Teacher Caught on Tape Bullying Student. Is a Camera a Kid's Only Advocate?

The New Jersey teacher caught on video belittling his student. The New Jersey teacher caught on video belittling his student.
Nobody believed Julio Artuz, a 15 year old New Jersey special education student, when he complained of being bullied by his teacher. So he caught the whole thing on tape. In footage captured in secret on his cellphone, Artuz is subjected to curses and berating from a man who's supposed to be a mentor.

Artuz's teacher says: "I will kick your [expletive] from here to kingdom come until I'm 80 years old."

    "Don't threaten me," responds Artuz.

"What are you going to do? You gonna get a chopper and chop me?" asks his teacher as the rest of the class sits rubbernecking the heated argument.

What Jules did do was show his taped account to his parents and a local advocate of bullied students. After an NBC news affiliate in Philadelphia got hold of the footage (you can watch it here), the school immediately took action, placing the teacher on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

"The actions depicted on the video do not reflect the mission or culture of our school," said Gloucester Counter Special Services Superintendent Michael Dicken in a statement. "Our school district takes all bullying, harassment, and intimidation allegations seriously...we do not tolerate it."

While schools may not tolerate that kind of abuse of power, it takes a lot to make it stop. In a separate incident earlier this week, an Ohio special needs student came forward with an account of long-term bullying from her two teachers. She actually had to attend school wired with a recording device to capture proof of her teachers calling her "dumb", "lazy" and overweight. Another shocking incident this month involved a high school basketball coach who was captured on cell phone video making deeply offensive, racist remarks about students while in school.

"Statistically about 1 to 2 percent of teachers are actually involved in bullying students," says Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist who runs the anti-bullying website RespectU. "There needs to be a clear policy in schools not just for students bullying other students but for teachers as well. Teachers are humans too and this kind of thing does happen, so it needs to be managed early."

While more schools have introduced anti-bullying codes of conduct for students, teachers aren't always considered a threat.

It's a murky issue for many school administrators. Where's the bullying line when you're managing an unruly classroom? "Its blurry sure but you know when someone wants to make a kid feel bad, or when they're abusing their power as an authority figure," says Dr. Haber. "That's not the way a role model should be managing a student. "

A bullying teacher doesn't just threaten to knock a student's self-confidence, he can destroy a kid's confidence in his school. "Teachers are supposed to make students feel safe," Dr. Haber says. When school becomes a fearful environment because of a teacher, students suddenly think 'well who can I trust then?'"

In Artuz' case, his phone was best bet. It's possible nobody would have listened if they didn't see it firsthand. "When you watch a video like that live, it really creates a different image than if you were to just hear about," says Dr. Haber.

It's a powerful defense, especially for students who don't feel their complaints would be recognized otherwise. It also sends a message to teachers: watch how you speak to your students, someone might be taping you.

Welcome to the public school system wherein the sports stars, the wealthy, the popular ones (often the same as the wealthy and/or sports stars) and the teachers are always telling the truth (in that order if there's a conflict). My friends and I have sworn not to allow our children into public school when and if we have them because of experiences like this one.

My parents did the same to me when I told them my ninth grade science teacher was lying about the things I was doing. "He's dangerous and violent." Funny thing was that I'd never been violent... EVER. "He was throwing furniture across the room." Odd that there was no collateral damage given that she was talking about heavy desks in a crowded classroom full of students!

The same thing happened in elementary school. I'd never shown any aggressive tendencies but there were these two or three smaller kids who would bully me to the point of fighting back. They'd say I started it and I'd get into trouble because they were smaller and there were more of them so they had to be right, right?

Wake up parents! These people CANNOT be trusted!

This is what happens when government is allowed to run amok with unlimited resources. Pretty soon, you get burecrats hiding behind other burecrats trying to protect a system that is lining their own pockets, while failing in the missions they are entrusted to execute. This situation is very similar to the autistic child who was bullied by his teachers in NJ. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that those same teachers were given some kind of recognition, and sent on the GSA's taxpayer funded vacation to Vegas as a reward.

To make matters worse, we now have a president who thinks throwing money at these problems is the solution, driving us more in debt. More money is clearly not the answer...a more streamlined system to which the taxpayers start holding people accountable is.

Schools are NOT spending unlimited funds. They are cutting the very administrators who would be watching for this kind of behavior due to a lack of funds. Taxpayers always wnat admoinistrators cut, but they are the defense against this kind of terror.
      • Just the Facts 29 days ago
Michael - From the sound of the above, the administrators are the ones protecting their own here. Only the teachers aide got fired... The other teacher got "reassigned" to another district. Much the same way the Vatican shifted priests to other diocese in an attempt to cover up their bad behavior. Just another example of typical government cronyism.

Nothing will ever change. The people will always be slaves to the system. We fight amongst ourselves and don't focus on the real enemy. ALL of racial division and any other prejudices with hatred is all planned and taught behavior that is there for a purpose. And that is to divide the people. The elite, powers that be, don't want us to focus on them. If you dig deep enough, and put in the hours to research, you will discover that there is in fact a global conspiracy. Things are not bad just because "bad politics". There is an agenda. Free speech is going away, and critical thinking is a rare find these days. Why do you think critical thinking is not taught in school? Think they forgot to add that by mistake? I think not.

That's right. And to teach him a lesson we're putting him on full paid administrative leave.

Let's make this easy on everyone. Put cameras and audio recordings in each and every classroom. I agree....NO ONE.....student/child/parent/teacher/care giver.....should abuse/bully/mistreat anyone else. Teachers are bullied by students every day.....now it appears that teachers do the same thing. Maybe if we all just treated one another a little better.....as well as being made to take responsibility when we screw up....then we couyld (teachers) get back to the task of.........teaching!
      • Janet C 13 days ago
I am with you camearas and audio in each and every classroom would eliminate this problems. So that the world can really see what is happening there are two sides to every story.

It's a double edged sword. Cameras can increase safety, while it is also used by government to monitor and track the citizens. It's not about having nothing to hide, but I don't care to be filmed. Do you want camera's in your living room where people watch you? After all, you have nothing to hide, so why complain? There are pros and cons to each side of the issues.
      • Howie Feltersnatch 13 days ago
Actually, I take that back. Cameras do nothing for safety, because the act is already done. They just may increase the likelihood that someone is caught, depending on the situation.

How is it a "murky issue" for school administrators. There is a clear line that a person in authority over a child should not cross, no matter how unruly the situation. If the teacher can't handle it then either they should get assistance or get out of that classroom and teach in an environment more suitable to their skills. It's that simple.

What's blurry about calling a child names, getting in their face, explicit adult conversations? Blurry? I don't think so. This is at the very least inappropriate behavior - at the most abuse. Get real. No way for kids to be treated. They should be able to trust their teachers. This is sick stuff. It's bullying. Plain and simple.

my son & his neighbor were disciplined because they taped a bus driver screaming at my son in his face pointing less than a quarter inch from his eyes. Nothing was done many kids have been removed from the school due to the same type of issues 2 I know personally not to mention my 4 children. Mrs Acosta is the principal at Foothills elementary school in Glendale AZ & did nothing but suspend my child who has a whole bus full of witnesses that said he was not the boy that cussed even kids he was not friends with defended him.

It happened to a young boy in the Atlanta city schools and the parents attached a wire to the boy's collar. They picked up not only verbal physical threats, but also alot of unnecessary chatter like Mr. Cheifetz recorded. I hope the teachers mentioned won't all seem to be white, racist teachers;in the Atlanta boy's case the teachers and aides were all black and the boy was white. However, in North Fulton Co., the teacher was white and she didn't care what her students thought either. I like Mr. Cheifetz believes, I know these teachers either think the students are total idiots and can't understand anything or if they do, they can't do anything about it. I used to work at an institution and heard some of the most demeaning statements geared toward the students (as they were called then). I too was bullied in school because I had a LD,was overweight, and non-assertive. I had a h.s. teacher who bullied me and the other white and Jewish students everyday with "Let's hate honky" lectures (this was during the 70's) and "Let's laugh at the 'retard'" when he was supposed to be teaching math. The other students he favoured could never got above 3rd grade math (much less algeebra). Not only was he not fired, but was promoted as vice-principal by the time my younger brother came along and proceeded to make life miserable for him too. Not only did we survive, we graduated from a university and college later, mainly because we later had better teachers who cared and that young man in Atlanta got transferred to a better school-via help by Bernie Marcus. There are better schools out there-or else home-school.

I'm getting tired of all these teachers on here complaining about how underpaid they are for what they "go through". Avg. salary in the US is $46K. But that's for 9 months of work. On an annual basis that's $61K a year. Get to leave at 3 PM, usually with a "lesson planning" period and lunch break. I haven't seen a lunch break away from my desk in years. Oh you have to go home and grade papers at night? Boohoo! My laptop is open at night too, and I'm usually doing a little more than drawing smiley faces and "Good Job!"s at the tops of my reports. Most teachers I know do something awesome in their free time as well for extra cash...tutor, coach a sport, officiate atheletics. Real hard life, I'll tell ya.

And thats just salary and working hours. Lets not forget most states have ridiculous govt. pension plans for their teachers. I have a cousin who retired from the Maryland state education system at 49 years old. Full pension, full benefits, for life. I'll be lucky to retire at 65.
      • jeff h 26 days ago
I'm sorry you hate your job. Just because you think you are underpaid does not mean teachers are overpaid. Teachers need to be paid more so teachers in elementary school rival the quality of teachers in colleges.
      • Channing 26 days ago
actually i agree with jtf. i think teachers get paid quiet enough, i am going to school now to be a teacher...not for the pay but because i think their should be teachers in school who actually appreciate their job, and enjoy the fact they are giving children the tools they need to succeed in life...not because i get a big fat paycheck in the end, that comes with time and experience. Too many people base their jobs on how much how much how much, (which, don't get me wrong, good money is a nice factor) but people in jobs like these need to be passionate about WHAT they are doing, not the amount they are doing it for.

Teachers have always bullied kids, this one just got cought. Teacher attitude has a big percentage of how your kid does on his grades in their room. Instead of useing phycology, if they have it in for him, you can forget the good grades. Most teacher are paid according to the ammount of education they have. It's a fact some people need more education than others and it's a good chance you kids teacher is a bully because he over education for the job he has.Teachers of this sort need to move on to harder classes according to their education and pay level, I don't think a second grade teacher should make $80-$90 thousand a year just because he has a doctrine degree, he should move to higher level of education insted of sitting around being a education BULLY because the goverment has too much emphansis on education.
    • Howie Feltersnatch  •  13 days ago
Why do people procreate anymore? Why would you want to bring a child into this insane world we live in? And with all the stress as it is, if you are in a relationship, that stress added to it to maintain it, and then you throw a child into the mix? What for? I think people have kids for all the wrong reasons - filling a void, societal conditioning, family pressure, someone to have power over, and so it goes. I rarely ever doubt someone says that they want to have a child so they can learn more about life and what it's like to be selfless. They just want one. Get a pet!

I too would like to know what precipitated this outburst. A teacher doesn't get riled up trying to explain prepositional phrases, the Civil War, Newton's law or whatever. The student must have done something unnecessary to the day's goals.

The child is autistic. The teacher is an idiot. There is your answer.
      • Just the Facts 29 days ago
@One of many - You are joking right? Did you even listen to the tape? Putting aside the abusive language directed towards a mentally challenged child (which in and of itself is enough to merit immediate termination), the teachers are talking about how wasted they got and how rough of shape they are in being hungover? Why are you apologizing for this type of behavior? You must be one of the government cronies trying to protect your own...
      • JM 26 days ago
One of many, I don't know what the standard of schools in Indanapolis are, but this type of behavior without reason is EXACTLY what I would expect from a public school teacher from my own experience.

Yes,we as teachers are suppose to protect our students because we are their voices. But while working in Gwinnnett County GA, I spoke out about what I considered mistreatment of some autistic students by another teacher. I lost my job several months later. GOOD JOB DAD.

its simple really,,cheap web cams and recorders in all classrooms, and impartial viewing by non teachers and non parents,it shouldn't take long to weed out this behaviour,oh and if you are caught being abusive,,fired on the spot,,
    • Patti  •  Monterey, California  •  29 days ago
Regardless of how a teacher may have been treated by his/her teachers as a young child does not give credence as an excuse for abuse. There is not an excuse in this universe that is good for the abuse this child and other autistic children or children of special needs received from ignorant teachers. They should all be fired on the spot and it should be absolutely not tolerated by the school system. If the teacher is not fired, the superintendent of the school district should be fired along with the teacher immediately. Allowing this type of behavior in school is unacceptable. I would call the police and file against the teacher for child abuse, sue the school for the principle, and call the newspaper and get a reporter on this to cause a stir and put a stop to it, and hopefully initiate a political stance in the schools that this behavior is unacceptable and intolerable and immediate firing will ensue should this happen in another school. And place camera in every special needs classroom.

Lets start with some honesty; when a kid picks on another kid, it is bullying, but when an ADULT "picks on" a child it is some form of abuse, period! I was abused by 3 different grade school teachers and 1 high school teacher. I was always a good kid and good student, so it's not like I was a troublemaker or anything. In grade school, the "bad" teachers would belittle me in front of the class, even smile and turn their back while I was pelted with rocks by the other students. One teacher yelled that every word out of my mouth was a lie and I should never speak again. A "popular" girl raised her hand and informed the teacher that what I had said was true, and HER MOM could be called to verify it too. The teacher just said "oh." and went on teaching, like nothing had happened. I dreamed of the day I could quit school and end the torment. My mom thought it was too ridiculous that teachers would behave that way, and told me to "stop being hysterionic!" Our moving to a new area is the only thing that saved me. In my senior year I had another teacher who bullied me through two semesters of a required course. two weeks before graduation, he took my term paper, smiled and dropped it in the garbage without opening the cover. He flunked me for the semester because he could and no one in the school would help me. I had to repeat a whole school year because I had no money for summer school fees. Some teachers are just evil. I believe that karma and/or a special place in hell exists for people who abuse children. There is an even deeper place for those who abuse children who are differently abled.
