National Geographic Worthy Photos, Taken by Kids

Makayla Hayes, 14, won the international grand prize in the 2011 National Geographic Kids photo contest for this cool under-water shot.Makayla Hayes, 14, won the international grand prize in the 2011 National Geographic Kids photo contest for this …Kids have an interesting perspective on just about everything, and when you hand a kid a camera you can get a glimpse into her world. This year's winners in the Fifth Annual National Geographic Kids International Photo Contest captured humorous quips, quirky sights, and poignant moments that may be impossible to see without a view finder.

Judges sifted through more than 12,000 images submitted by kids in the United States and Canada, Bulgaria, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Lithuania, Slovenia, South Africa, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Winners were chosen from each region, but the international grand prize went to 14-year-old Makayla Hayes of Marion, Illinois, for her eerie underwater self-portrait.

We've pulled together a slideshow (above) of the top shots from this year's contest; you can check out the 2010 winners and 2009 winners at National Geographic Kids.

I teach photo classes to kids (7 to 11) and they always surprise me. Kids are not told that they CAN'T do something so they're more likely to take risks. I use their examples when teaching adults.

They shouldn't have told us kids did this until the end. Some of them rival adult professionals.

They're so much better than me, it's almost unfair. Really great photos! Good to see that kids are doing something else asides from being attached to their iPhones and PS3s.

Or perhaps their interest in taking photos stemmed from their iphone cameras.

Only 11 pictures shown out of 1200,...I would like to see more. Enjoyed the reflection in the dog's eye (beautiful), and the hedgehog is 'cute'. Give us more.
How about a site just for 'kids amazing photos'.
I'd enjoy them more then the rest of the information on Yahoo.

Beautiful! Wish I had known this was going on when I picked up photography and before I became an adult. These children are very talented. The bubble portrait and the close up of one you girl's dog's eye, creating a reflective fish eye effect - those were brilliant! And then the couple on the ledge and the prize winner underwater photo, those are just lovely. Awesome job, kiddos!
