Most hated baby names: Is your kid's on the list?

If you already have your heart set on a name for your baby, you may want to stop reading now. If you couldn't care less what anyone else thinks and won't break into tears at the sight of seeing your future child's name on the 10 Most Hated Baby Name list, then proceed. I warn you, however, that it can be brutal to see one's choice sitting there after all the painstaking debate and devotion that go into choosing just the right name.

More from The Stir: 20 Names I Would Never Give my Baby

The list comes from Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby. She conducted an "informal" study and came up with the list. In general she found people hate "gender-bending" names in which a masculine name becomes feminine -- like Addison or Madison.

As well, people despise trendy names ... though obviously not everyone does or they wouldn't be trendy, right? Also on the list of hate are names that are difficult to spell (Kaitlyn) and those that are similar versions of other names (Jayden, Brayden, and Kayden).

Here's the full list (with notes from Live Science) ... brace yourself:

    Girls

    1. Nevaeh ("heaven" spelled backward and one of the most divisive names around, according to Wattenberg)
    2. Destiny (people dislike names that confer a virtue onto a child, Wattenberg said -- and many associated this name with exotic dancers)
    3. Madison
    4. Mackenzie
    5. McKenna
    6. Addison (an example of a masculine named turned feminine, which many people dislike, Wattenberg said)
    7. Gertrude (people said this name is "ugly")
    8. Kaitlyn (for its "made-up" spelling)
    9. Makayla
    10. Bertha (author's note: duh!)

More from The Stir: Baby Name Leads to Death Threats

    Boys

    1. Jayden
    2. Brayden
    3. Aiden
    4. Kaden (these rhyming names struck many as overdone, Wattenberg reported)
    5. Hunter (too much like a last name or "too violent")
    6. Hayden
    7. Bentley (people dislike brand-name names, Wattenberg found, calling them "trashy")
    8. Tristan
    9. Michael (too boring, according to some)
    10. Jackson

I'm surprised to see some of them there -- especially Michael, and Kaitlyn doesn't seem that strangely spelled to me. But some of them, yeah ... "Bentley," really?

Still, if you love a name, it's your baby, and you get to decide. Don't let the haters color your opinion of a name you love ... just know that your child may be among those who hate it too.

What do you think of the baby names on this most hated list? Are your children's names on it? Do you care?

The Aiden, Brayden, Caden craze drove me nuts! It was cute the first time or two I heard it....but now I know 2 Braydens, 3 Cadens, and about a hanful of Aidens. I feel like the best way to go about unique names is to look into names from other countries that you don't normaly hear.... Elodie is a French name, beautiful for a girl!
      • Isabel 2 days 17 hours ago
I really love Elodie actually - is the stress on the dee or the oh...as in ElOHdie or EloDIE...

I agree, I'm sick of Caden and Caleb!! UGH...and Neveah is ridiculous.
      • Sue 1 day 14 hours ago
Trendy names are so trashy. Neveah might be the most ridiculous name of all time. Stupid. Basically it's the exact opposite of heaven which I'm pretty sure is hell.

I have a niece named Heather and an nephew named Jason, but both are in their 50s so the names were not as common then.

Emilie Bell and Zoey Gabrielle. It was going to be Emilie Rose(Rose after a family member) but that horror movie came out at the time I was picking names and when I was telling every body they started laughing at me.

Naming my daughter (in the semi-distant future of 5-6yrs) Natalie Elise. I have only
Met one Natalie and one Elise. I've been in love with this Natalie for upwards of 8 years (and I'm only 20). My name is Eryn and I've only met one girl with the same spelling and not until I reached college. There was a guy in my high school named Aaron, but we were the only two.I get complements all the time. I love my name. (my middle name is Elizabeth which is pretty common but flows well with Eryn). The other girl name I love is Caroline. For boys I like Nathan Anthony and Christopher Anthony (Anthony is after a deceased relative).

      Thoughts?

Our daughters middle name had originally been planned as Haevyn, kinda glad we decided not to go with that lol. Her name is Faolyn (Fay - oh - lin) as I was always rather resentful of having such an overused name though I do appreciate my name's roots (8 Erin/Aaron total at my school growing up). The name we picked was originally Faolan which is the masculine so we changed the second 'a' to an 'e' to make it feminine BUT my mother in law said she didn't like the name 'olen' being in her name so when they swapped the 'e' to a 'y' to get her to shut up lol
      • Dr. Awesome 9 days ago
Faolyn is pretty. Is it Gaelic?

Haevyn, honestly, is just awful. At least as a middle name, it could be hidden away. If I met a kid with that for a first name, I'd be fighting an urge to slap both her parents.
      • Dan 8 days ago
Sounds a bit too much like Failin / Failing
      • Dr. Awesome 6 days ago
Oh wow. If she were in middle school right now, they'd be calling her "Epic Faolyn."

25 years later our youngest daughter still hates her name..only because no one ever pronounces it correctly. Its Moira. MOI (rhymes with boy) RA... but is proud of its uniqueness and who it Honor's and meaning...cant wait to see what handle she and her hubby give to their own kids..
    • Caitlin  •  Tampa, Florida  •  1 day 17 hours ago
I can't stand people who misspell Caitlin. There is a reason it's that way. It's Irish/Gaelic and means Pure. All the other ways are just silly.

My wife's criteria was that our son's name had to be unique because her name is very common. In my family all boys names starts with the letter R. So we looked at baby name web sites and I found Raiden. It is the Japanese god of Thunder. Rai = Thunder, Den = Lightning. and it's unique. It happens to kinda combine my first name with my wife's Ray + Diana. By coincidence it is also the name of the character from the Mortal Kombat games. We dressed him up as Raiden from Mortal Kombat for his 2nd halloween. There are a few Raidens out there.
Little did we know there's an "Aiden" craze going on right now. At the playground we hear parents calling for their kids all the time.. "Jayden", "Aiden".. etc. So technically his name isn't on the list because it starts with an R and it's definitely unique, so I'm partially relieved.

As someone with an uncommon name, I was constantly, as a child and continue to as an adult, having to correct folks when they either say it or spell it, although it is easily phonetic when written. As an adult, to retain some degree of anonymity online, I utilize my initials. As a child, I resented my mother for giving me a name that required no last name for people who I was. And, what I hated the most was not being able to find anything personalized, with everything having to be custom ordered. Perhaps, though, it is because of this that I became a wordsmith. I CRINGE when I read some of the monikers folks stick on their children, yet if it has meaning or significance in some way to them, so be it.
One of the most absurd things I see is the prefix "Mc-" on a girl's name: McKenna, McKayla, McKenzie. "Mc-" means "the son of", and the proper spellings for these otherwise lovely names are Makenna, Michaela, and Mackenzie. Recently, American Girl introduced a story character whose name is McKenna. The editor needs to fire whoever came up with that spelling.

Haha i know two girls names Porscha and Mercedes. Sisters.
    • Hayley  •  20 days ago
I was the only one my entire school system named Hayley (there were 3 Kayleys of various spellings), all 12 years and even my 2 years of college. Now it seems almost every little girl has that name. My only consolation is that I rarely see it spelled my way.
    • laethyn  •  25 days ago
It always amuses me when people pronounce my name "Sean" as "Seen". Never really gave it much thought, but I like my name.
    • Doug  •  6 days ago
Yep! I agree with Bentley sounding trashy... funny how you can't say it without a deep southern accent.. (after watching Teen Mom anyway LOL!) In my opinion "M" names are getting way over used.. I can't keep track of all the different spellings and pronunciations, (ie) Madison, Madeline, Marilyn, Melinda, Miranda, etc...
And there are just some names that are not for a GROWN man like, Joshua, Tyler, Tristan, pretty much any name ending in "tan".
And seriously... MAXWELL for a girl!! Come on.. I thought Jessica Simpson was stupid before.. but now there is no hope for her. What did her sister name her kid... Mogely.. really?

My 4 year old girl is named Alyssa (Ah-Liss-Ah) Erin. I love her name as does her father and the rest of the family too.
    • Jenny  •  Fargo, North Dakota  •  7 hours ago
I understand most of the names chosen on both lists, however I think there are a couple others that should be added. I think the name Trey for a boy is very trashy. I will say my sons name is on the list.... Kaden.
