While all new mamas are certainly entitled to a postbirth glass of vino, it's good to know that the "pump and dump" method doesn't mean breast pumping after drinking alcohol entirely removes it from your body. Alcohol leaves your breast milk just as it leaves your bloodstream - with time.

In most cases, pumping and dumping doesn't remove the "bad" milk. Pumping will maintain your supply and prevent engorgement while you wait for the bad stuff to leave your body.

Even though the exact time varies, on average, alcohol levels in breast milk peak at around 30 to 60 minutes after you've had a drink and drop steadily from there.

So when is it okay to pump and dump? One scenario is you're away from your baby for awhile and have no other way to comfortably carry your milk along. Or, if there's a substance in your milk that is harmful to baby - like alcohol or other drugs.
