    The Easter Bunny: Explained

There are few traditions as mystifying as the Easter Bunny. For Christians, Easter Sunday marks the day that Jesus Christ was resurrected. So, how exactly did a giant rabbit come to be the symbol of this very religious holiday?

It's a question that many have asked, especially over the past 24 hours. Online lookups for "easter bunny origin" have doubled. Other web searches for "how did the easter bunny originate" and "easter bunny tradition" are also hopping upwards. Fortunately, the Web is full of answers.

According to various sources, including the good people at Mental Floss, the Easter Bunny has a long history as a pagan symbol. Experts believe that early Christians "co-opted" the rabbit as a way to make their own holiday more popular.

The abbreviated history: "Many pagan cultures held spring festivals" hundreds of years ago. One such festival was in celebration of "Eostre, the goddess of dawn." Mental Floss explains that Eostre was "linked to the hare and the egg, both symbols of fertility." As a way to convert the pagans to Christianity, missionaries began turning the festivals into Christian holidays.

It's a story with many similarities to the story of St. Patrick and the four-leaf clovers. According to Catholic.org, "Patrick used a three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the locals. However, other sites call this story just a myth." The Easter Bunny was another example of Christians using pagan symbols.

As for the modern version of the Easter Bunny -- you know, an enormous rabbit who wears a bow-tie and looks very cute -- he's mostly taken from German traditions that stretch back to the 1500s. Again according to Mental Floss, "The Germans converted the pagan rabbit image into Oschter Haws, a rabbit that was believed to lay a nest of colored eggs as gifts for good children."

And that's how we stand today. Not coincidentally, online lookups for "how to hard boil an egg" are through the roof. But something tells us most kids would be far happier to find candy and chocolate in their baskets.

Ummm, I've let the hate-filled anger & bile alone 'til now. It's come from both sides (Xn. v. pagan), but I've let it pass. . . .
And how about the Japs a century ago with their militant Shintoism and their allies the Nazis, whose Fuehrer actively sought to revive the long-dead pagan Teutonic religion?"

There is a difference in those Pagan faiths than the ones that the Romans and The Church wiped out. The original Pagans were worshippers of the Goddess not the God. They were healers that celebrated the Earth and all She provided them. They were not violent which is why it was easy to wipe them out. Yes, I will agree that the Norse and mongols were barbarians but the majority of the Pagans at this point in time, in the area, were followers of the Ancient Ways. Those who practiced Earth and healing magick,

So basically all the fun stuff about Christian holiday's is all adapted and borrowed from the pagan's? Cool. Guess I'll become a pagan and worship nature in all its purity.

as usual, the pagans had there celebrations first and then the christians changed it to something else, why can't people celebrate for any reason they choose to and not be judged...i beleive that is something that the bible says..."JUDGE NOT" p.s. i do see alot of people who don't deserve an easter basket here.

Easter is a complete distraction from what Jesus stands for. Ditto for Christmas... PAGAN to the core.... The early Christians would not touch these with a ten foot pole! Speaking of POLE you might look up the origin of the maypole .....(Warning: Rated R) The challenge is to find the Christian religion that worships God with spirit and TRUTH..(John 4:24)....hint...It is knocking at your doors in over 236 countries. (Matthew 24:14)

Bunnies! They're warm, soft, cuddly, my husband and I now have 9 bunnies (well they're easier and cheaper to raise than human children), well behaved, and love to sit on our bed. We just got a pink one for the season - bought her last month for 6 bucks from Walgreens.

you have many christian people telling people to stop using the easter eggs and rabbits because they know it comes from paganism. I think it should always be explained. You NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE CELEBRATING AND WHAT YOU ARE USING IN YOUR HOLIDAYS

At least you are willing to tell the truth. I tried explaning that the tree, garland, wreaths, and the Yule log are all from pagan traditions. Christians stole them to make them their own, in a failed attempt to destroy the pagans. But boy do they not like to hear the truth about their own religious history.

Ummm, I've let the hate-filled anger & bile alone 'til now. It's come from both sides (Xn. v. pagan), but I've let it pass. . . .

But Rob goes too far! I'm not angry, just very sad that he lets his pagan anger vent so venomously that it blinds him to reality. Ummm, how about the pagan Assyrians, the pagan Norsemen (Vikings), the pagan Mongols, the pagan Aztecs. . . And how about the Japs a century ago with their militant Shintoism and their allies the Nazis, whose Fuehrer actively sought to revive the long-dead pagan Teutonic religion? Obliterating cultures is WRONG whoever does it, most especially when accompanied by genocide it's wrong (or to be politically correct, it's inappropriate behavior). So pot, quit calling the kettle black.

It's funny how Christians get angry when they realize the pagan symbolism and influence that permeates their major holidays.

In reality, the pagans have a lot more reason to be angry with the Christians than vice versa. Christianity is responsible for wiping many cultures off the face of the earth.

lies...Christianity didn't steal Easter. It was added to Catholicism so the Roman empire (turned vatican) could get pagans to become catholic."

I'm confused. How can you say the Christians didn't steal it but the next sentence say it was added to Catholicism? The first form of Christianity in organized religion was Catholicism. It wasn't until later that the other sects split off, Lutheran, Episcopalian, ect. It all started when the Romans took Christs teachings and formed the Church, as you stated. That was when the Romans took some lessons from the Pharoah Amenhotep III and formed a Monotheism religion to convert the pagans too. And we all know what happened to those who refused. The Inquisition and The Burning Times ensued. Organized religions were originally created by men as a way to gain power and money. It's truly sad people don't read history and know why their faith was even started.

Easter has NOTHING TO DO with rabbits, eggs, or shamrocks. It has to do with the Resurrection Of OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. rabbits and eggs are food.
    • Fixitt  •  1 year 1 month ago
Heyyy.... the 'eggs' from my bunny are really small, and smell bad!!!
    • Danielwright2311  •  1 year 1 month ago
In the scriptures it does say do not learn and do the ways of the pagens, so we dont even celibrate it, its to risky for my blood to dishoner jesus in this way I will not do IT.But even though people know where it originated they still fell guilty for not hunting for eggs even though its all pagan, PAGAN MEANS WE DONT BELIVE IN GOD, WE BELIVE IN MANY, NOT JUST ONE CREATOR. THIS IS JUST TO LAPGH AT FOR ME,NO OFFENCE.

*sigh* The church didn't move Christ's resurrection to this time of the year to shanghai Bunnytime from the pagans. If you look at the text, the crucifixion falls during Jewish Passover, which just happens to coincide with the time of year that things get all fecund in the Northern Hemisphere. They may have borrowed the name of the month of the festival for the name of the festival in one part of Europe, but that's really not standard...other countries such as Finland, Hungary, France, and Greece have more ecclesiastic meanings behind their names. Now, if you want to judge the whole world's celebration of Easter as a skeeve off of Paganism on the basis of the Germanic languages, be my guest...but it sounds awfully Anglo-centric. (Mind you, I'll admit that the bunnies and the eggs don't make much sense to me...but, then...they don't really make too much sense as religious experiences outside of a good French café.)

Paula, A few of your comments are not true in relation to Jehovah's Witnesses..Yes they do believe that Jesus is the Son of God(the commemoration of his ransom sacrifice was observed last Sunday as commanded by Jesus). You also stated in one sentence that Jesus is the son of God and Jesus is God. That one sentence contradicts itself. Jesus did say that no one comes to the Father except through him, John 6:44, another reference to God and Jesus being two separate entities. 1 Corinthians 2:16, states "Who has come to know the mind of God that he may instruct him? But we do have the mind of Christ". If Jesus was God, then we would know the mind of God. John 20:17, Jesus said to Mary, "Stop clinging to me. For I have not ascending to the Father. But be on your way to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and Your Father and to my God and your God"..Even Jesus acknowledges that he has a higher source. This is another example to show God and Jesus are separate. There are many other scriptures to support that God and Jesus are not the same...These posts started with the origin of the Easter Bunny which has pagan roots. You may want to research the Trinity to find out it's roots..

Theres nothing christian about all holidays that people celebrate. every single one has roots in pagan traditions, and you can't just dismiss that as ok. not to scare people, but its one of the many ways that the bible's prophesied "false tongues" and false teachers of Christendom, backed by the "father of the lie" (Satan) have deceived thousands, millions of people. there is no excuse for it. Jesus would be ashamed that the majority of people who profess to be Christians are instead being blasphemers and celebrating pagan traditions. Just sayn... Jesus and his apostles had bread and wine on the passover, not bunnies and eggs. Think about it before you do it. Its good to see that so many people have done research though, shows that some people care. The ones who knowingly continue, shows whats really important to them...

I'm glad that JESUS is not a religion or event or holiday.
