I have read in other on line articles that garlic is good for dogs since it is a natural repellent for fleas and such. Also in underdeveloped countries they feed cloves to dogs, in their food, so they can not fleas and even rabies. Of course this sounds far fetched but they do what they can for their dogs. I have heard testimonials from people who have done this and they say it does not harem the dog. The dogs is still alive and running around.

If garlic is so bad for dogs why is it in dog treats?
      • vickie 7 months ago
Probably to make it more appealing to the dog

I think it has to do with quantity. A garlic clove or bulb would be bad. A few sprinkles used in treats only enhances taste/smell.

PER - you are correct. A sprinkle (very (very) small sprinkle for cats) cannot hurt, and can help them to repel fleas and ticks.

who the hell gives dogs/cats gum?!
      • Ban Vick n Boycott Nike 7 months ago
Valerie (a few posts down the page) probably would.

My cat would get into my purse & chew on mint gum packs. I had to keep it out of his reach.
Of course he didn't chew like we do-he'd leave teeth marks. I was more worried about the foil wrap hurting him

My dog ate a whole bag of Halloween candy once! I was so scared I called the vet, cause she ate an entire Hershey bar that was in it, but nothing happened to her! whew

A friend's brother sent me a box of foil wrapped, liquor filled chocolates from Europe. I kept them on the shelf under the coffee table. I didn't notice they were missing until I saw the shiny stuff while cleaning up after my dog. He ate the entire box, foil and all! We did laugh but were freaked out at the same time. We called the vet, too. He said to "watch him closely". Nothing happened to him, though. He lived for years afterward doing things he loved to do like eating the cucumber skin from the step on garbage can in the kitchen, which he knew how to operate.

Yeah Bettie, this is frightening. We always hear how chocolate can kill a pet. glad he was okay., but watch out for that in the future.

chocolate in candy bars or cookies wont hurt a dog. its cocoa chocolate that will. there are chocolate treats for dogs that vets give out. everything is moderation.

For those of you who didn't know, many dogs are allergic to corn and corn based products, which is the main ingredient in most low grade dog foods. If your dog scratches a lot and doesn't have flees, check the ingredients in his food. Chances are there's corn in it. Changing his/her food to one without corn should do the trick. Your dog should stop scratching in a couple of days if not right away. Just a little FYI.
      • Poodle Mom 7 months ago
Besides that, corn has no nutritional value. It is just a filler. Grain-free is the best food to feed your pets.
      • itzpms 7 months ago
yes, i agree with poodle mom. when i must use canned food, i feed them Go! which is grain free.

My vet told us that. I was surprised. Rice is good though.

I cook for my dogs every week a rotation of ground turkey/chicken/beef/salmon, with veggies and either barley/brown rice/oats. They are very healthy, happy and active Jack Russells.

Commercial dog food is filled with preservatives, meat by products and corn. Alot of them have fillings that equate to road kill (i.e. the bones and teeth and other parts of animals). I wish people would research what is REALLY being put into this commercialized food before automatically assuming that is what dogs are supposed to eat. I did and will NEVER go back...

Dogs have been around centuries without commercial dog food, it is a modern invention and the companies have done a great job of brainwashing people into thinking it is the norm...

also small chicken bones are harmful
    • LittleMommie  •  7 months ago
Dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate. Check the ingredients on dog treats. Many of them have garlic. It is the excessive amounts that are dangerous.
    • Justin  •  7 months ago
@ Emily "Who gives a dog sugarless gum??" Have you ever even owned a dog? You don't have to give it to them, they have a tendency to just get into things they shouldn't.
    • Homer  •  7 months ago
My dog ate a piece of gum and his poop bounced.

Do not let your cat near a tea bag either. Our first cat got hold of one, opened it and ate some of the tea leaves. She went to warp 3 from the caffeine rush.Couldn't slow down, even banked turns off the walls. Vet couldn't do anything except let her run it off. Slept for two days after that. If she ate more it would have killed her.

Do NOT let your cat eat pot brownies!...trust me.

My Cat "Max" loves to eat those daddy long leg spiders that hand around corners in the house. He'll only stomp! on roaches for me to pick up and dispose of.He's a good roach catcher. Fred my other Cat, he'll bring us huge rats! to the door, he picks these things! up in the canal behind our house.
