How Can I Tell If My Cats Are Just Playing or Actually Fighting?

    By Arden Moore,vetstreet.com I November 30, 2011

Not sure if your indoor cats are just play wrestling or actually getting ready to erupt into a full-blown fight?

    Here's a clue: listen.

Cats who play wrestle behave like feline mimes. They will tumble and paw thump without emitting yowls or meows.

Dr. Sophia Yin, a veterinary behaviorist who serves on the executive board for the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior, shares a few other clues that point to a friendly tussle rather than a real feline feud.

    • Cats who play fight do not move at a fast pace.
    • Each cat takes a turn at being on his back and pouncing on his feline friend.
    • The pair will stop and start a lot, much like wrestlers moving on a mat to get into position.

I recently spotted my cats, Murphy and Zeki, playfully wrestling in a hallway, so I recorded them. Their silent melee drew the attention of my two dogs, Chipper and Cleo, who (as the below video of the feline acrobatics depicts) assessed the situation and walked away.

Just like dogs, cats need physical exercise to keep their muscles toned as well as fend off boredom. Plus, cats form select friendships with other felines, which they exhibit through mutual grooming - and the occasional mock fight.

I have to stop my boys from playing too hard sometimes, especially when their back claws gets too close to their face and/or eyes. Otherwise, I let them play-fight.

They are just playing. When you see fur flying, you know there is a real cat fight. I can tell the dogs were not impressed.

One of my cats, Stitch, loves to play fight but the other, Callie, has a tendency to take it personally sometimes. When she does take it personally, it always ends with Callie chasing Stitch around the apartment crying at her and Stitch cowering in a clear, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean it, I'm so sorry, you're right, I'm a jerk, I'm so sorry, you win, pose. Callie's not the brightest bulb. It took Stitch nearly 2 years just to get her to play chase me, chase me without Callie freaking out at her. I figure it'll take Callie a bit longer to figure out that Stitch just wants to play fight, not actually beat her up.

I like how the dogs seem like "hell with that I am not getting involved in their foolishness".

    • D  •  5 months ago
I would have to say playing, The one on the floor with it's back down would never do this if there fighting. My cat plays the same game with me. I just have to be fast to remain teeth free. Cat's and all animals have there way of playing with each other, just as we do, The Kitty Plays Fetch Video. My Cat does the same thing, for past 8 years. She plays catch with me all the time. What the Cat is doing, is bring back a gift to the one that feeds them. My Cat never does this with my wife, just myself. But i'm the one that feeds her. Also you must watch there ear/and tail movements. Ear's down. look out, tail moving side to side, good

    • Dakota  •  5 months ago
Seriously? Quite possibly the stupidest article i've ever read in my life. 'If they are being quiet they are just playing' NO SHIT?!?!?!
    • Refriedbean  •  5 months ago
If there's no blood, they're playing. Ours love to stalk each other and pounce. They're great to watch. One of them jumps up on the back of the bathroom stool every morning when we get out of the shower to be toweled off. It saves her the trouble of licking her coat all day. I used to not like cats, but now I'm hooked. Sometimes literally.
