When Will My Labrador Stop Chewing on Everything?

    By Dr. Marty Becker, vetstreet.com

Q: We have a Labrador Retriever who is 10 months old. He has all his adult teeth, so he should no longer be teething. But he is incredibly destructive still - he chews up everything he can get hold of. What can we do?

A: Among veterinarians, there's a saying about Labradors: "Chew till they're two; shed till they're dead." Of course, every dog sheds his or her whole life - that's normal. In the same way, what you're dealing with now is also normal for many dogs. Retrievers, especially, are known for their love of chewing throughout their adolescence, along with the lifelong fondness many of them have for carrying items in their mouths. Carrying things back - retrieving - is, after all, the job they were developed to do.

To get a handle on the chewing, your family needs to limit your dog's ability to get to those items you don't want chewed. While doing that, offer your dog lots of chew toys to satisfy this healthy, natural behavior, and work on rewarding your dog for making the right choices when he chooses what to chew. You also need to make sure your dog is getting enough exercise - at least a half hour of heart-pumping activity every day to take the edge off his youthful exuberance. Your veterinarian can advise you on choosing healthy, safe chew toys, and there have never been more choices. One perennial favorite is the Kong, which can be stuffed with goodies (such as peanut butter and broken dog biscuits) to make it even more appealing.

If you catch your dog chewing something he shouldn't, don't punish him. (Really, the fault isn't his, but rather your family's for not supervising him better.) Instead, transfer his attention to a favorite chew toy and then praise him for chewing on that. Expect that your dog's perfectly normal and healthy interest in chewing will continue for at least another year.

My mix just recently stopped chewing. She'll be two next month, maybe that's why!

Dr. Becker hit the nail on the head, "exercise". I have a field dog.....Lab, and she gets plenty of exercise every day. I've had Labs for over 30 years and the only one that was a holly terror on chewing was the one I did not take to the field. That does not mean my latest little muncher is free of guilt. Actually, it was my fault when I leave gloves or other items not intended for mutilation. But, don't get me wrong, even with 2-3 hours of work and fun time, she still has a lot of energy when we get home....but will often sleep for a while. Also, a lot of attention to them is most important. One note about "protection". Labs are gentle, at least from my experience, but they can, and will be protective of it's family. In closing, I still miss my Shady Lady. When I'd come home, she'd have my boots and shoes all lined up at the door, and if she could get her nose to open the closest door, my hunting coat was also laying on the floor.

Just like some babies need a pacifier to suck on, some dogs need to chew! When my rescued pitbull mix was a puppy and would chew on something she wasn't supposed to, I would tell her "no" in a firm voice and give her a rawhide bone. She eventually learned that it was okay to chew the bones and nothing else! Never once had a problem after that!

My black lab is 4 yrs old and she has never stopped chewing. Granted she went from chewing my wood dining room chairs to match box cars, but she still chews. She will run around the back yard to find sticks that have fallen off of trees and chew all day if she could. I wouldn't recommend letting your lab chew on sticks though as she got one caught across the roof of her mouth when she was chewing on it and I had to take her to the vet to have it pulled out. She is the sweetest dog I have ever had and is so gently when playing with my pug dog or when my 1 yr. old grandaughter is playing with her. I have noticed that she is starting to become more protective of the house, when outside, as she gets older but they are a great breed.

Love my yellow lab... the girl is VERY hyper and chews on everything ( that is hers).. She is a few days from being a year.. good to know I got at least another year of chewing. She loves to fetch and play around. She has much more energy then my 3kids and myself, so I got her a puppy..LOL.. Now Daisy is a very happy girl!

Did any Lab owners experience a split personality in their dogs? They're gentle, loving, and without a mean bone in their body toward people. Yet they are completely intolerant of other dogs. In one instance even insanely wrestling off a leash to savagely attack another strange dog being walked on a leash minding it's own business 50 feet away.

Sounds like my Golden/Lab mix. Totally intolerant of other dogs ... except at the dog park for some reason. There she plays with the other dogs.

You expect a mouth oriented breed to stop chewing on stuff? Did you do any research at all before you brought the dog home?

OMG I miss our Lab so much. Yes he chewed for a little while but we had a Toy Bin for him with everything from small to large stuffed toys. Loved to find the squeeky ones and his puppy so he could get a treat. Also the Kong with Peanut Butter worked great. Labs love lots of Loving and can never get tooooooo much. Best Member of the Family you could choose.

The chew thing my Lab can't destroy is a Nylabone; I tried all kinds of chew toys, but he would start to destroy anything else I gave him.
      • Casualcat 3 months ago
They are supposed to destroy them it is part of the fun for the dog.

I didn't want him to eat any plastic or rubber; they can't digest that; ok, to destroy, but eats everything.

Answer: NEVER! My lab is only 5 months old and i've already figured that out. I love picking out different flavored rawhides and he enjoys the variety. Never the granulated rawhide. That's gone in 2 minutes flat.

I know my 1 year old lab goes through rawhides like candy. LOL The only ones that seem to last a little while are the knotted ones I get at petsmart. He likes all the different flavors but peanut butter seems to be his favorite. Enjoy your puppy, labs are the best. :)

They stop when you train them to stop. Duh. Just like children.
