But in a recent interview with The Sun, the 36-year-old actress and mom of six says that she had her first taste of live-in love when she was just 14.
"One of my boyfriends lived with me at my mum's house when I was just 14," she said in the interview, which focused on her relationship with her mother, actress Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away from cancer in 2007 at the age of 56.
"He was my first boyfriend at a time when I wanted to be promiscuous and was starting to be sexual," she told The U.K. Mirror in 2001, confessing that she lost her virginity to the boy when she was barely a teenager. "We were in my bedroom, in my environment, where I was most comfortable and I wasn't in danger."
"It was the smartest thing my mother could have done because, this way, we weren't hanging out in a park together," Jolie told The Sun this week. "We lived like a married couple for two years."
Safety is a factor cited by many parents who allow their teenager's boyfriends or girlfriends to sleep over, but Jolie says that the experience also kept her focused on work instead of boys as she got older.
"By the time I was 16, I wanted my freedom and wanted to focus on work," she explained. "So I graduated from high school early and went to work." Her career took off, and she didn't date again until she met Jonny Lee Miller, an actor whom she married (wearing rubber pants and a blood-spattered T-shirt) in 1996, when she was 19. They divorced in 1999. She was married to actor Billy Bob Thornton from 2000 to 2003, and has been with Pitt since 2005.
Some may say it's an example of super-permissive parenting, but Jolie says her relationship with her mom was about friendship. "I was my mum's girlfriend. So I was able to talk to her about everything," she told The Sun.
"If anybody ever tells me that I am a mother to them like my mum was to me, it will be a great compliment," Jolie said. No word on whether that means Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivian will be allowed to have romantic roommates when they're teens. What do you think? Would you let your teenager's boyfriend or girlfriend move in with you?
