Parenting Guru: The 3 hardest words - I need help

Being a mom is seriously hard work. Anyone who disagrees is probably doing it wrong. We worry, we try, we succeed, we fail and we learn.

What I've learned most this year can be summed up in three little words. The hardest three words I have ever had to say:

I need help.

I do.

But why is it so hard to admit? Why do we pretend we don't? Why does asking for help feel like a personal failure?

Recognizing our limitations and reaching out for help makes us smarter than the average bear, never weaker.

I'm realizing now more than ever how much help I need from my husband, help that goes far beyond killing spiders. And it's not just spiders or help from my husband, I need help with everything from babysitting to parenting advice to a shoulder to cry on to a boost of confidence to an honest opinion if this dress makes me look fat.

Support begets support. Let us remember to look around and recognize those in need of your support. Maybe you have a friend or family member going through a hard time, maybe you've noticed a friend pull away recently. Let us also take the time to thank your biggest supporters and personal cheering section, those we can reach out to with those three little words any time of day or night.

John Donne wrote, "No man is an island". That's pretty true, but you know what's even truer? No mom is an island.

How are you about asking for help when you need it? Who are your biggest supporters?
