Parenting Poll: What's the going rate for the tooth fairy?

photo credit: purlbee.squarespace.comphoto credit: purlbee.squarespace.comMy oldest son is losing his teeth left and right. It's a big kid milestone and a big parenting milestone (mostly with Mom doing a lot of this: "Ohhhh, mah baaaay-beeee is growing up." Sigh. Look at baby pictures. Sigh again.)

I've been saving cute "tooth fairy" ideas for the past year, because I love all things crafty and cute, and I also am very into creating family traditions. The tooth fairy pouches to your left? So, so sweet. And very simple to make.

But as to what goes IN the tooth fairy pouch? That's questionable.

Our tooth fairy leaves coins. There's something magical about finding shiny change that the kids can jingle and hear "clink" when they drop their booty into their piggy bank.

How much? It has varied. The first tooth brought in two bucks. It was a big deal when my little guy pulled out that miniscule, sharp bead. The tooth fairy wanted to share the joy. (Um, "ohhhh, mah baaaay-beee.").

Plus, this particular rookie tooth fairy was unclear on the going rate for teeth. Moving forward, the tooth fairy needs to reel it in.

How much does your tooth fairy leave for your kids?

God Loves Insanity- Do you refuse to lie about Santa and the Easter Bunny too?

That is not being a good parent! I choose to lie to my children about all of those characters because in this world a child sees and goes through enough and it is part of the magic of being a child.

We (hubby and I) still believe in the spirit of Santa, the new season of the Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy!

Your poor child with no magic in their lives. Sounds to me someone was either very mean to you when you were little or you are just cheap!

My kids get $5 for the first tooth (my son lost his first tooth at bedtime and the only cash I had was a five-dollar bill). After that, though, the tooth fairy gets chintzy and leaves only one dollar.

The tooth fairy usually leaves a doller per tooth at my house. Although, once the tooth fairy came a night late and left a $5 bill for making her wait.

My sister gave 20 to her kids (crazy I knew), the boy (6) said that he would start pulling his teeth to save for a WII game

I used to get 5 bucks max... My kid is only 2 so he is not losing any teeth yet... but when that time comes i think if it is just one tooth 10 bucks. But if it is 2 or 3... max is 15 bucks.. maybe 20 if he is good... lol

The first tooth in our house is a big deal - they usually get a $5 bill to spend as they want and then a few gold dollars. Each tooth after that gets 2 gold $$ coins to go in the piggy bank. The kids love the "special" gold dollars and don't want to spend them - and it makes the piggy bank balance go up considerably!

I always got $5 a tooth. There was one time that i got $10, because i got that tooth pulled out and my mom took pity on me. My sister used to try and convince my mom that the going rate was $3 so i wouldnt get as much money.

I always got 20 dollars. Granted, I was a spoiled only-child growing up.

I give my kiddos $5 a tooth. I asked the moms at the school what they were doing and they all said $5.
I thought that was a little steep, but I did not want my kiddos to be left out.

      Funny story though.....
Last year my oldest daughter lost a tooth. She put it under her pillow and I was to leave the $$$ before I left for work. The job I had then I left for work at 3:30am.
My hubby had given me 2-$50.00 bills to buy a new fish finder that was on sale at the fishing store. he gave me that money before I went to sleep.
I stumbled through the house at 3am and before I got in the shower I put the tooth fairy money under my daughter's pillow. About 730 I got a phone call from my hubby telling me that I had to fix this. That he wanted to get that fish finder and that I had to fix this. I had no idea what he was talking about until my daughter got on the phone and said that the tooth fairy left her $50.00!!! OMG!!!
I told hubby that he did not get to spoil this for her that I would figure it out. I talked to my mama and she told me that I could not take it back. That evening when my daughter got off the bus I told her that just maybe the tooth fairy made a mistake and that she needed to put the money back under her pillow. She found a note from the tooth fairy covered in pink fairy dust (glitter) that told her she could keep the money but she had to save it and could not spend it all in one place.

$5.00 per tooth not $50.00! LOL!!!

4 shiny quarters for my daughter under her pillow.
    • AC  •  2 years 10 months ago
When I was losing teeth, I was getting around $1.50 in quarters. Granted that was ten years ago, but I was happy with my quarters. I would think that a couple dollar coins would suffice.

My daughter lost her two front teeth at the same time. The 4th of July and she and another boy ran into each other causing her teeth to get jammed and a trip to the ER for them to be pulled. The tooth fairy felt so bad because her mouth was swollen and bruised by the entire thing. She got $12 total for both teeth. That was a one time deal, tooth fairy felt that pain and suffering should be included in that deal. Now it's $4.

we always got a couple bucks no more then maybe 2.50$, but i was known to lose teeth in pairs so we my parents would put the teeth together and add a little extra for the extra tooth

the 1st tooth was $2 & was a $2 bill, the remaining teeth have been around $1 each, but as the gold dollar coin, foreign coins, all pennies, fun things. & we always leave some glitter or sprinkles on the pillow & at the window sill! it's so fun for them to believe in the magic of the tooth fairy!
