Teen strippers: the new summer job?

Some teens looking to earn a little extra cash get jobs at Starbucks or McDonald's or babysitting the kids next door. Others can work at strip clubs-and it's perfectly legal.

In Rhode Island, teens can't drive until they're 16, vote until they're 18, or drink until they're 21, but they can work at strip clubs, taking off their clothes for a bunch of men who feed them dollar bills. Scary stuff considering a study that found that 60 to 70 percent of strippers have been sexually assaulted.

So why isn't it against the law? Because no one ever thought about it-until police found a 16-year-old runaway from Massachusetts working at a strip club in Providence, Rhode Island. During their investigation, they discovered that there was no Rhode Island law making it illegal for minors to work as strippers.

City officials are now working to get a law on the books that would fine strip clubs for hiring minors.

Is it legal for minors to strip in your state? Would you ever approve of your minor daughter or son working as a stripper? Is there an age at which you think it would be okay?

Why 18?? At the movies, you are considered an ADULT at the age of 13 and pay the ADULT price. Look at the ADULT age at Disney, it is not 18, it is 10 years old!! We do not complain paying for an ADULT price at Disney for a 10 year old. How come? But if a 10 year old wants to strip,we should wait until he / she is 18?? WHY?? Look at the Disney site for proof!http://www.orlandoticketsales.com/oi/Walt_Disney_World_C65.cfm?s_kwcid=disneyworld|2092427624

Now I will sound off on this. My daughter was a "dancer" from 17 yrs old until she was 29 yrs old. It took it's toll on her health (drugs: Meth, Coke, downers, and others) she died at 34 yrs old, had gained a lot of weight from drug usage, could no longer dance (boyfriend left her because she was fat-he was supporting her and the habits) she hung herself. All of this is in Texas, now tell me where were the cops-since it is a fact that a lot of these cops chase after these gals... or she pissed some one off.

It is disturbing that Rhode Island doesn't have a law on the books banning minors from stripping. I've read all the post and everyone makes a good point. CRAIG you are right that at 18 (wavier at 17) you can join the army(any military service), but also StephanieL is right that you should be 18 to strip. Since that is the age minorsa are considered an adult. I don't have a daughter but I feel your pain of loss snowwhite_76273. A parent should never out live their own child. My question is did you support her decisions to dane when she was 17? Did you try to stop or persuade her from that life. I personally am relieved that this happened. Now maybe people can actually fight about something important. Protecting our children. Cause lets face it at the age of sixteen you don't know the world and you shouldn't be getting exposed to the cruelty and harsh reality of it.

there isnt anything wrong with 18 yr olds stripping/dancing! Most are starting college, and college is expensive and if i had the right body, thats what i would do to help pay for college!

the underage girl probably had a fake id and that is why she got away with being a dancer. most states you have to be 21. some states are full nude with no alcohol so the girl can be 18. but you have to be a legal adult to dance in any club.

not all girls do drugs and drink heavily. some girls do this job to get through bachelors and masters and doctorate degrees - and some get straight As. Not all girls have families who help them with education - and if they stay smart, they can get their education and only work two or three nights per week.

not all men are fat perverts who give the girls their money that belongs to family. most of them are divorce, lonely and don't have the greatest social skills - and in a strip club - a pretty girl will actually talk to him and become his "friend" - not just for money - but for friendship - especially the 60 and 70 something widowers. there is a lot of dysfunction and yes - there are perverts - but not everyone is a disgusting pig.

people who do not know anything about this environment should not comment - because you don't know what you are talking about... most of the girls I know who were dancers got out of it after they got their money. others work because they like to keep a hot body well into their 40s. yes - even grandmothers can make a good living as a dancer. without being a whore.

yes - its is a low energy vibe - but its not all the crap you are talking about. get educated about it before you speak. know what you are talking about.

My cousin, worked for years as a "dancer" in local clubs and made really good money, HOWEVER, I do NOT think it is acceptable for minors to be stripping. Once a person reaches the age of 18 in this nation they are deemed an adult and therefore can pursue any career they see fit. As for the comments about making strip clubs 21 and up for entry...yeah that's not going to happen. A lot of clubs are 21 and up, but there are those that have the bar section seperate from where the "dancers" are and those 18-21 are not permitted to enter the bar area. I mean come on, next thing you know, bowling alleys (which serve alcohol are going to be 21 and up.. get a grip. Now as for the question at hand, would I allow my minor child to strip, HELL TO THE NO. Once my children reach the age of 18, it's their choice, I would encourage them to find another form of employment, even help them to look, or to go to college and help pay for it. But, again once they reach 18, there is not much I can do except hope and pray that I brought them up right and that they make mature and responsible life decisions. To the mother that lost her daughter, I am SO sorry for your loss...it is horrible to lose a child in any way. My prayers are with you and the rest of your family.

Snowwhite, I am so sorry for your loss. I don't comment on these posts very often, but your story really got to me. My thoughts are with you, and I my wish for you is that you may have happy thoughts and memories of your daughter when you are reflecting on her life. I have a little girl, and I can't imagine losing her. It is very strange that it is not illegal for girls who are under 18 to be strippers. . .it seems like common sense. . .

NO! It would never be ok for my child to be a stripper at any age. I found out in my own marriage that my husband was attracted to teens and it broke my heart and sole in half. He was attracted to me when we were teens but is not attracted to me now, only teens still. We are both 34. It is a shame and really hurts. I would not want my daughter exploited and nasty men whacking off looking at her. I totally understand the lure though to be a stripper. I think a job as a home health aide is much worse. I didn't want to strip, it is against my morals so did home health aide and caught all sorts of stuff at work and was always broke, I would of preferred to be admired and make the real dough.

How is this not the same as child porn? It's illegal for children under the age of 18 to pose or be photographed in sexual positions online or in print, yet they're allowed to do the exact same thing in bars? What if a customer takes a camera with him into a Rhode Island strip club. Would that be illegal?

Elvis was a fat drug addict and he was never a stripper.

they should just let the teens do what they want and they should also let us use weed

18 is the age that you become an adult. If you do such things like using drugs, get caught, then you are charged as an adult. There are only 2 or 3 strip clubs in the metro east area age 18-21 can get into. The rest of the zillion clubs around here, the requirement is no one under 21. Just because the age requirement is 21, there are tons of 18yr old + that do dance/waitress, because the law is 18yr olds are classified as an adult.
Now, at 16!! stripping?? I dont think so! Once my daughter reaches the age 18, I dont have a say in where she works. I could guide her and give her my best advice, never would I allow her to work in an enviornment that has many drugs and sexual attention.
I used to sit with the night managers, in the past, and seen all that happens even in a high maintanced top security club. I would find needles were left in the bathrooms, most of the waitresses were high on some upper, and some (not all) strippers were on downers. After the management would find out the girls were on these drugs, they either would be fined (pay dues to the club) or would be forced to leave (strippers here arent on a payroll, they are paid under the table by all their tippers and a little by the owners. Then the strippers have to pay the DJ per his effort to get you on stage.) Im ranting.
Basically 18 your an adult. under 18, I dont think so.

All you mothers who would support your daughters stripping sound like TRASH! Why not encourage them to get an education and become successful in life? Hearing things like this makes me sick. What a shame that there are so many girls out there who have no positve role models...but they mothers who encourage them to be strippers for a living.

To snowwhite. Very sorry for such a loss. But is that something you decided (about your daughter being a dancer at 17) or she got it herself?
    • Katrina  •  2 years 10 months ago
Wow! This is just crazy. I'm 16 and im not planning on doing that! Even if Im allowed to. Well ive never been to a club before.
    • Doktor Eevol  •  2 years 10 months ago
pffffft just because there's not a specific law against it, doesn't necessarily make it legal. Chucky is right - wouldn't employing minor children as strippers be against OTHER laws like child endangerment or corruption of a minor? Aren't there work laws for minor children too?

craig s - nobody is telling anyone else how to live their life. However, to insinuate a sixteen year old should start stripping when there's not enough protection for sex workers in the first place, is preposterous. I'm all for bringing the drinking age down, ect, but come on. Can't you wait until a young woman is at least LEGAL before demanding she strip?
    • lizzie  •  2 years 10 months ago
first off i think the governement needs to decide the legal age of "adult". 18 or 21? than combine all the privilages (smoking, voting, drinking, etc) into one. & whatever that age is, should also be the stripping age. anything younger will involve a minor which does constitute as child porno.

WELL I DNT SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I HAVE 2 PERFESSIONAL JOBS AND WHEN MONEY GET TIGHT LIKE RIGHT NOW. IM DANCING AT NIGHT. jUST BECAREFULL AND MAKE THE MONEY. DNT LET IT MAKE YOU.... DIMOND
    • Nikki  •  2 years 10 months ago
OMG!People are allowing these young girls to do this! How could they sleep at night?! For one, when you are 16 years old, you are a CHILD! I don't care what you may think, but you are a child! I might add that stripping is one of the dumbest things you can do! Why don't you get your butt to a McDonald's and ask for an application. Why do you need to strip for the dumb people at the strip club? Why? I would never let anyone I love, especially a daughter, do this!
But I guess all I can do is pray for these people!
