What Your Child's Teacher Won't Tell You

Adapted from interviews with teachers by Neena Samuel

©2009 Jupiterimages Corporation©2009 Jupiterimages Corporation1. My first year of teaching, a fifth-grader actually threw a chair at me. I saw him recently, and he told me he just graduated from college. That's what makes it all worthwhile.

    2. I have parents who are CEOs of their own companies come in and tell me how to run my classroom. I would never think to go to their office and tell them how to do their jobs.

    3. We don't arrive at school 10 minutes before your child does. And we don't leave the minute they get back on the bus. Many of us put in extra hours before and after school.

    4. We are not the enemy. Parents and teachers really are on the same side.

    5. The truth is simple: Your kid will lie to get out of trouble.

    6. Encourage your child to keep reading. That's key to success in the classroom at any age.

    7. We can tell the difference between a parent helping their child with homework and doing it for them (especially when they're clueless in class the next day).

    8. Teaching is a calling. There's not a teacher alive who will say she went into this for the money.

    9. Just because your child says he did his homework doesn't mean it's true. You must check. Every night.

    10. Teaching is not as joyful as it once was for many of us; we get jaded too. Disrespectful students and belligerent parents take a toll on us.

    11. Parents give their kids the pricey gadgets and labels, but what kids really crave is for you to talk to them. They want to know you are interested in their lives.

    12. We spend money out of our own pockets to buy things our students need, such as school supplies and even shoes.

    13. Supportive, involved parents are crucial. But some are "helicopter parents"--they hover too much.

    14. Having the summer off is great, but many of us have to take on extra jobs--teaching summer school, tutoring--to make ends meet.

    15. Success is not achieved by just making kids memorize flash cards and prepping them for an Ivy League school. Sensible parents know there is a college for every kid, and that responsibility and good citizenship are what really drive success.

    16. Nobody says "the dog ate my homework" anymore, but we hear a lot of "I left it on the kitchen table." And then Mom will send in a note to back up the story.

    17. We wish parents would make their kids own up to their actions instead of pressuring us to bend the rules.

    18. Please stop doing everything for your child and allow them to make mistakes. How else will they learn? Kids are not motivated to succeed because they feel their parents will bail them out every time.

    19. There are days when I just want to quit, but then that one smile from that one kid, changes it all.

Finally! A usefull reminder for some of us parents, and an informative one for the others! Well worth my time :)

#8 Is'nt entirely true at first, I have heard many seniors going into college saying they want to be a teacher to have the weekends, holidays and summers off, HOWEVER I know most of that changes & they end up enjoying teaching!
I agree with # 18 nowadays~ It's got to be hard when so many parents aren't looking at the BIG PICTURE! Coping skills are needed in today's society!

#13 is very true. Teachers have limited budgets and many of them spend their own $$ to supply their students with the proper learning materials.

      # 17. People do say " my dog ate my homework", but normally it is true. With homework in hand, bites missing. My friends once had that happen.

I've been a middle school teacher for 11 years. Rule #1 - we have that one, too, but we call it the "all hands on deck" rule :)

Remember to thank a teacher today! Good article, unfortunately too many true statements, especially #19.

the one thing parents forget is that a good education begins in the home, before school, and continues through out the school day.

First of all this chat has nothing to do with married teenagers. If you don't like my comments there then complain there that isn't what were talking about. I'm not holding a gun to your head. If you don't like my statements you don't have to read them. And do not tell me to get off the computer or get off this site. Do you run the internet? Do you run this chat site? So you have no control over what I do. I am a human being same as you and have the right to my opinions. I went to school through some of my childhood and was home schooled the rest. And home schooled children do better in college than anyone else according to researchers. It's because they can learn on their own level and not either try to keep up or be bored waiting for the others to keep up. I was so bored in school because all they every taught about was stuff I already knew. That was one of a couple of reasons our parents pulled us out. And on top of that my mother took CLASSES on how to home school at a college. Which means she home schooled the way the government wants which MEANS we are just as up to date as other people our age. And I don't take kindly to you implying my mothers an idiot. There is no need for name calling. We aren't children.
And obviously you don't read my full statements. I give REASONS why I don't think there is a right and wrong where punctuation is concerned. I don't just randomly say "I don't believe in english". And if you want I can give you a whole layout of why then things us teach and how they teach are ruining our kids. But it would take a lot of writing and I don't think you would even listen to my reasons anyway. What do you people do take one statement in my comments and ignore the rest? Twice I have left a reason WHY english isn't important (the class not the language) for our kids to learn and both times people have commented on it like there wasn't even a reason. Like I was just like "kids don't need to learn". I even said I do think kids should learn. Just not the WAY we teach it in schools. I am a fan of knowledge. Just not the supposed "knowledge" they teach in school. If you want to know my reasons for not believing in english please RE READ my statements COMPLETELY. I give a reason even if you don't agree it gives you no right to call me an idiot. Basically what your saying is that anyone who doesn't agree with your standards is an idiot. Whatever happened to "we should be excepting of everyone" that you guys are always preaching?

You check their homework and make them sit the heck down and finish it. That is how #19 gets done. If they leave the homework at home, they need to accept the bad/no grade. If you teach them that it is ok, by writing the note, they will keep doing it. Show your kids that you care about their grades and make them be responsible until they are able to be responsible themselves. Believe me. In ten years, as a freshman in college, no professor is going to give a crap if you left your homework on the table. You will get an F. I had to have a doctor give me permission to miss a day of class because I had the flu and then I have to go to health services to have them tell my teachers that I had permission to miss class.
Believe me, when my daughter starts school next year, she will have to learn how to be responsible. In the hopes that one day she grows up into a responsible, worthwhile member of society.

That was a great write-up. Indeed, Teachers are gifts to everyone of us . Parents need to take their responsibilities in their children lives seriously.Over protection of a child will not only destroy him or her, but will come back to hunt you in the future.

Great Points RD! Every parent should take note of these points!

Did you know that even though 80% of americans are going to college only 20% graduate. It was on the news this morning. The others are just in massive debt after they give up because they were to busy partying to take college seriously.

      TRUE TRUE TRUE!!!!!!

I think this article should be retitled: 20 things your child's teacher SHOULD tell you.
    • H  •  2 years 8 months ago
And if I still use algebra even though I don't know it then why teach it to kids? I mean according to you they use it whether they know it or not so why shove it down their throat.
And why should kids be miserable for a whole year and just HOPE that next year they get a better teacher?
And talk about seeing things from one point of view! You see things from one point of view. That kids NEED to Go to school to become intelligent.
I like how people say that "you see things from one point of view" well so do you if you can't see my side. By saying my side is all wrong you are seeing it from only one side as well.
And to quote your own words back "Do not attack people for your own ignorance". Don't attack me just because you can't understand where I'm coming from. Fyi by calling me ignorant that shows your own naivety. There is no need for name calling we aren't children.
      • Autumn Boyd 3 months ago
This is a ridiculously incoherent post. No one is attacking you because of their ignorance...it's because of yours.
