Owner Bev Nicholson was thrilled by the honor – and intimidated. "I couldn't speak when they announced Mugly's name," she said. "I didn't know which way to look." ("Not at the contestants" would be our suggestion. Heh.) "I was shaking as much as the dog.
But Mugly's an old hand at "under-attractive"-ness contests; he's already been named the ugliest dog in Britain in 2005.
The W.U.D. contest now gets international press attention, with beat reporters and camera crews descending on the Marin-Sonoma Fairgrounds at Petaluma, a town about 40 miles north of San Francisco. Organizers note that the judges look for "natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes."
