The National Guard Rescues Dogs during a hurricane. Although power has been restored to many homes since Hurricane Sandy struck the Northeast nearly two weeks ago, a countless number of pets remain missing. That's for a number of reasons. Sadly, some folks had to evacuate and leave their pets behind. Not all emergency shelters permit pets, and no one knew how bad the storm would be; many folks poured large bowls of food and water and hoped for the best for their beloved pets. Now some pets are missing, or were rescued mid-storm, and it's time to either unite owners and their pets or help the pets that are suffering.
Here are 4 ways you can help locate missing pets:
1.) Get on Facebook
If your pet is lost or missing, there's a great Facebook group that's been set up to help.
You'll need a good color photo of your cutie, but they've been great and helping pets and people connect.
2.) Use PetFinder
PetFinder has a great list of shelters that need volunteers to help manage the pets they are fostering for evacuees.

3.) Volunteer with the Humane Society
This organization is coordinating a pet search and rescue for both New York and New Jersey. For information, you can call the Hurricane Sandy Pet Rescue Hotlines. The New York City hotline: 347-573-1561, and the New Jersey hotline: 1-855-407-HSUS.
4.) Get involved at the ASPCA
This group is also on the scene and helping to get pets and families back together, and is also going into homes to get pets left behind. You can donate to their efforts here.
