There is something girlie, fun, and flirty about a sleek, high ponytail. The pony communicates a sexy, energetic youthfulness, especially when combined with an eye lash-grazing, full fringe. It characterizes a woman who is full of life, bubbly and effervescent, and ready for a new challenge. If your hair is long, you really can't go wrong with this bouncy, feminine look. Here's how to get the best sleek and chic high ponytail.
Tools and products.
You'll need to have a few products. Grab some hair gel, flat iron spray, and your favorite hair spray. You may want to have a bit of pomade on hand, too. You'll also need a paddle brush or a cushion brush, a rat tail comb, and a hair elastic or two. Don't forget a couple of bobby pins and hair clips. For tools, you'll need your blow dryer and flat iron.
Wash and blow dry. Wash your hair with a smoothing shampoo and follow with conditioner. Gently blot your hair dry, but don't rub to keep the cuticle smooth. Apply your hair gel and work it through your hair spritz on your flat iron spray, and then blow dry. Dry your hair in small sections, starting at your neck. Clip up the rest of your hair until you're ready for the next section. Using your paddle brush, blow dry each section, aiming towards the ends of the hair. This helps keep the cuticle closed and smooth.
Flat iron. If necessary, flat iron your hair after it is completely dry. A wider flat iron is great for getting the ends of your hair super straight. Flat iron in small sections, just as you would blow dry your hair. Use the lowest heat setting possible. Gently glide the flat iron down the hair shaft, from roots to ends, being careful to always keep the iron moving--this will prevent any crimps.
Create the pony. Use your cushion brush or paddle brush to create your ponytail. Center the pony high on the back of your head, where it begins to slope away from the top. Brush all your hair in that direction until it is as smooth as possible. Wrap your hair elastic around until it is taut, and then pull the sides of the ponytail to tighten them a bit more. Be very careful not to create lumps and bumps in the pony. If you're having trouble getting your ponytail smooth, it may help to apply a small bit of pomade to your hair. Just be careful not to use too much so your hair doesn't look greasy.
Smooth. Use your rat tail comb to smooth any lumps in your ponytail. Lightly spray your hair with your favorite, deliciously scented hair spray and use the tail of the comb to flatten flyaway pieces. You can also use the tail to gently tuck in any loose pieces.
Hide the elastic. Take a very small section of hair from the bottom of the ponytail and wrap it around the base of the pony, covering the elastic as you go. Once all the hair is wrapped, you can pin the tail inside the base so it is invisible. The more hair you wrap around the elastic, the higher your ponytail will go, and the more drama you create.
Touch up. You may need to touch up the ends of your ponytail. Take your flat iron and gently re-straighten it so that it is super straight.
Spray. Spray your hair with your most luxurious hairspray for a feeling of femininity that will last all day.
Enjoy that fun, flirty feeling with your high, sleek ponytail!
