'Mom Crushes': Cute or Over the Top?

When I was tween, in the early 1980s, my mother was still crushing on her old 1960s favorites--Frankie Valley, The Beach Boys--idols of days long gone by. And while I rolled my eyes quite often at these "ancient" obsessions, in hindsight, I'm pretty glad I never caught her walking around in a Simon Le Bon t-shirt or giggling over Corey Feldman in Teen Beat.
But times have changed. And these days it's just as likely for moms to be crushing over a young celeb they could have literally given birth to--than a star their own age.
One only has to watch the Twilight Tent City video, pulled from TwilightMoms.com to see what I mean.
There appeared to be more excited, middle-aged women camping out on the streets of Los Angeles for the premiere than actual teens. And this isn't first time, either. The self-proclaimed "Twi-Moms" got called out at Comic Con last year in a line-cutting controversy with teens there to see the actors. The moms said they had just as much right to be there as anyone. The teens called it creepy.

And yes, at least Robert Pattinson, who plays the brooding vampire Edward in the films, is of age at 24 years old. But what about Taylor Lautner, the werewolf Jacob? When New Moon came out, he was just seventeen. But women in their forties were wolf whistling their heads off when he took off his shirt. I have to wonder--would this be still be socially acceptable if Lautner were a girl and the audience was full of men?
And let's not even get into sixteen year old Justin Bieber...
So as the Eclipse premiere looms, the question remains. Is it appropriate for grown women to morph into drooling fan girls over stars half their age? Is it just innocent fun? A way to stay young? Better relate to your daughter? Or should these fangirl moms just grow up and leave the teen crushes to real teens?
