other body organs just stop functioning!!!! stop feeding your kids crap!!!!! it is nowhere near good for their bodies!! unless you use natural colouring but all I see as a mom is POISON!! JEEZ!!!!

Fantastic- it looks like a Grateful Dead t-shirt. And I am quite sure that your kids are not fed a constant diet of technicolour cake. I've raised six of the little monsters (as a single mom) and they all came out pretty darn well, if I say so myself. In spite of occasional fixes of fried food and that fake orange cheese stuff.

That looks really fun!! My kids will love eatingthat and helping me make it.

In reference to the comments to and from rare b, I agree with Charlene. 90% of the time, my kids are eating fresh fruit, yogurt with fresh fruit, nuts, ect healthy stuff. Every once in a while, they deserve to eat fun stuff. A little every once in a while won't harm them.

Ohhh! Shawna -- Brilliant with the Easter idea! Didn't even think of that!
    • Shawna P  •  3 years 2 months ago
That is a cool looking cake. I am going to have to try to make that. I may use easter colors and make it in the shape of a bunny.
