New proposed law makes attending dog fights illegalThere are not many things worse than dog fights. People who participate, plan, and train dogs to fight are some of the worst kinds of humans, in my opinion. The thought of it sickens me so much that I can barely stand to read or hear about them, but still I do it because the only way these disgusting and horrific actions are going to stop is if we do continue to strengthen the laws and enforcement of people who participate. Now, a new proposed law makes attending a dog fight illegal, and punishable by prison time.
On June 21, the U.S. Senate approved the Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act, which makes it a federal offense "to knowingly attend an organized animal fight and would impose additional penalties for bringing children to animal fights. Violators would face up to one year in prison for attending a fight, and up to three years in prison for bringing or causing a minor to attend."

Nancy Perry, Senior Vice President of ASPCA Government Relations, explains the proposed law:
"This measure would help law enforcement by allowing them to pursue and punish the spectators who drive the market for animal fighting. Furthermore, children need protection from the spectacle of animal fighting, as well as its dangerous and illegal associated activities, including drugs, weapons and gambling."
The ASPCA reports that "in order for the Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act to become law, the U.S. House must add the same language it its version of the Farm Bill, which is still being crafted. Hopefully, the Farm Bill will be finalized by the end of summer.

Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states but prior to this measure, attending a dogfight held no punishment. Now by making attendance a federal offense, the government will move a step closer toward protecting defenseless animals.
I only hope that the penalties become stiffer and punishments more severe.
