Should we ban fast food near schools?

A new study in California shows a strong link between teen obesity and the proximity of fast food restaurants to schools.

According to an article in the LA Times, the presence of a fast food chain like McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut within walking distance of school (about 530 feet or less) resulted in a 5.2 percent increase in incidence of student obesity when compared with students attending schools not near restaurants.

OK, I know. Obesity can be caused by lots of things including genetics, lack of exercise, and nutrition, but some researchers believe that fast food proximity to schools is a contributing factor. I may have eaten Taco Bell from time to time back in the day. Those spots were a hangout because it was cheap, fast, and (as they say) close to the school.

But the rate of diabetes and heart disease among young people is growing, so this is serious. State and local governments in California (and across the country) have started to ban certain foods in schools including soda, junk food, trans fats, and even bake sales. Should they go ahead and ban the restaurants that serve this kind of stuff, too?

Some CafeMoms feel parents are the ones who should teach their kids good eating habits, so they would make the right choices.

Is it enough to teach nutrition at home and in schools? Should fast food be banned near schools? What do you think should be done?

im overweight and i had terrible eating habits as a child... if u could throw it in the microwave it was dinner. now i eat healthy and i make my kids eat healthy. my daughter is 8 and loves fruit and vegetables and she gets water all day as well as 1 cup of 100% juice. no milk cuz it gives her a bellyache. she gets the last couple swallows of soda MAYBE 3 times a year. No fastfood. if we do she gets apples instead of fries, juice instead of soda, and chicken nuggets instead of hamburger. and we NEVER eat @ mcDs. 1 hr of tv a day max. and evryday the weather isnt rain or snow we go for a walk or to the park to play. if she says 'im bored' i say 'go outside and play'. The only time she gets to play video games is on car rides that last longer than an hour and she only plays for about 15-20 mon. (her choice) HER WEIGHT IS PERFECT! it isnt that hard ppl

I can understand how it may help with obesity, however no. What current and younger generations need is knowledge about what to eat, how much to eat, and when to eat. They need more playgrounds closer to school. Everyone, especially kids, need to go play more and move!

No , I don't think we should ban fast food restaurants near schools. I think we should focus on teaching self control and positive healthy choices .

I know for a fact that fastfood is more expensive near schools. I don`t eat it myself, but have teens. A mile down the block or two is cheaper.

we should ban people who wear ties from being in, near, around or allowed to talk about schools. Apparently ties restrict proper blood flow to the brain thus causing irrational thought patterns and poor judgement resulting in a host of stupidity like this study; hundreds of useless regulations, programs that divide us into politically expedient "labels", keep our youth ignorant and citizens impoverished.

Thank you for supporting my slippery fongers, we should stop some of these congress persons who want to control us. We can make our own choices, that is why we are american persons,we have freedom of choice. The PTA of schools, should educate the parents about fast food. And for teens they will make the right choices. If your athlectic, you happen to eat fast food, it will slow them down, if they want to go to the olympics, they may rethink about what they are eating. That is what one of my granddaughters did.

The kids that eat free are in better health then the ones with money, just let all kids eat free, parents pay enough taxes , all children should eat free,

typical of the lunatic fringe protect you from yourself, take away the right to decide whats best for yourself take away the responsibility of freedom and replace it with the need of a big protector , banning crappy food in the government run school fine but once off school property i decide what i eat , wear ,my destination or who my assosiates are is my bussiness and something totally heretical in this day of the religion of we know better than you politics what my responsibilities i choose to take for my life

Fast food is not the problem...feeding it to your kids 3 times a day is the problem!
      • cinnamon5491 3 months ago
No. Parents should be controlling what their kids eat and hopefully, they actually prepare, cook, throw something together, whatever, but hopefully one meal a day is prepared at home by mom.

eating 3 times a day is not the problem unless you eat un-healthy. your body needs certain energy that's why people eat 3 times a day. Breakfast should be your biggest meal.. lunch should be your mid-meal.. dinner should be a light-meal.

i BELIVE THAT YOU SHOULD NOT BAN RESTURANT FOOD OUT SIDE THE CAMPUS. tEACHERS MAY WANT TO USE IT OR VISITORS MAY WANT A QUICK MEAL.
cHILDREN IF THEY EXERSISE IN RESSESS OR AT OTHER TIMES THERE WOULD NOT BE ANY FAT CHILDREN AROUND., AND GIVING THEM A CHOICE OF WHAT KIND OF PHYSICAL EXERSISE TO DO, WOULD BE HELPFUL. sKIPING ROPE WITH FUN SAYS WOULD HELP. LOVE DOING RESSES WITH MY FRIENDS AND MY SCHOOL, HELP MAKE IT FUN.
