This Mother Still Breastfeeds Her Six-Year Old Son! Is That Great or Gross?

Amanda Hurst has incited a major debate in the Mommy community because she breastfeeds both her five-month-old son and her six-year-old son at the same time. We're shocked!

According to The Daily Mail, when it comes to feeding to her two young sons breakfast, 29-year-old English mother Amanda Hurst does it her way: She forgoes cereal and gives them both breast milk. The controversial part of this story, however, is that while her son, William, is five months old, her other son, Jonathan, is six years old. Sometimes, she feeds them both at the same time. Jonathan even has a special name for his mother's breast milk, "Lellow."

Needless to say, Hurst's decision is causing a lot of debate among moms, both in England and here in the States.

"I know some people think it's strange," Amanda, who resides in the sleep English village of Hemingfeld, says. "But I think it's perfectly natural. He's doing it less and less and it's only a morning thing. I'm feeding William, Daddy's gone to work and it's cold, so I don't want to get out of bed. I've only tandem fed them five or six times as it's difficult. Jonathan has to lie alongside me and prop himself up." Sounds like she's being a little selfish and lazy.

She goes on, "I do question the decisions I make and wonder whether I'm right or wrong. But it's parenting, there is no manual, I don't think there is a right way. I wouldn't say to someone that I think breast is best unless they asked me why I was breastfeeding. Everyone has the right to make decisions for themselves."

Do breast firming creams really work? We asked the experts!

We understand her point, but on the other side of the coin, there are moms who think there is something disturbing about a kid who can walk and talk and play baseball - a boy who can demand his own "lellow"-suckling on his mother's breast.

So what do you think, HollyMoms?

Yes al true, and I still say the same thing today I said yesterday. People don't be afraid to nurse your children and let then nurse for as long as they need to do so for them to remain healthy and free of deseases.

I find it is normal for a child of any age to suckle from his or her mom, that is if the mother is ok with it. In fact I once had a neighbor that breastfed her six year old and told my wife about it,she said the only inconvenient was that he had very high demands and she could hardly supply all he needed,I don't know at what age he stopped but he seems to be very well adapted and well behaved today.I am surprised it is not done more often and why is it so taboo in our society. Breastfeeding is the most natural thing to do for mothers.

She knows what she is doing- she seems healthy- it is a maternal instinct. When the child does not feel like he needs it, then he will stop! Leave the woman alone!

I'm not one to pass judgment so I'll refrain from name calling, etc., however I do believe that is a bit gross. I was talking to my 3-year-old daughter the other day and asking her if she remembers getting milk from mommy. She said yes and touched my chest on the side. It's not unusual for her to touch me, but she normally rubs the top of my chest that is exposed in a v-neck shirt. She asked me if I still had milk and I said no. She then said she wants to see/try for herself. I gently told her no and that she's a big girl. I weaned her a little over two years ago. I haven noticed that she still likes that position of nursing and comfort. I understand how the 6-year-old boy would want to continue that comfort and bond, but if I were his mother I would have weaned him long ago and replaced that time with taking a nap together, playing or reading together. Something that continued to nurture the relationship without him suckling at the breast. For me, 6 is to old. Should be up to 2 and maybe longer for preemies.

Yeah! I would say breast feeding a child after 1yr let alone 6 years old is sick, and gross. I wonder what the kids friends think or wonder?

milk may not be good for the teeth if left overnight in the mouth of toddlers.

I'm going to vomit. She should be arrested for child abuse.

I breast fed my child for nine to 12 months. She got the best of the best for almost a year. She is beautiful and happy and a high achiever and well-adjusted individual. But I would be concerned about this one. What does daddy think? Is daddy getting his breast milk too? How about the whole family are we getting a daily intake of breast milk?

I wonder if you still breast feed the six year old in public? That is just sick and I’m sure a lot of others would agree if they seen you breast feeding a six year old in the park or the restaurant. Do you still breastfeed the six year in public? I wonder why? I’m sure you would be asked to leave the restaurant!

Because it’s eww, sick, creepy, gross, and borderline incest. What about the six year old drinking from a cup and eating solid foods. What about his teeth development. He should be eating hard foods to promote healthy teeth and gums.

      · Ewww! Yeah! I would say breast-feeding a child after 1yr let alone 6 years old is sick, and gross. I wonder what the kid’s friends think or wonder?
      · That doesn't mean your family is not dysfunctional just because your grandmother breastfeed her child until 7 yrs of age. That doesn't mean it is healthy.
This is just sick. What is wrong with you mom?
Sounds like mom is going to raise a whiner, spoiled brat momma's baby

Yeah, let’s talk about the psychological and physical affects on the child, how can this be healthy? How can this child become an independent man one day?

That would be too much like right to pump the breast. And also take some work. Then we have to discipline the six year old to drink from a cup he doesn’t need to suck her nipple. Only if he is a spoiled brat baby. Come on mom the your little boy is starting school unless you are going to home school and shelter and baby the child some more. He better
get off the breast before he gets ridiculed and bullied to death.

There seems to be a lot of "knee-jerk" reactions on here. Yes this behavior is out of the realm of societal norms, but this is by far a damaging activity. Our American socialization makes this seem odd, but biologically a mother will produce milk until the child stops drinking it. It was normal for a child of 3 or 4 to breast feed even as late as the 1900's so why is it odd now? The problem is motivation, nothing a mother does in relation to a child's well-being should be done out of laziness, which it seems this mother is doing. It all should depend on the child's development and whether or not he sees this activity as a bonding with his mother or is indulging in some type of oedipal relationship. It is hard to see anything other than the latter in this story, but if it is the first then there is no reason that this will prevent the child from developing "naturally".

This is very creepy and strange. If other kids his age found out about this he'd be a laughing stock at school. Does the father know whats going on after he goes to work?

The six year old should not still be sucking on his mother breast. I feel its crazy an in the long run may influence the boy to start having sexual thoughts at a younger age. The six year old is not a baby and at that age remembers things well. I wonder if the mother will continue putting her breast in his mouth if the boy starts havIng erections!!!!!!!!

We have seven children. All educated at home by their college educated mother through high school essentially. Two are in grad school now, two are in undergraduate school. The next three are well on their way in following after their older siblings. They all have different academic disciplines that they are pursuing on the post secondary level. All are very bright and landed both academic and corporate scholarships, So far only on 2 credit hours out of over 475 college level credits cumulative between them has not received an A grade. Guess what? They all were breast fed until age 4!!!!!!!!!

I would like to see her in public nursing a six yr old or nine yr old well, what about a 13 yr old. You think that's normal? I will tell you what it is!

It’s creepy, disgusting, sick and down right incest and gross there. That's just the beginning.

I think breastfeeding is just great at what ever age, provided the child is having other regular meals to meet his/her diet. My daughter is two years old and is still asking for breastmilk, but she is also still taking her Cerelac and SMA as well the stable food for Liberians RICE and every other food she wants and is as smart as hell, she is in school and learning to recite her rhymes. So,I don't see it as a problem.

I agree with most of the other comments and I think this situation is gross. I understand that breast milk is natural and most people consume the milk of animals, but couldn't she at least put the milk in a cup? I really hope that child has a chance at a "normal" life (whatever that means these days).
    • Janna  •  1 year 5 months ago
Well it is a little odd, I think if that's what she had decided to do then that's great. In many cultures chidlren aren't weaned till they are older. In history and even in the bible some people (even kings) had wet nurses well into adulthood and even marriage. It's natural and healthy and I sure wished that with both my children by body would have been able last longer than four or five months. Although I would have probably stopped at 2. That boy is probably more healthy than most children his age and the only problems he may have will because sick perverts like yourself twist and turned something that is suppose to be normal into some type of sexual act. Im sorry but boobs weren't made for husbands they are there for the children.

There is another view point of European women who are regularly topless on the beaches and in front of kids, no one views this as being sexual, its in the US that we have a problem with breasts. It is why many are going crazy getting implants. There is a difference between getting implants to look womanly, rather then a sex pot. Give the woman a break, , the child does not see a womans "boobies" as sexual, he/she is totally unaware of sex, and should not be thinking this way UNLESS there is a problem in the exposure that he/she should not be involved in.

Hate to be judgy, but that is GROSSSSS and TWISTED. A baby is big enough to not have to drink from a nipple at a certain age (by 1-ish), if this mother REALLY wants the boy to have her breastmilk she should pump it and put it in a glass. What a freak.
