Kids in PJs in Public?

Suri Cruise
Suri Cruise

Little Suri Cruise turns six-years-old this week, and mom Katie Holmes celebrated by taking the tot out to dinner. This wouldn't be remarkable except that the famously well-dressed tyke was wearing her PJs. When I saw the pics of Katie following Suri in her jammies and holding her blankey, I really wanted to give her a mom-to-mom fist bump. Stars - sometimes they really are just like us! (And sometimes they're not. Suri was flown into New York for the celebration on her own private helicopter.)

I cannot even tell you how many times my kids have gone to the store, a restaurant, and even to school still wearing what they slept in the night before. When my kids were toddlers, it was kind of adorable. What's cuter than a toddler in footie pajamas (even if it is 3 p.m. on a Tuesday)? (Although it must be noted that those jammies are terribly not functional for little walkers as the soles are so slippery-even the ones with texture on the bottoms.) And while this is less noticeable now that my kids are older and sleep in basketball shorts and tees, they are still loathe getting dressed if they don't have to. Considering I wear my "gym" clothes more frequently outside of the gym than I do in, I understand. Plus, some fights just aren't worth having, and clothing often falls in that category at our house.

There is also the argument that our society is becoming too casual. When I was a college professor, I used to get annoyed when my students wandered into class bleary-eyed and clad in their ratty sweats and fuzzy slippers...for my afternoon classes. Church is another venue where I refuse to let my kids wear their PJs. Playdates are also a PJ-free zone, but that's mostly because I don't want the other mom to judge me for being lazy.

What's your stance on jammies outside of the bedroom? At what age does it become inappropriate to let kids wear their pajamas everywhere?

What's your stance on jammies outside of the bedroom? I think most of us can agree that tots in PJs are cute, but at what age does it become inappropriate to let kids wear their pajamas everywhere?
