Treating Your Pets to Treats: Dos and Dont's

Every dog deserves a bone once in a while, and every cat a bit of nip. After all, isn't giving your pet a treat one of the highlights of pet ownership - and one of the simple pleasures in life? But it's important to think twice before tossing Fido some scraps from the dinner table or just grabbing a bag of treats from the sale bin.

With the help of this infographic courtesy of eBay Classifieds, we take a look at what commonly found ingredients you should avoid, ranging from preservatives and artificial colors to fillers and byproducts. Then we share some simple ways to swap out potentially dangerous foods for naturally healthy ones. For example, did you ever consider making your pet's food? It's very healthy and fairly easy. Follow some of these tips, and we bet your pet will thank you...in more ways than one.

I guess feeding a scared dog a stupid news woman's face is on the NO list?

I lived up there in Ak. I loved Nome! When I left in 88 they were banning pitbulls. Are they still?

I eat cat treats every chance I get, and I love them.

unless your dog is allergic to corn, wheat or soy, which is not very common, those ingredients are fine for a dog. Also, by-products sound scary and gross but again, nothing wrong with these at all. Everyone is an expert with dog food now and falls for the hype of dog food companies who want to sell you their over priced product.
I had and have dogs all my life, 40 plus years and way back when, when dog chow was a staple, my dogs did very well on it. They were large breed dogs, several lives to 15, one to 16 1/2 and the others were 12-13 which were all at their average life expectancy.
Not one dog had any illness or nutritional issues and all had shiny coats, strong muscles, good teeth. My vets always commented on how well they looked.
If you want to spend the extra money for marketing hype and it makes you feel better then go right ahead,it is your money. The thousands, several thousand that I saved over the years in dog food is put into a fund for vet emergencies. I had to use it one time when my dog got injured and it was over $1600. I had MORE than enough in my fund to pay for that bill and still have over $1500 in the fund.
Dogs eat meat, by-products and vegetable/grain matter that would be in the stomachs of their prey. My shepherds look as good or better than any one of your dogs on the overpriced food and no one will ever guilt me into thinking I am not doing the best for them by falling for the super premium hype. They are on Diamond Dog food. One is on Naturals and the other on their regular green bag that has corn and by-products. The one on Naturals is on it because that is what his breeder fed and I just kept him on it. He looks no better than the one on their food with corn and by-products but even their naturals line is affordable.

Sounds like you got your dog from a bad breeder that fed him terrible food. I hope you do not support bad breeders in the future

Really, dogs are so very Third World that they will eat dead road kill if they can get away with it. My Irish Setters eat very well, and they are very well loved, but the cost of food is of great concern when you have two large breed dogs, and I too have never had a dog not live to its designated expiration date.

Rugged Rod, you just proved my point and you are another sucker falling to the marketing hype. It's your money...waste it but your arrogance in saying I support bad breeders is exactly what I am referring too. I have nothing more to say to you other than you are a fool.

Cellulose is, for many brands, the #1 ingredient in dog food. It's sawdust. Wood byproducts. FILLER. Wonder why yard cleanup is such a "big" task? This is why. It passes right through, provides no nutrition, and wastes money and your time cleaning it up. There are brands out there that don't have it, and if you spend the time calculating serving size vs cost, you'll be surprised how close they are to the cheaper dog food, not to mention the health benefit.

My dog loves sweet potatoe sticks with dried chicken around them or dried apples with the dried chicken. Once in awhile a Puparoni. She maintains a healthy weight and is active and happy.
