    8 Oil-Fried Foods for Hanukkah

    Hanukkah is a great excuse to let the oil flow and fry, fry away. Latkes and jelly donuts are the usual slick and crispy suspects, but they're not the only foods you can throw in the pan, which is why we've gathered eight great oil-fried recipes that are perfect for the upcoming holiday. Some are a little different, like crispy fried rings of squash, and some are, well, latkes -- but all are delicious.

      Smoky Fried Chickpeas
      Save and print the recipe at FOOD52.

      Serves 4

      2 large cans chickpeas
      1 cup olive oil
      1 tablespoon lemon zest, strips
      1 tablespoon smoked paprika
      1 sprig fresh thyme
      1 coarse salt to taste
      4 cloves garlic, sliced

      1. Drain chickpeas and set on paper towels over a colander to dry throughly.
      2. Heat oil in large pan (preferably cast iron) to 355 or until oil makes bubbles around 1 chickpea.

      3. Add lemon zest, thyme sprig, chickpeas in batches so pan doesn't crowd. Fry about 5 minutes until crunchy and golden.
      4. Remove from oil, drain well over colander, add garlic to oil and fry till golden.
      5. Toss everything with smoked paprika & salt, adding more if necessary. Serve warm. less
