6 New Breeds Competing in 2012 Westminster Dog Show

    By WebVet.com

Six new breeds will be competing at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this week. A total of 2,000 dogs, representing 185 breeds will fight for the title of Best in Show beginning on February 13.

The new breeds include Mexico's hairless Xoloitzcuintli, the Finnish Lapphund, the Norwegian Lundehund, the Cesky Terrier, the American English Coonhound and the Entlebucher Mountain Dog.

"We will have at least two dogs in every breed, including the new ones," explained David Frei, the Westminster Kennel Club's director of communications. "New breed is a little bit of a misnomer because a lot of these breeds have been around for hundreds, or even thousands of years in some of the cases."

In the past 23 years of the show's 136-year history, more than 40 new breeds have been added to the competition -- however their chances of winning the top prize are slim.

"The shortest time between a breed competing at Westminster and winning best of show is 27 years," said Frei. "That was the Bichon Frise. It had its first year in 1974 and won best in show in 2001."

Too bad they are not marketed the way the way the purebreds are.
      • Rat Killer 3 months ago
True professional breeders do not market their dogs, people come to them begging to get on the list to buy them.

Amateur breeders that produce more than one litter in 2 years, from dogs with poor petigrees just to sell the pups for money are the problem.

      Mutt = nature's hybrid.
Son's dog (95lb) is some of this, some of that; there's even some Westie (THAT must have been interesting). He's mostly Galoot with a large dose of Lumox.....but 100% Wuss and we love him (dog and son, that is) : ]
      • joyce 3 months ago
hybrid refers to crossing of species, mix breed is crossing of same species. wolf/dog crosses are hybrids.

Jeese Joyce, they are being funny! Read between the lines! They are saying that the AKC sucks and doesn't mean anything!! Purebreeds are mentally challenged because they are nothing but inbred. Her mutt (like most mutts!) are better than pures!

    • Lisa H  •  3 months ago
I always like hearing about breeds of dogs that most people have never heard of. I, personally, have a mutt and have always had mutts.
    • patricia  •  St Louis, Missouri  •  3 months ago
Over the years, I have had mixed breeds, strays and pure bred ranging from setters, pointers, wired fox terriers, collies, beagles etc. The attitudes of these were all based on the people who were in their lives. Currently, I have a English Springer Spaniel,(my second,) and I feel that this is one of the best breeds I have ever had, but right up there is a Collie/Shepherd mix that we found as a stray. All dogs need a loving home, purebreeds and mutts. The problem is not in adopting purebred dogs, the problem is that irresponsible people do not spay or neuter their pets.

Is the Snooki ever going to compete?
    • Penelope  •  3 months ago
I thought the Norwegian Lundehund was already a entered breed. They are CUTE!!! They are also called puffin dogs and extremely flexible.

But to be honest, I have met very mean yorkies and buttery Great Danes. If a pooch is friendly (or a Diva), they have my respect.

We need a show for Mutts - they r the best of show in my book!!
